- 17-Year-Old Student Pilot Emergency When Landing Gear Falls Off
Episode 3 of Air Traffic Control Stories
17-year-old student pilot, Maggie Taraska, had just taken off from Beverly Regional Airport in Massachusetts for her first solo cross-country flight, headed for Portland, Maine. But, just a few minutes into the flight, her plane, a Piper PA-28, lost its right main wheel.
A pilot on the ground saw the wheel fall off the plane and contacted air traffic control, who then contacted Maggie.
This is the conversation between Maggie Taraska and air traffic control on September 9, 2018.

Unnecessary communications and pauses were trimmed for clarity.
The positions of the aircraft may not be 100% accurate. Only involved aircraft are shown. Animations are based on air traffic control communications and data from flight tracking services.

As a father, the terror in her voice is so hard to hear.
Painful🥺 indeed.
Agreed, hard to choke back the tears on this one@@sailaab
Bet you had the proud dad vibes when she nailed the landing 🙂
I didn't understand the fear, since this problem carries little risk of death.
@@YuriRosas_Her lack of experience might mean she doesn’t know that. Also, you can be scared when unexpected things happen even if you don’t believe you’re going to die. Uncertainty is especially scary for people who lack confidence in their ability to handle a situation (like a student, who has never prepared for these circumstances and may lack confidence even without the additional complication).
tldr; Stress goes from motivating to debilitating when you think you can’t manage the cause.
You could hear how she went from completely freaked out upon hearing the news to calm and ready to land just before touching down. Excellent work on the parts of her and those on the ground assisting.
She wasn't even freaked out, she sounded nervous but she totally held it together
Great job. Obviously very nervous but she held it together well. Deserves all the praise she got.
I cannot _begin_ to imagine how terrified I would be. Wonderful job to Maggie, to ATC, and to instructor John. First solo flight seems like one of those times a person would feel like they've made it out of the woods, too. She accomplished something most people can only hope they would be capable of, in a scenario and under pressure everyone hopes they never have to face.
Actually, if you listen to the other videos on this story, not her first solo flight but her first solo cross-country flight. But that doesn't take away at all from the outstanding manner in which this girl handled this emergency. Apparently, first solo cross-country is quite a nerve-wracking flight to prepare for and negotiate. You just do not want this thing to happen solo with this few hours' flying experience, even less on your first cross-country sortie. I am full of admiration with how this girl conquered her initial terror and took control of the situation. Kudos also to the instructor who calmed her and talked her all the way down to the landing. HIs cool, reassuring words of encouragement and quietly authoritative instructions to Maggie about what to do were a joy to listen to. If I ever were to take flying lessons, I could not covet a better flying instructor than this man.
Incidentally, five days later she was back up on a flight with him in the passenger seat as her instructor.
I still tear up when I see this. How the ATC gal turned on her mother mode to CFI John with his calming voice and instruction. But especially Maggie. Way to step it up young one! If I were in your shoes, I probably would not be able to recover like you did. Hats off to all involved!!!
I’m a grandpa with an amazing granddaughter. I couldn’t stop crying the whole time I’m listening to this. I am so proud of this amazing, brave young lady and the ATC that helped get her down safely.
As a mother, this also had me in tears
This one ALWAYS brings whole range of emotions in me.
So heart warming and overwhelming to note that there was such excellent camaraderie for the other pilot to actually report it.
And obviously hats-off to you🙇🏻♂️ Maggie👌🏼👍🏼.. but just as much to the team in the tower who could calm Maggie's nerves down and finally how John sir💙🤍 like a true professional.. still dropped in that much pressure of 'center line' on to his super nervous student.
Ny the way her voice was much less stressed once she heard the reassuring words from a voice familiar to her.
As a student pilot I can only imagine how scared she was when she heard that first call, she did great !
ATC

1:08 Mother mode + Professional controller mode
Multitasking !
As a Dad i was woried. And hearing her voice crack made my heart hurt. But as an former military CFR firefighter, Maggie, instructor John and the ATC crew done a AWESOME JOB! The way she calmed down when John came up on the net, was so cool. Great job everyone. This made my day
I like the initial call from the tower and she answers "yeah".
That little girl is a hard ass keeping calm and not freaking out
How can you not fall in love with aviation. This community, although it does seem cold at times, always comes together to take care of each other. It’s an amazing feeling to be a part of such community which accepts everyone without prejudice.
Love the communication from ATC. Student did a great job 🙏❤️
These are my favourite videos. I'm usually a cynical person so when I hear these stories of people getting together to help someone in distress it restores my faith in humanity. Thanks for posting this!
By the way, I admire that Maggie was back in a plane continuing to learn after her scary incident. She must really want to be a pilot, and I suspect she'll make a better one than she would have otherwise before this incident. This is all part of her experience of being a pilot, and knowing how she will react in an emergency and how to get through it. Major kudos to Maggie and everyone that helped her!
