Gary, Hi. This is Peter Cincotta. I worked as a clown at Great Adventure at the time of the fire. However, on the day of the fire, I happened to be attending my sister's college graduation ceremony and was not in the park. I know that the clowns were often asked to if they wanted to work overtime at the castle. I did so a couple of times and might have said yes if I was there.

Hi Gary, as someone who lives in NJ and have been to Six Flags Great Adventure many times since I was 7 years old (not in the 80s though, since i was only born in 1988 and started going to the park with my family in 1995), one question I've been wanting to know about the Haunted Castle since I've started learning about it and have seen Peter James Smith's 5-part documentary about the 1984 Haunted Castle Fire is about the emergency exits inside, or at least one of them, is it true that one of these exits was chained shut because of the more rowdy parkgoers routinely opening the door so they can go outside and smoke pot? In Peter's documentary he pointed out a newspaper article about a mother who reported that she went inside the Haunted Castle with her children not long before the day of the fire and tried to open this particular emergency exit to get out early because her kids were getting too scared and wanted to leave but she couldn't open it because there was apparently a locked chain on it that kept the door from opening.
However I, myself had been questioning this because Peter himself had explained in the documentary that a metal chain would've definitely survived the fire since we've seen in video of the burnt wreckage that a metal fence inside did indeed survive intact, so this chain, if it did exist, should've been recovered from the wreckage and proved that the emergency exit door was indeed chained shut and, this part is saddening to think about but depending on where the bodies of the teens that suffocated and died inside were located, they might've been able to make it out had they managed to find the door and it could easily open for them had that chain not been there.

I worked as a scare performer at California’s Great America for several years. A lot of the one-day “Scare School” was taken up with emergency procedures, managing evacuations, responding to drunks and other hazards. The stop button turned off the sound effects and turned on the work lights. I could see how much was a response to the Haunted Castle fire. Shame it took kids dying to put the safety procedures in place.

This i.ytimg.com/vi/QndKjUVG5mU/mqdefault.jpg is one of the few interior pictures I have been able to find over the years. I'm unsure if it is from the actual Haunted Castle or it's twin "Gateway to Hell" over on the Jersey shore. This was the strobe hallway where the fire was started. And just to quash the common myth. No nobody was using lighters to see in this hallway. It was brightly lit with strobing lights. The white square at the end was the foam pad that was lit on fire.

@@StorybookAmusement I did wonder about that? It never looked quite right. I remember that hallway as having more black and white patterns to it. But I’m old so details like that get fuzzy. I just always assumed any interior pictures were actually from the near twin attraction on the boardwalk.
The one thing in the entire story that blows my mind is the local Fire department was in the park using the Haunted Castle as a training drill just a few weeks before the fire. And they apparently only used it for ladder rescue drills. Rescueing someone from the fake fiberglass tower. As someone who used to do fire training, I can’t believe they didn’t go inside. Because the place was setup like the worlds nastiest SCBA Search Drill. Put them in blackout masks and send them in. And if they had tried to search it as a drill, I would hope somebody might have realized just how dangerous it was? Everything about this fire, at every single level of the corporation, the local government, every institution failed and tried, often successfully, to cover up their failures. With kids dying as a result. There were no good actors. At trial Six Flags even bought off the then President of the NFPA, the people who largely at the time wrote the Fire Protection Standards upon which law’s and fire codes were based. He gave sworn testimony that having sprinklers in the Haunted Castle would not have saved any lives. It caused a huge scandal. He was fired for it. And the trust in the NFPA as one of the most trustworthy organizations in America was tarnished. (Which itself led to even more tragedy, as OSHA used the scandal to step in and start dictating Fire Fighter protective gear standards which had previously come from the NFPA. Under the NFPA rules and standards no US firefighters had died from fire or building collapse in over 20 years. Under OSHA almost 50 firefighter deaths the first year of the new standards.)

