As a college student, an older college student, sometimes I regret that I didn't do college the traditional route, attend college at 18, and graduate at 22. But I had no direction on what I wanted to do after high school. I went to community college and was coasting through, then I took a three-year hiatus. During that time, I did vocational learning and worked to build my skill set, then I felt ready to go to college. If I could go back in time, I would go to a vocational program first, then college.

As a College student, depending on what major your pursuing in, it may be easier than High School. I've gotten better grades in college than I could with High school. The one thing I regret being at my university was not applying for housing on time, as spaces fill up quickly, and if you apply late, you're left with poor options. Good thing, I've learned from my mistakes and applied on time to chose a dorm I wanted to stay in for next school year.

I recently graduated with a BS in mathematics back in December. I took eight years to complete a four year degree and finally graduated at almost 27 years old. I went part time and also took a gap year during COVID. However, I personally don't regret my decision to go part time and take longer to graduate as I feel like I would have simply failed as a full time student. Going part time and taking longer to graduate also gave me more time to grow and mature as a person before finishing my degree. I also went to community college first and transferred. To be honest, I don't really have a lot of regrets about college as of now. High school is a completely different story though. I have tons of regrets about my experience in high school, but I used those regrets from high school as a learning experience to do better in college and take things seriously.

I begged my kids to take a gap year before heading to college, but my husband was fiercely against it. One of my kids is now lost, burnt out, and really doesn't have a good degree to fall back on. I wish she had gone out and seen the real world before committing to a major.

that makes sense. i mean the problem for me is taking a gap before going to college would have meant staying at home all day doing nothing all day basically. i personally would have loved to have found a job back then and been making some money and seeing how the real world works and maybe even start saving up money.

Gap year for sure. I don't agree with people pretending college is more than it really is. It's only the movie-version, if you're rich. For the rest of us, it's a nightmare to get through while we work, and deal with real life in the midst of those years. If you're first gen, you will be parenting your parents while trying to learn and you won't have time or money to do "slave labor" aka internships. Internships are exploitation. 💁🏾‍♀️ I said what I said.
In the words of my European friends, "Uni in the US is funny. It's bizarre you guys go to high school twice and the 2nd time you pay for it."
I could not stress this enough: Do not spend your money on a Lib Arts degree unless you are solidly in the upper middle class or higher. It's a horrendous choice for those who are too poor to not go hungry from the debt-to-income ratio pending in years to come. STEM degrees offer soooo many more options (including opportunities to be creative) without the ROI being trash. And if you're middle to lower class, or lack support (emotional, financial, etc) DO NOT go to college unless you already have an idea of where you will work after that investment. It's worth it to go find work in your dream industry before you even begin the degree path.
Bachelor's degrees are not what people think they are. It's important to know what you're purchasing and how you will use the product. Unfortunately, schools are supported in their scams by the US govt. So beware of the amount of money and time you spend on it. If your desire is simply to learn, you don't need a degree for that. If you want to move up in corporate America...for that, you'll likely need a degree. If you want to travel? You don't need a bachelor's. Be clear and specific on your intent. College can feel like a scam if you don't know why you are there.

Could agree more! You, my friend, will be successful if you continue to apply yourself the way you've described here. Rooting for the likes of you to become the vast majority in this country

Yeah, my biggest dissapointment was how about 1.5 years of my 4 year degree are used to teach me stuff I already learned in HS or don't really need.

I regret not being more social able until closer to graduation and not finding more schools to go to for a better education. So, anyone reading this in college or headed to college PLEASE interact and be involved more within your school clubs, events and etc. (even if it feels uncomfortable). Also, if you don't feel like you are getting the education that you deserve TRANSFER to another school!

oddly enough i have no regrets on that one as i found most kids in college to be really stuck up and kind of snobish and i found this to be the case in everywhere i think it was an age thing/thing that carried over from high school/part of the time period. i am 35 for the record.

Nope. I took it very seriously while taking on a job and having fun and asking for help with studies.

I am in my mid 50s. I knew what I wanted to study and had a plan. I also wanted to have fun making memories too.. I rarely missed class. The problem was I did not take advantage of the other opportunities around me like getting to know professors, networking, checking out things outside the classroom but still on campus like the museum or talks.

At the end of the day, all these "regrets" are a very small part of the big picture and won't make or break your success.

Being too Shy to Network, and not studying a major that would get me a job easily! If you're paying over 40K a year out of pocket in a private Uni, unless you come from a wealthy family then maybe don't study the BS majors!