Beautiful. This made me cry a little 😊
The best "and thankfully no one was injured" episode on this channel.
As a father of a daughter, I'm literally tearing up to hear how scared she was!
She would have better gotten major bonus points for a successful emergency landing on her 1st solo!
The circumstances she faced , will make her stronger for her entire life.
That adorable little girl has done a great job. And john, the instructor deserves a medal.
I love the whole video. Thanks for sharing.
The moment the other pilot said to the ATC that her right main gear is missing and most likely fallen off was truly bone chilling. I am glad that Maggie still able to land her aircraft safely back to Beverly Regional Airport. I think she did a great job in this scary solo flight.
Incredibly touching how they all came together helping her.
I've heard this before. Still made me tear up
What is really amazing for me is that this is the EXACT same Warrior I made my first solo in 1989 in Southern California. Later , after getting my pilots license, I made dozens of flights/trips in this warrior unitl I moved up to other aircraft (later getting my multi-engine)
Do you think that it's repairable?
@@DanEBoyd Yes, I believe I read elsewhere that it has been repaired
What an amazing instructor she has. He's a model for other instructors.
I'm soooo proud of her! Brings tears to my eyes
That was incredible, thanks for uploading!!
Knowledge, experience, calm and a whole team where each one is doing its best to help.
I have three daughters and the fear in her voice made my heart sink and shed a tear
Paying attention to your training pays off.
I remember this when it happened, it was really emotional...
I had a gasket blow on an engine on my first cross country. So scarry. Good job girl.
Were you scarred for life?
Nope. Just glad I paid attention in class.

Oldie but goldie.
her voice is kinda cute LOL you just wanna go awwww and give her a hug
Great work from everyone here!
Bless her, she sounded so terrified!🥹
She did a great job!
Bless her heart. Well done ❤❤
Great job, Maggie and John
This guy my age out here being a pilot, what am i doing with my life.
Legend has it the instructor is still on their way....
You did great Maggie... simply perfect... 8)
Brilliant, glad she got down safe
Bravo!
Imagine that was your daughter flying that plane. So much respect to all the traffic controllers out there keeping the skies safe. But she did so good under that much pressure
74Gear had this shown some months ago. Broke my heart to hear her voice.
What a spectacular young woman. Great job!
stepping your game up lucaas
Omg the poor girl. I could barely drive a car at 17. She did so amazing
I want to rent a plane from that place... NOT! I'm glad she didn't quit flying after this. She did great.
I'd love to hear an update on Maggie's flying career. She did a great job. Hopefully she's flying for the majors these days!
DANG THIS BROKE ME , 48 YR OLD DUDE HERE BALLING, FLAT OUT SLINGING SNOT , THE FEAR IN HER VOICE AND SHE SOUNDS LIKE MY DAUGHTER , DAMN IT I DIDNT SEE THIS COMING, PEOPLE STARING AT ME NOW
Happened a few years ago... She's known on some avgeek channels as Captain Maggie
Well done Maggie ❤
Nice story with a happy ending
Who got the happy ending?
We're looking at a future Airforce pilot. Most likely a very happy one. Congratulations Maggie we're proud of you. USAF
We clearly won't be sending our best then..
"Luckily, no one was injured!!!" 😃😃😃
Her instructor was amazing. He took her from so scared, holding in tears, to feeling confident and calm ready for the landing.
God was with her or a guardian angel. Light winds best conditions possible full tank plenty of daylight, the winds that were there were going to the left, and she needed to land on her left wheel , perfect conditions
Wow 🤯😮
I commend Maggie, for keeping her cool.👍🌹
She sounds waaaaaay under prepared for solo. ATC was magic.
Why? She did great with the landing. How did you feel after getting your drivers license, and getting pulled over for the first time?
@@axe835I get ya… I was a little harsh. I maintain though if ATC wasn’t so good this would have ended much worse. She still sounded too green to me to be solo in the plane for the flight. Cheers
I went to school with kids that got their pilots licenses before their drivers licenses. And how old do you think the pilots are that was flying gunships and slicks that I babysat as a CFR firefighter in the Army?
Yep. She was literally talking like a little child.
@@axe835 Had she died or killed others you would change your tune. You sound weak and woke.
Wasn't there a similar incident recently with a young pilot named Taylor?
Were the 2 at the end that congratulated her Other pilots that were close by and listening?
Poor lass. She sounds petrified.
I rarely do thumbup but this is is just something..
Maggie you won the lottery...'alright'
Maggie is een kei….angst overwonnen en kist neergezet op de grond….grote klasse dame….
Very old video
That counts as passing, right?