There are a lot of fairly common myths here. I recomend finding the videos or book titled "Gateway to Hell" by Peter James Smith for some of the more disturbing details about what really went on here. First up no guests did not use lighters to see in the strobe light hallway. It was brightly lit. The arson investigators were never allowed to question their chief and primary suspect, nor mention that he even existed. One of the three school groups in the park that day was one from a Special Diversionary Program for Troubled Youths that was run by the Catholic Archdioceses in conjunction with the local county. What we affectionately used to call a Juvenile delinquent Program. One of the kids known to be on that bus, and witnessed to have gone into the Haunted Mansion in the group before the two girls was known to the local county arson detectives. Because he had lit three schools on fire. This is the mysterious kid in the heavy metal t shirt. Everything about him was kept locked under seal because he was a juvenile who was already under county/state supervision. And the county went along with this fiction because they were technically the ones responsible for him being in the park, and for failing to supervise him, and failing to notice he had a lighter. He should never have been allowed on the trip or in the park. This got buried. The cops weren't allowed to talk to the kid. I attended a class with one of the Arson Investigators involved in the 90's. Probably the same guy that Peter Smith got his info from. He outright admitted they knew exactly what the deal was the moment they got the lists of the kids from the school trips. His name was such a glaring red flag to them. He liked to set walls and bulletin boards on fire. They were shut down by the DA because the kid was already under the direct control and responsibility of the DA's office. Oopsie!

Hi, thank for watching and leaving a comment. I have read his book and watched his documentary. Both of which are cited in the description as sources.
However, I used several sources for this video. Some sources include witnesses who have testified that lighters were being used to navigate though the dark. I compiled what I have found to be the most consistent information on the tragedy.
There seems to be a lot of disagreement on this topic. The information included has been cited as true across multiple sources, but I’m willing to recognize other theories about what occurred.
What all sources agree on is that the park was negligent when it came to safety. It’s a tragedy it caused so many young teens to lose their lives.

There were lots of reports of people using lighters and matches and smoking inside of the attraction.(cigarettes and marijuana). The kid that said he saw someone start the fire was reported because when he got back on the bus he was lighting his lighter in the back of the bus and he was seen coming out of the Haunted Castle right before the first reports of fire. The foam was engulfed immediately so he was likely the one who set the fire and got away with killing eight people.

There were multiple failures contributing to this. The Park and the township were both woefully inadequate regarding the safety of this structure. I sat through monthly department safety meetings where maintenance work orders were usually granted to maintain the income producing food stands & attractions. The Haunted Castle was almost always on the discussion list at these meetings. Under the category of "too little, too late " was this tragic irony...exactly a week prior to the fire, a response fire drill was conducted with Cassville & park Fire departments, specifically mapping out the most expedient way for the trucks to wind their way through the trees during a response. Just a long list of bad timing and bad decisions leading up to this tragedy, costing unnecessary loss of life. Most of the decision makers during this time have since joined the victims. RIP to them all.

@@StorybookAmusement people would use lighters in the darker areas. Which this hallway was not. I am a witness to this. I was last in that hallway 4 or 5 days before the fire. You would not use a lighter for light in that hallway. There was no point. It was a fast strobe light effect hallway. You felt like you were brightly lit but moving in stop motion. The hallway was brightly lit at about 20-25 fps. There was the blacked out twisty maze area where lighters were common. But no flammable’s on the walls. It also had a strong stench of weed. I was also in the park 3 days after the fire. There was a different really horrible odor hanging over the park. It would be a few years before I encountered that horrifying smell again as a firefighter. It was a very distinct smell that thankfully even firefighters do not encounter often. We went into the Haunted House (it was trailers put together) real live ppl jump out at you and touch you, we all walked in hurdles tightly close to each other anticipating the next scary moment.. People were getting slapped and hit, ppl grabbing on you for fear. It was so dark, it even looked like there wasn’t any floor, looked as if you could fall through the floor and at one point, looked like a fire was under the floor. While I was there, some kid lit up a lighter because everyone was in a panic but then we all saw the exit and we rushed to open the exit door to leave but got sunlight instead. There was no way to go out that door because although it led to outside, it was fenced in with other outside trailers Some of us kids wanted to leave immediately. With the door opened, it became so bright inside from the sun, so we propped it open but then as we advanced further it got darker.. Finally we was out and I said never again.. Just had a bad feeling. I’ll never forget when I heard the news later that same year, that 8 people were incinerated in a fire in that same Haunted House due to someone lighting a match. They couldn’t escape. I instantly had a flash back to the time I went.. I knew the scared feeling and wanting to be outta there. Does anybody remember going in there? I went in it in 1982, but there was very little in it at the time. Just darkness and a girl exited crying having hit her head on the ceiling. Hence the polyurethane which is the equivalent of solid gasoline. Same thing as the Station Fire in Warwick RI. Unfortunately these types of fires keep continuing as nightclubs and other venues keep ignoring fire regulations.

