- Red Deer is the third largest city in the Canadian province of Alberta, located halfway between Calgary and Edmonton, and is home to a population of over 100,000.
It’s also home to Red Deer Regional Airport (CYQF), which serves Central Alberta with plenty of general aviation and charter traffic.
On November 5th, 2020, Nav Canada introduced air traffic control service 16 hours a day, with the airspace becoming Class D during that time.

Thanks for the update. I've followed this one closely. My home airport (Kamloops CYKA) is the busiest non-towered airport in B.C. and on a nice Saturday afternoon it's totally nuts. One flight school in operation and a second one starting up, plus airlines and other stuff.

Great video Alex, and an exciting development at YQF. The FSS team were fantastic when I did my PPL there several years ago, and it's great to see the next step forward occur.
Alex… if you can snag a ride on one of those Electras, it would be well worth your effort. A fantastic aeroplane. Built like a tank.
No scheduled operations I'm afraid, but I won't say no if someone at Buffalo or Air Spray offers haha!
@@AlexPraglowskiAviation Have you tried contacting Mikey McBryan?
If you talk to Mikey or Buffalo Joe (his dad) they could probably hook you up for a ride on the Electra. But most of their scheduled ops are out of Yellowknife. During these Covid times they might tell you to come back when this crap is all done.
Nice video!
A trip to Red Deer would be well worth at just to see those L1 88 Lockheed Electras.
Happy Sunday✈

Now YQF just needs passenger flight service back! Then when I tell people I'm "flying home for a visit" I will actually be able to mean it without specifying I'm either landing at YYC or YEG! I love YQF. It is such a neat little airport!
I grew up in Springbrook (the hamelt connected to the rd Airport) I used to go climb on the boneyard or airplanes me and a buddy used a burned out by-plane as a teater todder till a wing broke off
My mother helped start an international ESL college called Harvest Park on the old base there during the mid 1990"s
How about a video explaining the announcement of possibly closing 7 air traffic control stations and the possible side effects?!
IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME!!!!
DTD!!!! That bird has a history...AMAZING restoration happened on CZcams with Mikey McBryan. It was called PLANE SAVERS.
GO WATCH AMAZING
How is this in any way logical considering Nav Can seeking to close down at 7 places where Airlines offer commercial service? See www.cbc.ca/news/politics/nav-canada-studying-cutting-air-traffic-controller-jobs-covid-19-1.5813372
i am a student pilot at red deer now, quite like it! red deer tower is so nice, kind ,friendly......enjoy flying here
Do you know anything about the Winnipeg Flight Information office closure?

This airport was mentioned a lot during Ice Pilots tv show. I think Buffalo Airways has their main aircraft storage hangers there.
Great video Alex. One small thing, YQL took over YQF as the 3rd largest city in AB. Small amount, and doesn't change YQF's needs as I think it will be a fast growing concern...but...Liquorbridge folks who watched this with me pointed it out!
The difference is literally in the hundreds. It's safer to say that they are tied for third place, because there is a margin of error.
@@gerble36 LOL...thanks for proving my point a little bit. People will argue about the smallest things!
Very interesting!
nice shots of DTD
This is a very informative video, thanks so much for sharing Alex. Good to hear that despite everything that has happened this year they're still committed to making that change to better manage the mix of traffic in the future. Thank you for sharing mate. Liked ✈️ 👍
super interesting, thx for the video!
I got a flight there tomorrow
That’s my home airport I do my flight training there!
Prairie Airports - it's so flat you could stick a fold-out chair on the roof and call it ATC..
Great move for Red Deer!
O I wish, from the tower (a squat little 2 story building as mentioned) we can't see 4510 ft of a 7500 ft runway.... 😜 Thank gawd for the cameras! 😂
A friend of mine is a FSS out of Red Deer for Nav Canada!
ah good old penhold
Spent many a summer there as an Air Cadet.
You mean Springbrook?
Is that you at 5:31 of the video?
I often visit red deer and I like watching how it develops but I do wonder now that there are class D ATC services that more airline service will continue especially flights to YVR and maybe some vacation destinations as Red deer is Alberta's 3rd largest city
Great video! I would've loved to have that level of access to see the classic DC-3s and Electra's. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! Red Deer has some really nice views, those were all shot behind the fence!
