  • In this episode of Hermitcraft, I dive right into making my very own Chorus plant farm, but not without some extra visits from the Po Po for the Permit office and GeminiTay. Some good fun moments are had, and we grab an unsuspecting RenDog for our base tour who delivers some good, hard feedback.

@@PearlescentMoon It felt to me like Bdubs' latest "Revolutionizing Building?" episode was him trying to push the boundaries to see if he could get someone to say something critical and he's just so damn good and out there that ppl were like "nope this tracks and i love it".
It's basically right there in the title like he doesn't know if it's too far as far as abstract perception goes or if it works and ppl just get it right off the rip.
I know ppl talk him up a lot but it's hard to articulate why he's so good, afaic it's cuz it's such a weird phenomenon where the line blurs between objective skill and subjective opinion and Bdubs is somehow always right on top of it (if not juuust poking his toe over the line lol)
Seems like almost anybody else could try and do that same thing and it'd turn out horrible but Bdubs has so many tiny attention to detail elements that tie everything together into one cohesive unit that the whole just becomes greater than the sum of it's parts if that makes sense...
Like when you first look at that log cabin it almost looks like an abomination...the stark contrast and weird use of various blocks...but then the mind quickly adapts and you're like "oh, i get it. That's the chinking, and this represents that weird rustic aesthetic like the way some backwoods carpenter would need to shape just some of the logs or only the flat bottom sections removing the bark with a draw knife creating the contrast between the bark and the sapwood!"...and all of a sudden it just clicks and works.
Most ppl wouldn't even try to represent that stuff or think of it with that level of focus on the minutia but Bdubs just has that artist brain that goes "well this is what i wanna do and this is all i have to work with so the question now is what can i get away with when it comes to the general audience and more importantly how far can i push it before the subjective perception/suspension of disbelief collapses entirely?"
Like that weird little waterfall that he did so it looks just like a painting out of the corner of your eye when you are entering his little forest there. Who tf does that?! Who even thinks like that or would try to represent that in a weird pixelated block game where at first glance any sane person would assume it impossible (not a dig as there is as fine a line between genius and insanity as there is objective fact and subjective opinion)
Anyway didn't mean to go on a long rant S'ing Bdubs' figurative D so to speak but i thought it relevant to the conversation at hand. If everyone is so focused on being nice to the point that it makes them lie it's not really nice is it? That's how echo chambers are formed and why we get rich and famous elites that are so up their own A's they don't know scat from spackle so to speak (sorry Pearl, trying to keep it as PG as i can but it's not my first instinct let alone my forte lol)
When i was in the army we had a saying: "Embrace the suck". Nothing is ever perfect or ideal. One needs to have the mental fortitude to embrace hardship, perceived negativity or unpleasant realities so they can adapt and overcome. That's what makes you better and stronger than you were prior. Ppl need self awareness and personal responsibility to grow and change for the better. No one wants to talk about vulnerability, no one wants to do vulnerability; but the truth is we NEED exactly that and if ppl don't like it well, the world just doesn't care...and that's perfectly okay and how it should be.
Pressure creates diamonds. "Hard times create strong men (and women). Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men and weak men create hard times." --G. Michael Hopf
We as a society are currently at the end/beginning of that quote. It can only get better from here.

Learning how to humbly accept and give constructive criticism devoid of ego and bias is a difficult skill to master. The Hermits are very mature and good natured, able to give and receive feedback with grace. They’re such good role models in the MC space and I love their increased involvement in MCC this season. So looking forward to seeing them participate.

The Hermit-tours arr a great concept. I always like when you guys critique each others builds, face to face,. The normal interaction is usually some hermit spotting a new build, shouting "Oops, spoilers!" and run the other way. If we're lucky, maybe a flyby "That's cool!". I really would like to have guided tours like that to be a server-wide regular thing.

