That's pretty cool, Ron! The two Santa Fe units look great together. The tether has the added benefit of making it look like they're MUed to eachother. Good stuff!
It would have been great if the fan hood was removable then you could place the charge port and switch under the hood. Hold the hood down with a tab and magnet like an RC plane.
Very impressive Ron. I really like that #675 chugging along. Just generally Ron, what do you see as the real advantages of operating your trains using battery power vs. regular electrical current? Is battery power better suited for outdoor railroads? I really like your railroad and what you have done. Bill B.
Yeah because the railroad is outside, I no longer need to assure clean track conditions. I ran track power for five years and just discovered the ease of running battery power. I still have the track power hooked up, so reverting back is a simple. Oh wait I need to clean the track still. Haha.
Super job...you make it very easy to follow along. Nice over and under shot of the two trains. Will be interested to see a video on turning the LIRR into a SP paint scheme...should work great! Thanks, Ron. T4
@@baldypalmsrailroad This will be a great way to break in as most of the model is already painted, so really you will be cutting teeth on the nose, mainly. Here is a link I think you will find helpful in making things easier, as I think it may directly apply to what you will be doing. It should work for changing the road name on the parts you are leaving painted gray: czcams.com/video/YjXzspgRkz0/video.html Hope that helps. Looking forward to seeing the results! T4
@@tinytowntrainstv thanks T4 for the great tip, I checked out the link, looks fairly easy. Yes the red hood is gonna be the challenge. Stay tuned to see how it turns out. 🚂👍
in the case of my 2005 Southern Pacific GP9 it's a bit different, unlike the Lionel Loco's my GP9 by kids Stuff only has one motor in the rear (yes it's battery powered by 4 C cell batteries), and two LED's hot glued onto plastic posts (blame them for cheaping out so much) my plan is to bring it into the modern age by not only converting it but also upgrading it as well by giving it a sound system and maybe adding in a forward motor so it can go in either forward or reverse.
You have a good project in the works it sounds. Look forward to seeing and hearing the results. Pending on what type of motor in the unit now, you may consider matching the motors of the same type. So they both have the same current draw and output. Ron//
@@baldypalmsrailroad well first things first I have to de solder the LED's and the motor from the battery terminal (4 C cells may have worked fine in 2005 but this is 2022 and that won't cut the mustard).
@@gamepad3173 Ok, before getting to deep into the weeds, 4 C batteries is only 6 volts. The motor may only be a 6 v motor. Upgrading to a 12 v motor may have an advantage when you have two motors.
@@baldypalmsrailroad yeah, as I may have to do that to not just my GP9 but also to that of the engine of the second King Sky express (same engine as the one I have).
@@baldypalmsrailroad I'm already looking into that, and managed to find such a 12 volt DC motor for $14.95 on eBay. I even managed to find a front truck from a Lionel GP7/9 with a dummy coupler.
🌴 Hi Ron - Very cool demonstration, having a second loco like the Santa Fe looks more prototypical. Like 👍 • Cheers from the Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
A nice, neat install. Years ago my son had a RC car.. after he ran it we would have to hook it up to a light bulb to drain the battery completely down before re charge or it would create a "memory" for the lasting life per charge. Does this application work the same way with the "memory life" or has that changed over the years with technology?
No memory, that was with Ni -Cad batteries. I’m using Lithium Ion and tried a few Li-Po batteries. I prefer the Li-On variants. These batteries you want not drain completely, they’re better if stay above 30% charge. They charge fairly fast and I get 3 to 4 hours of run time.
Excellent and very useful tutorial! Many thanks.
You’re very welcome… 🚂🙂
Nice and useful tutorial
Thanks for commenting. 👍🚂
Using a second, dummy engine as a battery car is a great idea!
Thanks Larry, I still have a few boxcars, and plan to make a few more other cars battery ready..🚂👍

Ah good observation Trav, I did not think of that effect. Thanks. 🚂👍
Nice thanks 👍
Welcome, thanks for watching 👍
Another awsome video!! 👌 perfect job bud
Thank you, finally get some train time again..

Yeah that would be nice. This loco is from a few years back, before TMCC circuitry. Just a one piece shell back then. Thanks for the comment. 🚂🙂
That's a great idea using an old engine to turn to a battery car. I have an old engine from the early 90s that I could do that too!
Awesome Joe, let us know how it turns out.. Ron//
