All three parts were superb. I can only imagine how much work there's been put into this. Your videos have given me a greater sense of understanding and love and awe for a show I can't stop thinking about.
Thank you.
You're so kind. Thank you. It was a ton of work, but reading comments like these make it all worthwhile.
Absolutely agree with Celine. Thank you for making these videos. After finishing the show I was left with a lot to think about and figure out. You helped put many things into perspective and increased my love of this masterpiece called The Leftovers!
I loved that show too. Thank you!
I wanted to write something kind about how these analysis made me feel, but she said it better than I could ever do. Thank you Mr. Yardley.
When I heard the end credits (Pachelbels Canon) I felt sad but also relieved and satisfied.
The Leftovers truly is poetry but it's way too smart for me. It's the only thing in this world that I love but cannot explain why. This show has left me speechless when talking about. Masterpiece.
to smart for you? hahahaha!
@@wildeirishpoet When he says "too smart," I think he's referring to all the biblical undertones and small details that are very easy to overlook. I've watched this show in its entirety 5 times and I'm still discovering things I've missed. Like others have said The Leftovers is a Masterpiece. the Actors all masters at their craft. it's rare when we are graced with a show with as much depth, emotion, character progression and lastly attachment to those characters that send you into a spiraling mindfuck as you empathize with them.
@@wildeirishpoet risu inepto nulla res ineptior est
The Leftovers is, without question, one of the most overlooked and under appreciated shows ever. It's also, at the very worst, top 10 all time show.(I have it in top 5) Probably has the greatest score in TV history, too.
Great analysis!
The only thing that I felt was missing was Matt's and Laurie's character arcs. Specially because of how well they complement Kevin's.
In Matt's case, he is always believing all of his suffering is due to his own sacrifice to God, when Burton tells him he's been doing it all along for himself, he can finally let go of his faith, and become Nora's brother, and Mary's husband for his last years.
In Laurie's case, she has been hiding the pain she is in, not telling anyone about her own departure, and having breakdowns because she can't forgive herself for leaving her family, and even considers herself Judas, the betrayer. At the end of Certified she realizes how deeply she loves her family, and that it doesn't really matter if she kills herself or not. She is finally at peace with herself.
Both arcs are reflected in Kevin's. Matt's with Kevin's ego, and Laurie with Kevin's incapacity to forgive himself for when he wanted to leave his family. And at the end he finishes the other world, now he is a mortal with hearth issues, that can now accept how deeply important is Norah for him.
Hey Enrique, thank you for your thoughtful response. You're right. It's definitely unfortunate that I couldn't fit everything into this series of videos. The Leftovers has so many facets and fascinating characters that I think we'll be continuing to talk about it for years to come.
There are no words. Thank you for these videos. You have a gift for translating the rich mythological/psychological themes in the show. I love The Leftovers even more than I thought possible.
Awww. Thank you so much!
You deserve more subscribers man. Your content is incredible, it's just a shame more people aren't familiar with the Leftovers. Keep up the work though, you're very talented!
Thank you! I'm excited to keep making videos.
I have watched these videos multiple times. They are one of my favorite things on you tube. I hope you will make more one day!@@KirbyYardley
Right now I am grieving,as I just finished watching this last night. I always grieve for great shows that have ended. Feels like I needed more of this show, but I'm fine leaving it this way.
We need The Psychology Of Nora
Great analysis! I would compliment that by suggesting the total absence of Kevin's mother. We don't know anything about her and there's no mention of her throughout the entire series. Kevin clearly lacks a connection with his mother, therefore with his emotional side. Nora could be the "anima" archetype, Kevin's feminine shadow that shares with him the same problems. The end is telling because she asks him "do you belive me?" and he answers.." why wouldn't I believe? you are here!" and she answers: I'm here confirming that Kevin finally brought his shadow into his conscious, balancing his entire psyche.
Totally agree. Great addition! I had noticed that while writing these essays, but I never ended up mentioning it.
Thanks for doing this. I know I’m late to the party, but this show means more to me than I can put into words. Your analysis really helps parse out the depth. Fantastic.
Wow, Your explanations are as brilliant as the series. I felt inspired . Really great stuff.
