This week we're going to look at Triads!
A triad is a three note chord. We're going to look at how they're constructed and how to apply them in our bass lines.

Thanks for your insight
For those of you learning music, just plant your minds with this man. I have been playing music for 50 years, and I can tell Mark is an outstanding teacher. No flash, no BS, no background noise, no jumping around with images, just flat out excellent teaching. This is the best way to learn. All the best Mark, I truly believe you are making a real positive difference for many learning bass, and music in general.
I cannot second this enough.
No flash, no BS, no background noise, no jumping around with images......precisely my criticism of the so called bass educators who flood youtube with the aforementioned garbage.....a real positive difference for many learning bass, and music in general.....you hit the nail right on the head with that quote. I couldnt agree with you more
I just picked up my first bass, I fell in love with an Ibanez 6 string bass, at first sight, got a really good deal on it and I was looking for some where to start..I found [ talking bass] and was so impressed with the teaching that I picked up a 4 string bass to learn also..he's great and I feel confident that I can learn from this channel..I'm over 60 and learning. 😊
This video just changed my life. After 20 years of playing guitar and 2 playing bass, I just leveled up on a big way.
" . . . for the more impatient . . ." That's me. I just recently picked up bass at age 55. There's a lot of lessons online, but yours are the most straight-forward and accessible, and make practice fun. Thank you.
Dude this video unlocked my brain and actually made a bunch of music theory I already knew make SO MUCH SENSE
I love that bass!
Loverboy’s classic “turn me loose” is the best example of the augmented chord from rock (it’s the three note run that happens in the middle of the song) glad to see you covered the augmented triad.
Mark, I am an ole guy that has been off and on play bass over my long journey. Your simple but overall break down of music theory and playing, I only wish I could have been exposed to your style of teaching. I know I would have stayed wanting to play and did so. It is so clear that your knowledge of music is very highly trained, but your ability to teach the lessons is like simply having a conversation that is easy to engage in and talk about. My hat is off to you, please continue as I know that you will help guide many more bassists that you will ever imagine.
When I can finally afford a bass, all these hours of lessons I've watched will come in handy. Thanks!
A great inexpensive bass is a Fender Squier Jaguar Bass. Can't go wrong. You will have it for the rest for your life. About $180 US dollars.
This is excellent! I now will be able to understand 40% more of what Rick Beato says!
Boy did I need this! I seem to learn better through gaining an understanding as oppose to memorisation. It feels like it takes forever, but hopefully it'll pay off in the end. Thank you, great job explaining!
This has helped a lot , clear and to the point with no messing around , excellent teaching Mark , thanks.
This lesson is a must for beginners to understand how chords tones work in forming a bassline, thanks again Mark.
As always Mark, this was an amazing lesson! Thanks for your outstanding service to the bass community!
we are very lucky in this day and age with youtube and people such as you giving free lessons. 30 years ago when i first learned guitar i struggled through weekly lessons with a teacher who i had to travel across town to meet. I had no idea what he was trying to teach me most of the time (not that he wasn't a good teacher; I struggled with, and still do struggle with the theory).
I have spent a lifetime as a self taught guitarist. Now I am playing with the bass and find these youtube videos extremely helpful.
Cheers from Adelaide, South Australia.
Gudday mate!
Outstanding Mark, I have been playing bass for years and had many teaches, This clear explanation of Aug and Dim triads is one of the best !
Most valuable lessons on the net!
Exaclty what I've been looking for. A rare gem.
Thankyou for such a practical, straightforward explanation of the foundations and how they fit into actual playing.
I've started taking in-person bass lessons, but Mark's lessons here are a great supplement to what I learn face-to-face and were also some of the very first when I started self-teaching bass to myself about a month ago. Definitely loving it! Keep it up, Mark :)
Very detailed and I can easily follow it. You're an amazing teacher, Mark!
Thanks mark, great lesson as always!!
That was so clearly explained. Thank you.
Great tut this helped a lot!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge🙏🏾
Yeah! Great as Always 👍🏼
Thanks Mark, Greetings From Italy
13:29 how perfect of an ear training bit. Wish I had this a decade ago to listen to daily
Excellent Lesson, Excellent teacher. Thanks, Sensei!
this was a great lesson. Helped me understand a lot of stuff that ive read but didnt fully grasp
This is GREAT!
I learned triads indexing off the root. Looking at it this way as stacking thirds is an eye-opener. Thanks for sharing.
Great lesson, just what I needed. I bought your Ebook 4 days ago and this was very helpful
Thank you i am learning a lot
I’ve been a classical music hobbyist for over a decade and I really did have an aha moment when you predicted. Thank you!
Exelent as always!
You're a great instructor/teacher, Mark. Thanks much

mind blowing, indeed.
This may be helpful for writing, thanks dude!
So helpful riffs thank you so much sir
Pukka lesson Mark, I like the nod to Cliff Burton as he was an incredible attitude on the bass guitar that is sadly lost.
thank you sir!
The best I've ever heard this explained!!!
Interesting video, thanks.
Top stuf manzo.Easy to digest !!
Thank you! Greets from Germany
That’s a beautiful bass!!
dude you are awesome
loovely! your tips and lessons are a big help.
cant believe anyone would give you a thumbs down.
and the light went on again :) thanks..
I've been thinking in terms of 1 - 3 - 5 and then wheather to use the Major or minor of each, this system of stacking just 3rds leads to the correct 5th, (Maj, or minor) without having to think of which 5th to shoot for. One less thing for my old brain to process. Another new thing to get sorted, but I can see the benefits of working chord tones this way. I'll bet that following this system one more step will lead to the proper 7th too.
Esse cara é de longe o melhor professor de baixo no CZcams em língua inglesa.
Iron focus and clarity here...no fluff, no mumbling and fumbling. Very distinct bass tone as always.
I love that blue/violet color your bass is! Gotta have it on a j-bass! :) Thanks for the lesson
Just had my light bulb moment! Thx Mark!
The 3rd pattern is awesome. Then there th. I love the 10th chord sound.
Good job Mark, i have been playing Bass for 40 years and i am still learning. May i know what is the Bass that you are playing in the video thank you
Light bulb , Thanks Mark!!!
Mark smith has a course on aural skills. It is the best course so far I have done. It helps you figure out songs on your own.
At 12:31 i‘ve thought you were playing Madness “One step Beyond” cover expecially when you landed to G triad arpeggio.😂
Nothing great one! You’re really building up my theory!
Very cool thank you..excellent teacher
Who is the maker of your pickups on your bass? Sounds great and love the lights!! Looking to get new pickups!!
Martin Sims. Sims Guitar Works. He also built the bass. Enfield Lionheart.
At around the 14:08 mark I believe you mean to say augmented / sharp fifth, not fourth. Correct? Great video!
What is the name of that bass? Looks nice
In a nutshell: music theory in context, that's why it works. Thank you, very much.
Can someone explain how do you use sus chords in bass lines?
I have been stuck with them for some time now
14:02 I think Mark meant to say "sharpened 5th", not 4th. Just clarifying in case anyone got confused because there was no 4th in the chord he played.
Flat5
Hi, could I get the brand of this tremendous bass? Thanks!
Enfield Lionheart
Do a tutorial on your intro riff😂
Already have. Just search Talkingbass Intro Lick
Thank you man you are my hero❤️
My brain hurts
With a bass like that I can surely get a nice gurl....
