17. The Bluest water EVER | Sailing to Paxos and Corfu | Sailing the Greek Islands

  • This week we continue our adventures in the Ionian Islands as we head for Paxos and Corfu. We leave Meganisi and need to navigate the Lefkas Canal, this is the second canal we have conquered in weeks (after the Corinth Canal) and we enjoy the challenge. The canal is well signed and the bridge opens on the hour and we are lucky to make it.
    The wind is light during our sail towards Paxos, 7 knots and we reach a constant 4 knots boat speed. We are fortunate we are in no rush and are happy to just be sailing. As we approach Paxos, a small bird joins the crew and is happy with the location. Paxos is beautiful, we see the bluest water we have ever seen and we spend days mesmerised and feel fortunate to have the bay to ourselves.
    We move further north to Corfu and enjoy the 'city' life. Corfu is a vibrant metropolitan city and it's really nice as a contrast to the Cyclades during winter. The weather continually changes during the week and we spend the days finding different peaceful anchorages. We spend time in Ipsos, Stefanos and Kassiopi on Corfu Island and they are all pleasant anchorages for Kawai. This is the last stop in Greece, as we next head to Croatia. Follow our Journey

    About us:
    Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai.
    We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Gibraltar, Canary Islands and then across the Atlantic Ocean.
    Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :)

    Excellent. Nostalgic for me. I lived in Ipsos in 1968 when I was ten. There was one Taverna, a few villas and a a few shacks. All the roads were dirt. An Albanian gentlemen taught me to free dive for shells in Caseopea. I used go out into Ipsos bay with an old fisherman called Spiros (of course). We would pull in boat loads of fish with just a hook and a bit of tin can as a lure. At night we could see the search lights from the Albanian patrol boats.
    I took my young family sailing around the area in a 26 footer about 15 years ago. We loved Paxos but for me there were too many cats. Loved the Lefkas canal. The bridge is a boat.That way they remain an island and get subsidies. You are lucky to be there off season. In summer it's absolutely chocker.

      @SailingKawai  Před 5 lety +2

      Hello there! Thanks so much for your comment, very interesting and I can imagine what it would have been like back then from your description, sounds like a great time. Catching loads of fish with a bit of tin can would have been a cool experience, difficult to do today I would think. Haha yes there are so many cats and they always jump out of the bins unexpectedly! We will be dropping back in during summer this year and we aren't looking forward to crowded anchorages, it's been so nice by ourselves. Thank you again for your comment and watching :)

    Artichokes!! Steam them until the leaves pull off very easy. Dip leaves in melted butter with lemon, or, salt and mayonnaise, or, oil/vinegar.
    Get them down to the “heart” and pull off the hair and eat the whole base.
    Thanks for the video. On my way soon.

    Thanks for the excellent video. I will pretty soon be owning a boat with a set target to sail the Greek islands starting from the Ionian once. Although I am living close by (Preveza City, opposite of Lefcas) it is astonishing to see places you have visited, from above. They look really different and most of the times much more attractive. Thanks once again. I am not going to tell you about the artichokes , I think you have already received a lot of recipes...I wish you save voiages voiages . If you should come to Preveza in 2020 and you would like us to meet just send a message.

    Hi Guys, I'm really loving your videos! I have two questions:
    1. Between the Cyclades and the Ionian Islands, which would you say provide the best overall water experience? I am planning a vacation in Greece and will be sailing in one if the two areas and ideally would like to spend most of my time snorkeling and swimming. Which region do you recommend?
    2. I was wondering if you guys have more info about internet connectivity while sailing? I have a web based job and require consistent high speed internet. Is that something you can get while sailing?
    Any advice would be great!

    • @SailingKawai
      @SailingKawai  Před 4 lety +3

      Hi Greg,
      Thanks for getting in touch! It's a tough question, there is so much to see in Greece and it depends on the time of year. Your safest bet for great conditions and beautiful water would be the Ionian. You will find it really busy, but the water is beautiful. Some of my favourite places are Ithica, Meganisi, Zakynthos, Paxos, Anti Paxos, Corfu all beautiful places.
      We purchased an internet device called a Tepi (contract), it was ok but I wouldn't call it consistent high speed. Most people purchase greek sim cards for internet and they seem to work well but that's the only advice I can give.
      Hope that helps and provides some information you can use. Thanks again for watching and if you have further questions please ask :)