This show changed my life. Thanks for making me appreciate it more
One of the things I never considered is that Nora's "portal" to the other side could've just been a psychedelic encounter, much like those water tanks Joe Rogan always talks about. Nora similarly was in a tank filling with water. Amongst many things, Nora is a pragmatist and should she ever physically or mentally enter a world where her kids would age without her, she would understand that too much time has passed to reconcile. She assumed the same with Kevin entering Australia, however Kevin was persistent and didnt give up. It's a story of love, but also one of acceptance.
Just like the show, your analysis series was severely underrated.
This series of videos is a masterpiece.
Excellent work Mr. Yardley, thank you. Your command of matching film analogs and religious/mythological insights ties much of this series together very nicely. Ultimately, much of this show is a story is about our reaction to unexplained loss and how to live our lives in its aftermath. The choice of its wonderful actors and the cathartic music of Max Richter make it one of the finest series ever telecast. I saw Richter in concert 2 years ago, where he played much of its music. He is a shy person and at the beginning of his group's performance, he said softly said that after all its composition over three years he "rather missed the Leftovers"......so do I.
Brother you just convinced me that Nora was not lying about going through to the other side... I thought this whole time she was and that Kevin’s validation of her story made her realize she can love him and that she’s accepted. This, however, connecting to Kevin’s unwillingness to tell her about Patti and everything else makes sense as to why he said “I believe you” “why wouldn’t I?”
Love this show
Love your show
Keep it up
Thanks! I'm happy you got something out of these videos!
I'm still pretty sure she's lying, but they accept each other warts and all in the end.
@@michealvega1373 yeah I still go back and forth on rewatches but I love it either way! Lol what damon Lindelof wanted people to get out of the ending to LOST I think he accomplishes here in spades
This three-part video series was just so good. So, so good.
Fantastic analysis of Kevin with all three videos! This show is one of the greatest shows that I have very seen, and I love learning its deeper meanings. You did a great job. Bravo!
Thank you!
Someone told me about this series recently. I was hooked from the start. Watched all 3 series in about a week. It's hard to describe this masterpiece, so I won't try, sublime might be my only stab at it. Try it if you haven't already.
your videos make me want to watch the series all over again. was great in the other videos to understand that magazine and the cave woman.
This hits so hard to home... It's basically a strangers narration of my life and my own faults. Was hard to hold back the tears
Thank you for your hard work,i now understand this masterpiece of a show.
And every time i want to rewatch it but dont have the time i just watch your videos with perfect analysis and i'm somehow happy.
I just hope that we can all reflect about our lifes and try to conquer it.
Watched this show back to back to back until it was over and I was happily exhausted! Great analysis, didn't have any idea about all the references! Well done sir...
Amazing analysis. it's given me a deeper appreciation for this show and I already loved it
I Literally cried at the end of this third sequence on Kevin and the Leftovers. I loved that show though I didn't understand thru mystery of it all. Thanks for casting light on the deeper meaning of this saga it's truly beautiful.
You did a great job on these. Thanks!
Amazing work.
The greatest show i have ever seen.
Your kevin trilogy is a beautiful and accurate commentey
Thank you!
Amazing! I’m ecstatic to see the Leftovers still getting some kind of recognition for its absolutely beautiful story and characters
Thank you! I totally agree. I think we'll be talking about this show decades from now.
1000000 likes for this video! Thank you sooo much on completing series about Kevin, the character that I struggled the most to understand, but within who I felt the most similarity to myself. Need to rewatch the series again very soon. Best of luck and keep making beautiful and thought provoking content!
Thank you so much. Thoughtful comments like this make this all worthwhile!
That was... like a rapture
great work !!!!
I am speechless because it is sooooo damn good.
your three part analysis is absolutely outstanding. thank you!
Fantastic series. Hope you release more analysis videos like this.
just binged all three, awesome analysis!!!! at no point did i think "hmm this is a reach" which is common with analysis videos. you explained everything logically and coherently and made me think of a lot of things i had not thought of before. now i am even more sure that this is the best show of all time.
YES! Glad to see you back. You're perfectly cut out for this.
Thank you so much. Truly, that means a lot.
What a show! What a journey of pain and suffering and understanding of self, great video, thank you! Wish everyone love and light inside and outside❤
I hate that I discovered the show just now, but I'm loving the essays. Thank you for this one.
YES, thank you so much for uploading this.
Thanks! I hope you enjoyed it!