Hey my man, years ago I made the originally published documentary about the Haunted Castle fire, and I must say that you have a very good (from what I have gathered so far) piece about the Haunted Castle. I noticed -and please don't think I'm uptight about this kind of thing because it always happens and I am used to it- that you used some of my animation of the Haunted Castle interior, BUT is not a total rip off of what I did like others often post. You have quite a few original angles and it's very good. Like I said, people do use parts of stuff I published in the past and I used to get mad, but now it is kind of flattering. I don't know. I never made two cents off my work, so it's not costing me! As far as I see it, you dedicate it to the teenagers who died in the fire, and as long as it furthers their story, I'm happy to help. But I wish I had known you were making the film because I could have given you a better version of the animation to use, but it still looks great. I hope that I was inspirational in what I made all those years ago. I must have been in some ways, and I am honored. It was the very, very first thing I ever made, and I think it is kind of amateurish to look back on, but I did not expect it to be seen today like it is. I thought maybe if it were shown in my local library at the time, I was a success. If you ever want to chat about the fire, I can tell you so many things you would want to know and you'd love it. Message me anytime! Peter

Hi there. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. First off, thanks for all your research on this topic and the attention you've brought to fire safety as a result. I read your book and of course watched the documentary. Although I use many sources to create each video, your work was a tremendous help in putting this small project together, as cited on screen and in the description. I rely on multiple newspaper articles and books when possible.
Your documentary to me was well-done, especially considering it was produced independently and many years ago. I'm sure the conversations you've had since creating that and publishing the book have been beyond interesting, discovering new facts and hearing new stories of the incident.
Thank you for your offer and for reaching out. I appreciate you.

The worst part about this wasn't even the deaths, it was how this was entirely preventable, ESPECIALLY considering that 5 years earlier, across the pond, another fatal fire occurred at a theme park and also took multiple lives; those people would've lived if the ride had better fire protection.

Unfortunately, a lot of this information is inaccurate.
    1. Related documents confirm that a student, who had already been expelled from school for fire starting, most likely started the fire. The lights were not malfunctioning inside. He was the only one who was seen with a lighter. He was questioned but never named or charged due to inconclusive evidence.
    2. Changes to the layout was changed in recent months/years to protect ride operators who were notoriously attacked and tormented by guest. This made it even more difficult for patrons to escape, and also redirected staff members away from the area where the most of the deceased were eventually found. There is also evidence that an exit door was changed shut to prevent staff from leaving to smoke outside the attraction. This was never confirmed.
    3. The local fire department was unable reach the fire promptly due to heavy crowds. The on-site response team arrived in five minutes (essentially just park employees), but actual fire officials took much longer to arrive on scene.
    4. The deep corruption in the area was to blame for the lack of justice for these families.

I am so happy they didn't ask to use my exclusive video that I paid a fortune to make and HACKED IT. Make up your own dialouge next time you make a film, and maybe not copy other's words verbatim, like you did mine. I guess it must have took you a few hours to cough up this piece of trash, I had to get by researching three solid years. The use of the footage is disgraceful and if you used a few seconds I might not have cared, but it's ALL MY FOOTAGE ALMOST THE ENTIRE THING I could be sick.

      Hi Peter,
Thanks for commenting again. It seems your attitude has changed since your original comment a few months ago. I thought we were on good terms.
For this video, I used many different sources-newspaper articles, various online resources, your documentary, and your book-all of which are cited. While yes, your research was a tremendous help for this video, it was not the only resource used.
I used my own words for the entire script, as I've done with each video uploaded to the channel. Any direct quotes were attributed as such, but I don't believe I included any of your exact words in this video. If you have a direct example of me using your words verbatim, please enlighten me.
As a rule of thumb, my videos take about two to three hours per minute of the video. This upload is about 17 minutes, so it would've taken me around 40 hours to complete.
Your footage appears on screen for about five minutes of the video, which is a high estimate by me. The majority of the video includes original animation, some other footage, and many images that are not from your work.
This video is designed to tell the story of the events and honor the victims. These videos are made as a hobby.
What do you suggest the solution should be?