    • @LDaemontus
      @LDaemontus Před 21 hodinou

I understand if it’s something they do for streams where it’s informal, and also may spoil an unreleased video, but I think if you’re a content creator whose doing their primary work on a server, with others, the whole point is collaboration and growth. It’s weird to have edits, like spoilers, that are contrary to the nature of the content.
If anything, pointing it out makes it more obvious and also makes the videos more artificial, rather than organic, as it reminds the viewer that what they see is simply edited footage and not organic, like streams are.
And like you said, it discourages Hermits from adventuring because there is now an unspoken “rule” of sorts to be mindful about accidentally daring to view another Hermit’s creation, on a Hermit server.
It creates the accidental trend that makes Empires uninteresting, too, which is my biggest criticism of other SMPs is that most creators stay isolated and keep to their own builds, with very little in the way of interaction, all for the sake of preserving content, which is stupid because, as the life series proved, people LOVE drama and stories. People love collabs, wacky projects, bickering, competition and faction wars. Let the wild stuff happen!
The cross over between Empires & Hermitcraft was the first time I saw the most activity between players’ and every other video I tried to watch afterwards was just creators going back to their independent projects, in far away parts of the map.
Modded SMPs also do this and it’s INFURIATING. Its a server of people who are meant to be friends, try and least act like that counts for something.
I just want content that organic, and genuine, and nostalgic to the origins of Minecraft, with MC Olympics and MC challenges between contestants.
That’s why I think Hermitcraft is the best SMP, as it captures the spirit of Minecraft.

A redstone torch on the top of your Wind Turbine Kites might add an extra detail as a night warning light. If you fully stock your dispensers with arrows, you'll have 576 uses of your farm before you need to restock, so I probably wouldn't worry too much about automating it. Love the idea of using dispensers to shoot arrows to harvest Purpur flowers, I'm gonna try something in my world along that idea! I've got at least 20 chests of arrows and that seems like a great use.

i utterly adore how even your farms are in the theme of solarpunk with reusable arrows. after learning about your theme i was mulling over how one Would do solarpunk in minecraft and whether it would be more of an aesthetic thing in which you build things that look solarpunk (understandable, it is buildy minecraft after all) or a following of the ideals of solarpunk *in* a minecraft world by actually combining how you engage with the natural world and resources of minecraft with things like reusing, recycling, not taking the resources you get for granted or excess and such. this is a really cool base, pearl

I do get where Ren is coming from with the chorus flowers. Due to the limited options we have in the game for purple shades, chorus and purpur are *tough* to work into a build palette. It would be helpful to have a wider variety for that. Maybe we'll get some nice purple wood eventually?

  • @febblepebble
    @febblepebble Před 21 dnem +1

I'm with Ren, I love these types of farms where they still require you to do something but are ultimately making the job easier than if you were to do it completely manually. I think it fits the solarpunk theme well too, since that way you're a lot less likely to create far more than you need, since you still have to do it yourself to a degree

An idea: It would be cool to add in the background of the chorus farm like a run down (maybe old) windmill just to kind of give the feel of maybe it powered the chorus farm from years ago and since it's old and run down now, you switched to the flying windmills.

  • @kaspermygenfordt2323

I feel like it would be cool if you added a barren or toxic area apart from the solarpunk, to give it some contrast and maybe the idea that the base is reclaiming the land and bringing back that lush green vibe. Idk could add a little story to the structure and I think the base needs a certain contrast.

Love the additions. You could consider moveing the wind engergy thingies up, maybe 40-50 blocks?
Would be more realistic and you would not need to bend the trees. Maybe you can test in creative, but I think this would give your base a more characteristic design (and put solal pannels on top of the wind thingies).

34:00 They're just called "airborne wind turbines."
The idea behind them is wind close to the ground suffers from drag and turbulence, so wind is usually faster at higher altitudes, which is why they're designed to fly - to get the wind turbine up to those higher altitudes with minimal infrastructure. Ultimately it's just for aesthetics, so what I'm about to say doesn't really matter, but those turbines would be flying very low if they were real. Ideally they'd be floated above the tree-line (probably even above the mountain top) to make full use of the wind. The trees in particular would cause a lot of that turbulence that reduces airflow.

  • @Harlizarrd

I love that you were able to take Ren's feedback with grace and understanding his intention, cause I give feedback in the same way. It irks me that I'm like this, but often it's way easier for me to point out things that "feel wrong", which means that in general, everything else was great! I just don't really have the words to say that as easily.

pearl, i absoloutley envy your little cars, however ive been into solar punk architecture for a while, and carbon emmisions and cars in general are usually seen as anti-solarpunk. Solar punk is usually focused around public transportation, using monorail solar powered trains, subways, trans, busses, and maybe even some sort of aircrafts. Now that i think of it, the cars arent really seeming to be meant to be active and are sort lf just getting re used, such as the flower truck, but i think they would receycle old cars in the solar punk age. Anyways, this is just my advice, i love your creativity and its why youre my favorite builder, so do what you wish

For those lower plants, instead of just sticking a chorus plant on end stone and calling it a day, place a chorus flower, put a flowering azalea leaves block on top of it then encase both blocks in glow lichen, would make a neat little purple-y pale bush/shrubbery that ties in nicely with your trees.