Alright
I wanted to be a pilot but I already gave up on tht dream because of my financial condition i fking cry every day and tell god why... Why I'm facing ths difficulties ik everything about aviation i can fly plane but I can't 🙃
Ever consider radio control model airplanes ? At our club several are commercial pilots who fly RC for fun, also some GA pilots who are out of medical so RC is their only option.
i wonder why they didn’t just belly land it? would sound much safer than tipping over and digging your wing into the ground at high speed
Non retractable landing gear.
Luckily noone was injurred
Apparently.
Why not pull the gear up and belly land? Not as dramatic?
solo at 17 years old ? fewwww.....
a 17 year old student girl flying alone? you just know her parents are very smug types. but that said. she done well
What you said makes no sense and is nowhere near the truth. An instructor will only allow a student pilot to fly solo after they have clearly demonstrated the ability to fly by themselves, which is no easy task for a student pilot. Based on how she flew in a very stressful emergency event (especially for a student pilot with no instructor on the plane), I would say that she demonstrated excellent flying skills. She clearly has the skills to fly, which is exceptional for her age.
this student pilot sounded more like a 12 to 13 year old than i did at 17 years old holy crap what's up with that
That's what happens when your right main gear falls off and you're a relatively new pilot.
Having not heard your radio voice while you're landing your plane with a missing wheel on one of your first solo flights I can't really compare those
the extreme variation that occurs went over 8 billion individuals of one species exist or something idk
Please don't turn into yet another accident investigation channel.
holy crap this video is annoying to watch. noping out of this
sup
This is old as fuck
🇨🇷
First❤
Nobody cares ❤
☕
Just by the sound of her voice...she wasn't mature enough to fly solo.
second ❤
😅
Lol
first✈️✌️😎
Nobody cares
Stupid background music. Not necessary.
I get she's a student pilot, but she should've blocked her emotions. At least take a few seconds to compose herself and think about the situation. You can hear in her voice that she is mildly flustered and doesn't exactly know what to do.
Could be me, but I think when you take on something like getting your pilot license, you should be a strong and assured personality. A mousy personality that sounds like you are about to crawl up and scream help doesn't seem like you should be a pilot. I'm not trying to be mean, but she sounded way to non-confident to me to handle emergency situations that arise in the sky. She literately sounded like she was crying the second they told her. I get it, it's terrifying. But this is when you need to buck up and assure yourself you got this. If not for you, for the many people who are in danger down below.
Unpopular but you are 100% correct.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I know first hand.
I agree with you in a general sense, but I don’t think this girl’s reaction to this situation can be used as a benchmark for her entire personality lol.
Assurance comes from experience. Confidence doesn’t come from nowhere. You learn to trust yourself and your competence through the repetition of success. Repetition she _didn’t have,_ as she was flying her first solo lol. Also, she’s 17? Still growing and maturing? Maybe this is first Serious Situation™ she’s been in. She did fine lol
So, her voice wobbled a couple times ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ She got nervous. Literally happens to everybody lol. Probs sounded worse than it actually was because she’s a part of the Squeaky Speaker Squad™ …some people just sound like a dog whistle when they get worked up lmao
A strong and assured personality as determined by who? you? So no one gets to take lessons unless they pass some kind of test designed by somebody like you? Qualifying as a pilot is dependent on proving suitability by what means and to whom? What planet do you live on anyway? You’ll grow up someday…
@@thatfeeble-mindedboy *You’ll _hopefully_ grow up someday, lol
No disrespect, but there is no way she was ready nor should have been allowed to fly solo if she didn't know what to do..
She knew what to do the plane lost both main wheels to land, she’s never landed a plane like that before because they don’t practice with broken planes
She is not fit to be a pilot. she's not thinking at all and panic for no reason.
We all know you're just here to troll, so here is the attention you were seeking. Now sod off. Misogyny has no place in the skies.
a foolish comment!
Yup, this is a harsh truth but correct.
I disagree. She did nothing wrong and brought the plane in safely. This was an emergency situation and was handled perfectly. Just criticizing her personal emotion in the moment has nothing to do with it. If her gear had not fallen off and you could then listen to what would have been a normal solo flight would you still think she is unfit?
@@commercialsoundandvideo2890 In my opinion, flying a plane is responsible job. Much more than driving a car. and she acted like typical woman behind the wheel. Crying and doing nothing. You have to act, be able to put aside emotion in emergency situation to think clear and straight. Finding best solution and course of action. This student showed shes unable to do that. It is not suppose to be leading by the hand by someone. She should act cool and response to tower with solution after she got info about missing wheel. And everything took to long, even other planes had to delay. plane was safe. I would understand if she was flying with instructor first time and instructor is incapacitated in some way.. but she was flying solo. Like, you have to be somebody, have some skill and level to be able to that.