I worked on seasons 1 & 3 from the HBO side - but didn't watch the series until after I left. I liked season 1, really liked season 2, & absolutely loved season 3. Other than Season 1 of "True Detective" (my all-time single-season) I think season 3 of "The Leftovers" is one of the best of all time. I remember when the International assassin tells the President to kill him " So he (real-world Kevin) never has to come back here" I just burst into tears - it was that powerful of a metaphor for how a part of your psyche can hinder you in your life - how you self-sabotage your relationships again & again - and if you keep it up you'll end up alone, like the "hero" of "Untitled Romance Novel", if you don't find a way to change the flawed parts of yourself...naturally the last episode was devastating to me - yet somehow hopeful & reassuring - it isn't too late, do the work & you may find happiness.
These were amazing. Thank you for all your work and efforts.
Absolutely loved this series, can't wait to see more from you in the future!!
Great series, thank you so much for this! now I'm going to binge The Leftovers all over again thanks to you! xD
Brilliant work (and very neat editing, loved the use of The Fountain's imagery throughout).
These videos are everything I've ever wanted out of an analysis video. Just incredible. Thank you.
You are amazing! I am in awe right now. I just finished all three parts in one sitting. This was an amazing video essay
this is the best character analysis i've seen of Kevin. AMAZING JOB. Will be following you now on!
Thanks for your work explaining the difficult continuum of this story
Wow. Bravo for this three part series. Just outstanding analysis.
Thank you so much for uploading these videos. I finished watching the show yesterday and I have been thinking about the ending all night long. Now, I have a better understanding of the show. Thanks again~
Your analysis is as superb as the foundation upon which it rests. 3 of the best Utube clips to be found.
Such amazing serie of videos. You help me to understand my own search for my true self, and know I know why I love this show that much. I'll watch the entire series again cause of your videos
Ps: There's some words written on the metro stations here in Lisbon. My favorite is "It's easy to reach the top, the hard is to reach yourself". Thanks
Thank you for making these! Very well done!
Amazing video essays. We can see all the work and analysis you've been through ! Congrats
Thank you!
Kirby!!!
Many Thanks to you for all the work that went into this wonderful analysis!… Obviously a labor of love for this powerful story! There is so much to digest and so many layers to explore... I’m in my second viewing of the entire show and there will be a third in time with much of your analysis in mind!… I also need to confess to ordering the May, 1972 National Geographic on EBay last night!🤗
Onward we go!!!

This makes more sense than any other Leftovers video I've seen.
👏
Amazing video series for an equally amazing show. Well done.
hey man, I really like your work here. I'm really eager about watching more content.
Thanks a lot for the Leftovers serie.
Thank you! I'm really excited about making more videos. :)
Thank you so much for these videos. Incredible.
Bro your analysis are amazing, keep up the great work!
what a great job, you've done. I'm absolutely amazed. Please do more this stuff about others, especcially Nora and Matt. Best regards and congratulations.
To me it seems as if they were all existing in a simulated universe, very similar to a combination of the Sims and Second Life. Their world is a diverse mixture of characters, some autonomous, some NPCs programs, and possibly participants from 'our reality' immersed in the simulation. You had cowboys hanging out with Buddhist monks, nuns mingling with pagan revelers, cops milling about the town dealing with circus clowns, party people and a variety of animals. Strange, random events occurring, changes in the environment and landscape. People who were supposedly dead or killed, RESPAWNING multiple times, some of which had different personalities and memories.
A glitch in the matrix or a moderator/programmer altering the parameters of the simulation at will perhaps? Think about the scene in the after life purgatory hotel, where Kevin had to CHOOSE a set of clothing in a closet that would determine what his role would be in THAT simulation, that is straight out of the gaming world, like GTA.
You trilogy is amazing and makes me fall in love deeper and deeper with the show ... best show and best analysis ever ,, all my love from cairo , egypt :*
this series was amazing. i only wish you had hours and hours more analysis for The Leftovers. Thank you for your work
Thank you!
Good stuff. My all time favorite TV series. These are great analysis.
Thank you for this. Watched all 3 parts
amazing work Kirby, cant wait for more =D
Thank you! I'm excited to keep making videos.
Thanks a lot for this amazing work!!!
