I don't understand how little you need to know about video to mess up this badly, but these official sources I love to complain about never fail to disappoint me. I noticed Science Channel posted a "How It's Made" fire fighters compilation, and saw how butchered this episode was. For one, person who runs the Science YT, if you're watching this, if you wanted to butcher a 4:3 broadcast, you should've dug through your videotape library, and used the original 4:3 version of this episode. And for another thing, Science YT owner, this episode was already rendered in widescreen for the US version. How It's Made was in videotaped in 4:3 up until the fifth season when they started recording episodes in 16:9, but when the first eight seasons of the show were given a different appearance in 2007 for US broadcasting, a few of the original 4:3 episodes (from the second and third seasons) were cropped to many variations of 16:9, then letterboxed to 4:3. I don't know why they did this, I don't know why those episodes couldn't be left in their original aspect ratio, but this decision could've been great futureproofing for today's digital streaming. All they would've had to do was crop away the letterboxing and de-interlace and upscale the video (for reference, Discovery UK has many of the early 4:3 episodes cropped to wide and it looks a lot better). Oh wait, that's what I had to do to make this comparison. I'm eventually going to upload this episode to my @defyingdiscovery_ channel with time, but for now, enjoy a lost opportunity for an official source to redeem themselves. There were a few other early episodes on the@sciencechannel YT butchered in this way that I will also compare for you to see the damage they did.
By the way, up until very recently in the show's run, How It's Made has always been a show in 59.94 frames per second (29.97 interlaced), and no one but me ever bothers to de-interlace this stuff. guys what are you doing, demand better video preservation than this
