- After completing our crossing of the Cyclades we enter the Ionian, where life slows down. We enjoy some light wind sailing and find a beautiful anchorage in Ithaca called Skhoinos. We take in the beauty before searching for the best beaches on Ithaca. We stumble across a beautiful deserted beach, which has crystal clear water, it’s our type of beach. Unfortunately the beach bar is closed, but it allows for only the sound of the waves lapping the sand, perfection.
We continue our hike through the mountains and see more perfect coves around the island. We hike towards Vathy, the capital of Ithaca, which was destroyed by an Earthquake in 1953. It’s rebuilt houses are colorful, charming and still in the traditional style. We explore Ithaca for 1 week and love our time, it’s definitely worth visiting with many beautiful bays to anchor in.
The Ionian has so much to see and do, so we organised Kawai and set sail for Meganisi. With 7-10 knots of wind we sailed slowly up the coast, stopping in along the way for Jase to check out the second largest Sea cave in Greece ‘Papa Nicolis’. With rumors that it hid a Greek mini submarine during the Second World War he wanted to take a closer look.
Meganisi has many anchorages at the Northern end of the Island. We tied off to the shore in Abelaki bay as it was close to Vathy. We needed to buy provisions and Vathy had 3 small supermarkets that had enough fruit and vegetables to top up the fridge. We were also lucky that the owner of Palmos supermarket delivered to Kawai all our supplies and even allowed us to fill our water containers at his store. We still had time to explore the surrounding towns of Katomeri and Spartakhori where we met some of the friendliest and most welcoming people on our entire trip through Greece.

About us:
Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai.
We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Gibraltar, Canary Islands and then across the Atlantic Ocean.
Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :)

You guys are amazing just stumbled across this video by chance, if everyone cleared up like you do, the planet would be a better place, safe travels I’ll be following you!! - (not stalking!!)
Thanks so much Jenny! Yes it's something we really enjoy doing, glad you enjoyed the video :)
You have visited the Ionian at the best time of year - when there are no charter boats or flotillas out! Well done on your clean ups - paying it forward. Best wishes and safe travels.
Hi Cathy, thanks so much for watching! Yes we definitely enjoyed the quiet anchorages, I'm sure it would be a very different place in summer! We loved cleaning the beaches, we're going to try to do it regularly. Best wishes to you also :)
μπραβο...........
Bravo!
Thanks Mike
Well done guys ...cleaning up ... beautiful relaxing video !!
Hi Nona, thank you :) and glad you enjoyed our video!
We sail there for 5 weeks of the year beautiful love your videos 🍻⛵️
Hey Brian, lucky you, it was a pleasure to sail there! You would know the area very well! Happy to hear you enjoy our videos :)
Awesome video, and love your choice of music.
Thanks again for watching Phil, we appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed the vid and music choices :)
You have inspired me to do my part to cleanup next time I go the beach. Liked the drone footage too. Gives a very good bird eye view of the beauty and lay of the land.
Hello Huzefa, as always, thank you for watching our vids :) glad you enjoyed it! Oh yay, glad we have inspired you to do a clean up, hope you enjoy it!
You guys are Champs for picking up the rubbish. I'm surprised the Greeks don't seem to be that interested in keeping there own islands clean.
Hi Peter, I think the big problem is the wind. It gets really windy and we witnessed overfilled bins with rubbish just flying into the oceans which was hard to watch. It's sad to see such beautiful places filled with rubbish. Thanks for the kind words :)
Really enjoying your films, so chilled and laid back, keep on enjoying what you are doing ?
That is great to hear Pete, thank you very much for watching! We will keep enjoying it for sure :)
Beach clean up was excellent. well done.
Cheers guys! Hope the boat work is going well 😃👍🏼!
Love the settings. Untouched natural beauty and fascinated with your way of life.. seeing the clean up while on the beach made me realise your a lovely couple and worthy of subscribing :) well done
Hi Gary, thanks very much, appreciate the kind words. Also thanks for subscribing and following the journey. We always try to do our bit cleaning the beaches, thanks for watching :)
Another nice video. Getting better. No more winter woollies
Yay no more winter woollies haha :)! Thanks again for your feedback and watching, very happy to hear we are improving!
Beautiful record of our ancestral home, Ithaca. Respect for your efforts to keep the beaches clean. If everyone did a little cleaning up there would not be a problem. Great use of drone shots and personal narration. A distinct Australian accent detected.
Glad we did it some justice, it is beautiful!! Felt good to give it a clean up! Haha yeah hope you could understand us okay :) Thank you for watching.
Oooh I miss sailing in the Ionian! Crossing my fingers the whole corona-thing will fade by the summer so we can go back! Great video!
Yes me too!!!! Some of the best places to sail, can't wait to get back :). Hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!
