"I don't want a group of people to dictate my success or failure." Spot on. A very wise decision which resulted in great character and much personal (and family) success. Too bad his dad, Billy, had that happen to him. What a gem of a person Billy Hamilton was during high school years.
Destroys motivational speech advice I had come across. Money 💰 and ego subjects us to competition for a prize we may not eve value. Life is much greater than Micharl Jordans or Steve Jobses
As much as I hate to admit it, he is right
a very articulate guy, he really hit the nail on the head when it comes to the spirit of competitions
Competition brings out the worst in people
I agree.
He is 100% right! Anyone watch the WSL? They are notorious for manipulating scores. Heck, Mick Fanning won 2 of his 3 world titles because of judges manipulating his scores. Kelly too. It's a proven fact sponsored surfers always get the so-called push, where judges give them an extra half point if needed to win their heat. The only way a non-sponsored surfer can beat a big named sponsored surfer is by not letting the scores stay close. If the heat is close the judges will give it to the big name surfer 99 times out of 100. Any sport where judging is involved will always be inaccurate.
Subjective judging is inherently flawed. So many rigged competitions that it’s been rendered unimportant.
I got 1st in a comp in the early 80s 8n the boys group. Surfed against some of the local rippers. Just names when I look at them now they turned out to be ,well traveled competitors that became fairly successful in their career. I was like from mill valley and nobody here of me so I was expecting even if I got the judges attention I would not get placed 1st. I'm just remenising the good ole days I QUESS and am looking back and not foreward. Laird is truley a master at his art and opened up garage doors that turned into a whole new world of surfing. I don't think that guy has ever been disrespected in his life. Not will ever be
Wise words Laird
The competition was fixed. Anyways, Laird is the man!
Very introspective guy. Thus very self aware.
I remember Laird Hamilton from the movie North Shore (he played the antagonist Lance Burkhart). In real life, Laird sounds more like the soul surfer character Chandler in the film. More of a purest than someone interested in trophies.
He played the villain surfer role! And did it well.
@@oswald1068 Yes, that he did, he did a great job! Everyone was amazing. I was just remarking that Laird Hamilton sounds in real life more like Chandler than the Lance Burkhart villain role he played in the film.
I agree with him 120%. I can relate totally, though I have no accomplishment anywhere near his.
Saw this interview, Sam, last night. Was great. Wanted to comment how interesting I find the interviews on Scripps channel. Thank You. I like the new word for me "undiscourageable."
damn Laird is a freakin brilliant BOSS
Lance Burkhart eventually became a soul surfer after all :D
Good self awareness, thoughtful viewpoint. 🤙🏼
It's so true I entered a surf competition and came last by a mile to be honest I hadn't surfed before and they prob wanted my entry fee I know I would have won but borrowed a board which cost me my crown now I can't even go into a board shop without getting depressed .Now I play chess but I can't win at this either.i think it might be me
Both Laird and Gabby are such humble inspiring people who certainly walk their talk , to be the best himan beings you can be in your own life and within ones own community and beyond if possible . That I find very motivational.and heaet warming .
To be inclusive and empowering by your own good actions ,values and standards .
That is a forfilling place to be .
🌻
Wise soul.
He doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that wants to be critiqued. He also doesn't seem like he'd take losng well.
He’s the best surfer ever. Hands down. Really no debate. And yes he would definitely not take it well if a group of judges decided he’d “lost” b/c he would know damn well that he had not actually lost. Subjective judging is a joke. All that gymnastics stuff is rigged as hell.
That was his point.
We all know he’s the king of the big wave, it’s a no contest!
Laird is such a fucking god....
Yo agnarr... take it easy please he's not a God quit making these people idols that you and others worship quit doing it please he's not a God so knock it off I'm so sick of that he is not a god
Lance Burkhart got smoked by Rick Cain that is why
he becomes Lance Burcart
Brilliant Insight. haha. North Shore was the best!
He is the Best. Hands down.
Makes sense
Whenever there's 'experts' involved, you can guarantee it's a sham.
This guy is Big Z
But nicer
He's right. I used to be interested in bodybuilding but then you see the judges are only hot for the guys ass so you can never possibly win. So then I checked out strongman you either pick the son of a b**** up or you don't no judging about it! Team sports suck, only the sports where you rely on yourself count.
Submise competition don't cultivate.
Ummm, more to the truth and heart of the matter is that FACT that Laird just DOES NOT like to lose! He likes to win. He HATES to lose. He is not the best of sports when he loses, by Gabby's admission and also by Laird's own dad's admission, as well.
Come on, people. Let's not believe "fake" news.
Kind of like our election