Great work - I really enjoyed the analysis
Thank you Nick! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I was waiting so long for this, only to watch it five months later haha. I loved this. Now you can say you understand Damon Lindelof better.
amazing job, thank you man
Art, pure art of a video ❤
Holy shit that was good! Keep 'em coming, myman
im sorry for the late comment but
your analysis is really intresting man
its amazing how much depth went in this show
i know it doesnt sound like a special thing to say but this show makes you think, like really think.
how fragile life really is, and no one is amune to suffering..
crazy..
great work, thank you!
So it looks like you strongly believe Kevin Sr. was wrong about the flood. But like most of the characters' beliefs in this show, it's actually been left brilliantly ambiguous.
When Sr. visits Christopher Sunday to learn the last song, Sunday tells him that his song "means 'bring the rain'." This would mean that Kevin Sr. has already sung all the songs necessary to stop the rain. When Kevin visits Christopher Sunday in the other place, Sunday reiterates this and that his father didn't listen. So an argument can be made that Kevin Sr. really did stop the flood with his songs.
Finally a good explained video!
Amazing work,thanks👍👍
Been waiting for this...
I love these videos. I love this show!
This is beautiful
This is amazing 👏
i watched the show because so many people talked about how amazing it was. i have to say i was a bit disappointed with it. i recognized it as a hero's journey but after watching your analysis i realized i wasn't allowing myself the full depth of it. i thought it was about something/one else.
thank you for the mirror
Underrated channel
Hey Kirby, hope all is well. Would really love to see you back on youtube again, your work is really appreciated.
Great videos man. Im sad to see you havent made more videos
This is brilliant
Amazing 🎉that was really good and THANK YOU
Wow.... this is incredible
great commentary
i love your videos.
thank you.
Your analysis was amazing. I see you haven't uploaded anything in sometime, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on LOST... The psychology of John Locke maybe.
Great analysis. Can you do one from Nora's perspective please!
Thank you
I've watched a lot of these analysis of this series, and none of them point out the humorous side of it. To me, that's the "chef's kiss" that really makes this show so great...really serious subject matter with just the right amount of dark comedy thrown in.
It would be a drag without it.
DO THE PSYCHOLOGY OF NORA, PLEASE!! I fucking loved these videos, you’re analyses is amazing!!
These series of videos are amazing, thank you! Would you consider doing a analysis of the transformation path of Nora? Either that or a video on the significance of Holy Wayne , I would be really interested!
I'm don't think I have any more Leftovers videos in me. I'm really excited about moving in other directions. I really hope more people keep talking about the show though because it deserves the attention.
I understand. Either way I'm really happy you made these videos, they help bring attention to this massively underrated show, as you say it deserves the attention! Thanks!
Also, I meant to ask you before, I don't know if this is the most appropriate place for that or not. Where do you get these biblical images from? You've used quite a lot during this video series on Kevin. I've been searching for some image, or painting, that represents the heroe's journey, but I'm finding it quite hard.
This is seriously the best analysis on the Leftovers, and honestly might be one of the best show analyses on all of CZcams. Any chance you're working on a Watchmen video(s)? I feel like there's a lot of symbolism and mythology going on in it, but much like the Leftovers, I'm just a little too stupid to identify it all.
tnx! that was awesome!
First of all Kirby, you deserve all the compliments in this world! The analysis is spot on... I've just finished watching a few days ago and this has helped me immensely not only to recap through all 3 seasons, but to see if some of the things I caught have also been caught by others.
Second, I want to encourage you to do the same for other characters of the show, especially Nora.
Lastly, I wanted to ask you, did you read this article at religion-and-popular-culture(insert dot com here)/2017/06/04/the-leftovers-season-3-episode-8-recap-the-book-of-nora/ ?
Something tells me you too might have caught a reference to the Myth of Sisyphus on that last episode when Nora climbs up that steep hill.
Thanks once again, I'll be here to support!
The link you included was very interesting. Thanks for sharing. The Sysiphus connection had not occurred to me, but I think I arrived at the same symbolic/emotional conclusions. Camus has definitely had an influence on this series. They even gave him a nod in the very first episode when we see Tommy reading "The Stranger".
I'm not sure if I'll be doing any more videos on The Leftovers, at least not in the immediate future. I certainly would love to have included more about Nora in these videos, and I tried to, but there was so much that had to be left on the cutting room floor in order to keep these videos focused on Kevin.
Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment. It makes me really happy that people appreciate these videos so much.
Awesome analysis! I still dont know how he kept coming back from death!
That's not the point
