People seem to forget that this is a REAL problem in Japan. Not the Zombies lol. But the unpaid overtime and suicide inducing work culture. I'm sure this story came from a place of someone who was caught in this system at one point.

Sadly, Japan has a very strict culture and expectations for graduating students. I remember watching a show that showcases the strict expectation for graduating students to land a job as salarymen. They even have mock interviews in schools and strict etiquette to follow. Neets or short for "Not in Education, Employment, or Training" are heavily look down upon. Same goes for working people still living in their parent's household. They won't tell you upright but you feel their judging gazes and sometimes through the way they ask questions.
This culture is easily exploitable by Black Corporate Businesses and is one of the major reasons for the high suicide rate among males in Japan. Being fired or resigning from a company affects your records heavily and aside from social judgement, this will make it harder for you to land a job in a new company. That is how hard Japan's corporate is. One of, you could say, dark sides of Japan. There had also been cases of immigrant worker abuse in Japan, especially those coming from SEA countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines.
All that…and American workers actually work almost 150 hours more. Our country is way better at hiding and ignoring the toxic environments we put our workers through. Japan acknowledges it while US calls it freedom 😑
In Japan, though there were rules or company policy about overtime and vacation time, due to peer pressure, many people didn’t take vacation or “voluntarily” worked overtime. You notice that no one told our protagonist to go back to work after their welcome party. He just “read the air” and followed suit. This was quite prevalent among many Japanese company practices, and a few years ago, there was a highly publicized suicide of a new employee at a famous advertising agency. This prompted lawmakers to pass new regulations that made sure that companies enforced strict overtime policies and made sure people took paid days off. So things are a lot better now, but prior to 4 or 5 years ago, it was pretty bad.

The pre apocalypse 1st half of the episode really hit close to home. It was basically how I lived my life when I was working as 3D Animator for Xebec Animation in Tokyo during the mid 2000s.
As a general rule - no one should arrive later than the boss (9 am) and no one goes home before the boss (2 am). So my typical work week was Monday - Saturday (yes sat) 9 am - 2 am. I would sleep in either McDonald's or Wendy's alongside other salarymen, students waiting for Kokubunji station to open at 5 am - go home, take a shower, a power nap and take the train back before 9 am. Rinse and repeat.
I was so fkn high on vending machine coffee and sneakers bars just to help me get thru a day.
EDIT: on paper i should only work from 9 - 6 M - F. and there is NO OT pay (back when i worked there anyway). BUT it's generally an unspoken rule - that if you dont do like the boss - all your co workers will see you as somewhat of a traitor. You DONT want to be that guy, especially not there. I got an earful when I stayed home because I was sick - and simply because my Japanese was bad and the office didn't really get the message when I called in sick. - In a nutshell thats how a Buraku Kaisha (Black Company) works. I heard from friends, that it's not as bad now, but the practice is still very much alive.

Great reaction and I totally agree the direction and editing was out of control this episode. Seeing the colours slowly get more and more desaturated until the ultimate explosion of colour and the frame opening to full screen. Just awesome stuff
i thought they did it on purpose for censorship cause it got aired on TV. Maybe they removing the colored blood for the Blu-Ray version in the future
The moment akira breaks out of his "cage" and the screen goes full IS SO DANG GOOD!! The animation for this show is amazing and I only hope it keeps the quality. I also just realized this anime is made by a new anime studio!

Man, the way they portrayed his work-life hit WAY too close to home. I lived like that for 3 years before I tapped out. 12-hour shifts on weekdays and 36 hours on weekends. I absolutely relate to bruh's first reaction being relief that he doesn't have to work anymore.
That supervisor yelling at his employees "why you asking me, you should know this" triggered me, hated that crap at work.

They are particularly common in Asian countries with complex metro light rail systems (e.g. Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea). In some areas, there isn’t simply a waist high barrier but a full glass enclosure over the tracks, with doors that open only when the train arrives.
I never saw any of these protective features in North American cities in which I lived or visited: New York’s subways don’t have them (which led to a case years ago when a man had a seizure and fell onto the tracks). Montreal, which has an extensive underground city and train system doesn’t either. Boston doesn’t and neither does Minneapolis. You just stand behind a yellow line and everyone simply trusts that you’re not going to hurl yourself or accidentally fall into the path of an incoming train.

It takes several months for a single episode to be done starting from storyboards, but episodes are made in parallel, that's why one-cour series could be produced in 12-18 months. And the production of some episode may fall behind the schedule, and that's why delays or recap episodes happen sometimes, but it doesn't mean that they haven't even started working on a certain episode, it just means that that specific episode is not ready to be broadcasted yet, but later episodes may be perfectly fine

Being a whistleblower in a japanese company, even it's a hellish black company like this gets you considered as a traitor. They force this horrible idea of "loyalty" into the people early on and now these workers are trapped in this mentality.
This episode was a master class in the use of color.
This anime shows the real Asian corporate culture. It is normal for Japan to work more than 12 hours a day, not only for Japanese companies, but also for South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore are all this type of life.