Nice one guys, there's a lot to like about this movie. First of all, great work with the clean up. Every bit helps and the beach looked tops after you were done. Also really liked the drone pictures. Ok... keep up the good work and we will see ya on the next one Cheers!
Hey Pedro :) awesome, glad you liked it and as always thanks for watching. It was a great feeling cleaning up the beaches and we'll continue to do so, you're right every bit helps. It was a very photogenic place haha so drone pictures were easy! Chat soon :)
thank you, from napa, ca. usa
Hi Stan, thank you for watching :) hope all is well in Napa
well done guys
Thanks Bill and thanks for watching :)
So nice to see someone making the most of the nicer winter days, did you find a lot of places completely closed, or was there usually a Taverna or suchlike still open?
Hi Pete :) yes we did find a lot of places were closed, usually we could find one taverna or a small supermarket open but a couple of places the whole town was completely closed. We always had to make sure we were stocked up! Seems like April/May they start opening again. Thanks for watching :)
Way to go guys. Every little bit helps. Will join you soon. I am planning on picking up plastic too. I wonder, how the little villages deal with the plastic when cruisers drop it off in the public bins? How have you found the off season sailing? A lot of people say "you just don't do it".
Hi Gregory, thank you for watching and your comment :) Yes definitely every little bit does help. Hmm yes interesting question about the villages coping with the rubbish, they have large bins and recycling bins that were mostly empty (obviously off-season), not sure how it would be in summer. The off-season sailing has mostly been good, just have to be a lot more cautious with the weather when planning as strong winds and storms were very regular every few days. We would have preferred summer but just didn't happen that way but we enjoyed the quiet anchorages!
Just found your channel, nicely done. Much respect for picking up beach trash. BTW, may I ask what font is that you're using in the videos?
Thanks very much, appreciate it! No worries at all, it's called 'Daniel' I believe we got it from Dafont, hope that helps :)
@@SailingKawai Cool! When I first saw it I thought "that looks awfully familiar!"
Great Video! I love the Ionian islands. Have been to Lefkada, Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Ithaca for a daytrip. Whats the name/location of the first beach?:) looks a bit like Gidaki Beach. It‘s very nice to see you guys cleaning up these great places!
Thanks very much, appreciate the kind words, it was Maya Beach on Ithaca, beautiful little beach pity about the rubbish. No worries at all, we will continue to clean the beaches and do our bit! Thanks for watching :)
Lovin' your work & vids. Now that you've been using it a while, what's your take on the torqeedo?
Hi Dave thank you, happy you are enjoying our vids! We will try and do a video on it soon as we've had quite a few people asking. We are loving it now, early on we pushed it a bit too hard and it didn't seem to cope haha. We have learnt to go a little slower and the battery lasts way longer and takes a lot less to recharge. Love being able to recharge with the sun and not having to use/have petrol! Though maybe we can't go as far or as fast as a petrol outboard. Thanks for watching!
@@SailingKawai thanks for the reply. Makes sense really, slow down a little and go heaps further. Happens with all boats, even with fossil fueled engines.
Yes very true!
Kioni is the must visit on Ithaka :)
Hi Vasko, unfortunately we didn't make it there but we will be going back so will visit Kioni then! As always thanks again for watching :) Hope you are well.
Also ASSOS on Kefalonia - but choose nice weather as the harbour is very open to the north and not comfortable with swell
Sounds good, thanks for the tips!
Thank You for cleaning up the beaches.
Hey Daniel, no worries :) we enjoyed it! Thank you for watching.
clean up the beach to fight the hellish boredom.
Hahahaha never get bored out here, but really sad to see a beautiful beach full of rubbish, thanks for watching :)
thank you for cleaning up the environment
Hi Frank, no worries we enjoy it 🙂
Caught some local kids throwing and breaking up a polystyrene box on the beach last week on Corfu.....commend you to clean up the beaches, but there needs to be greater awareness in Greece to protect their own.
Thanks very much, yes it's disheartening when you see so much rubbish. I agree that education is the key, it's such a beautiful place, just hope they can sort it out soon. Thaks for the kind words :)
Great job cleaning up. Sometimes you might feel like you are the only people picking up rubbish but there s quite a movement of people doing the same. You might know of Take3fortheSea, ( www.take3.org ) Australian origins gaining a worldwide following with a simple concept. Love your videos.
Hi Roy, thanks again for watching and the feedback, much appreciated :) I haven't seen that one and will check it out, but yes we have seen others also doing it which makes it feel like hopefully we will get a little bit on top of it eventually!
Getting lost.. Are you not just take a other way
Thanks for watching Henrik, we were a little lost up in the mountains with no real path so we were glad to eventually get to Vathy :)