In Mexico, there is a saying told by the companies: "ponerse la camiseta" which would translate to "put on the company´s shirt." as in you have to give 110% for the company. Regulations? Laws? You can't be accused of breaking anything like that if it's the employee the one who choose to work overtime on their own free will.
i actually a manga reader of this series so happy it was animated but its beyond what i expected seriously its wow the animation add a artistic feel that i didnt expect it add flavor to the story if ya can why not try the manga its good X3 crazy and fun and deep i wonder how they will animate it its still on going
Stories like Office Space and Shaun of the Dead walked so this beauty could run. This is the best use of color in anime I've seen in a while! Optimistic zombie apocalypse stories are rare, and I'm excited to see where this goes!
Toxic, abusive jobs like this are definitely a thing all over the world (thank you, capitalism, we hate it), but Japan gave them a nickname: "Black Kigyou", corps/companies/businesses that flout labor laws and burn out or even kill their workers. Cells At Work: BLACK was about them too.
This episode did a good job illustrating why he didn't leave -- "This all-nighter might be a fluke", "I gotta be tougher", "I don't have time to search for a new job", "If I quit, my colleagues will have to pick up the slack," "It's not as bad as some jobs I've heard about" -- and really making you hope the fucking zombie apocalypse will save this poor kid!
I felt pretty bad for Ohtani. We didn't get to see things from her perspective but given her situation and the type of company they were working for, she was probably having just as bad (if not worse in a different way) time as Tendo. I hoped she would still be alive so she could get a chance to help kill that boss-zombie :'( In a way it's good that Tendo has zero ties left to his old shitty life, but yeah... I still felt sad that Ohtani never got that same chance to break free.
I got the same vibe, that her "mistress" status was more about surviving the job than wanting to be with her boss. I don't know if she'd have been happier stuck with the nice guy with the blatant crush on her (he doesn't know her any better than we do), but it sucks that she didn't get a choice. We hardly knew ye, Ohtori.
not saying she deserved death but thank god she aint a main/side character. She exploited her work place and also woud have been disgusting if she became his girl. Dont get why he fell for her anyway she was just nice to him nothing more

The number of people who think she was willingly sleeping with her boss is mind-blowing, fill in the gaps from what we're shown, guys, she clearly tells him to stop. She's definitely being coerced into it. Unfortunately, in these situations reporting, it doesn't help much, even more so in Japan.
zombies aren’t really a popular monster in Japan specially bc they see the overall concept of messing with someone’s dead body as a super taboo not to mention the vast majority of corpses are cremated bc of the lack of space in Japan, still great to see this monster be utilized every so often in Japanese media

We call those unpaid overtime as OTY or Oh Thank you because it just get a thanks but not paid. I'm quiet familiar with it but not to the extremes like in this anime.
If we're talking about zombie-type anime, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is a pretty good one. Very AoT-like. But I love that this feels like anime Zombieland!

I think some gaming companies like Blizzard etc. taken to court for something like this. Crush days or weeks are somewhat different. Also if you feel depressed Uchi no Kaisha no Chiisai Senpai no Hanashi is the complete opposite, check that out for good vibes LOL

I think the reason for both the live action and anime is because of the creator, he’s made Alice in borderland which has been pretty good for Netflix as a live action.

No, in Asia, there are no work regulations. If there are, it's definitely not enforced. You could ask any Asian people (who are not bosses or anyone within management positions) and they'll tell you that yes, living in your workplace is pretty normal.
Yeah the second I saw a girl I liked getting clapped by the boss to get a promotion or out of work that's the second anything positive I even remotely felt about her would be gone. Sadly that's super, SUPER common in the military and corporate world.
That's the thing with regulations most of the time, they're there on paper but many companies just ignore them. I've personally have done the whole not go home for a couple days thing myself.

You get effectively screwed and its worse when you add Japan's work culture. Two days? some people do full weeks in the office and others who are more than well-off live in their car because of their works hours and not because they can't afford rent somewhere. The whole paid bath house thing doesn't make it better.
Fuck. I hope things are better for you now. Nobody should have to be in that kind of situation.

As for the show, the paint colors are all "chosen" censor by the author for blood, so when you see the boss running in blue paint, it's actually blood, not water ^^

Reason for that is most are scared to lose their job and others are a** kissers so they don’t get affected and then there are the ones who just don’t care about what’s happening around them.

Yeah she was sleeping with the boss, but she's also just human resources. She doesn't have to do the same work as everyone else, all her work just involves the employees paychecks and hours. She gets to go home on time bc she doesn't have "projects" lol. But yeah, also banging the boss.

Well this is true. Mostly in Japan. This is why you'll find the craziest thing's in japan. Japan isn't one of the fastest developing countries for no reason. The workers have to stay in the office untill DAYS OR WEEKS. This is why, japan has so many weird activities. It's mostly for THOSE OFFICE WORKERS TO ENJOY. These conditions are absolutely true. You'll feel pity for them if you get to see what I saw in that industry. Specially in game designing. Even animators have to work overtime to animate what we're seeing right now.

when i went in for an interview for a job, which turned out to be an MLM/pyramid-scheme, they made everything super clean, as they knew i was a guy, they had all the prettiest women in the office, and during the interview they made the 'job' sound like it's the easiest, best thing in the world, which pays handsomely (and makes you feel stupid for not taking it)... that scene where Akira starts working gives me flashbacks of that, although luckily i didn't take that job, cuz a friend sent me multiple articles about how sketchy that company was :'D aaand later multiple acquantances who tried working there told me that those articles were all true :D

People talking about Japan man I did this shit in my normal 9-5 retail job . I got promoted to manager, thougjt I was hot shit and closed one night that week. Someone didn’t come in for the overnight shift, and we can’t leave without an overnight so I called my boss and she told me to stay. My ass was at work from 12pm to 8 am round the clock till the next morning. Slept . Came back to work for another 12 to 11 shift. They can’t make you but they sure make it feel like if you don’t your fucking the team and your position.
