  • I'd like to thank Ian and Attila for sending me a candy selection from Germany, Slovakia and the Czech republic. There are some very interesting flavours and some absolutely horrific ones too, but in a good more-ish type of way.
    If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
    www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
    This also keeps the channel independent of CZcams's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

    I was watching this video with a huge smile on my face during the entire duration, I'm not sure why.
    I'm happy you liked the sweets I sent you. Obviously, I couldn't include everything (like Študentská Pečať chocolate, or Kofola drink) as I had to keep the weight under two kilograms, so it would still classify as a letter. I ended up at about 1970 grams...

      Could you quickly run down what you sent Clive and tell everyone what's in them? -because I have a strong suspicion the first one he tried had chestnut paste in it and he also clearly missed a coconut based one.
      I lament we don't get the central European treats over here on the West coast.

      They are literally inventing brand names for separate countries around the clock. Chances are if you see a "local brand" candy that has a nestle/mars logo on it, it's not "bought up" from a preexisting company, but rather "invented" by the company.

    The salt in salty licorice is ammonium chloride. The dusting on the candies is usually some mix of sugar, ammonium chloride, and possibly citric acid for sourness, depending on the brand.

    • @ska042

    • @tarnvedra9952

      Does ammonium chloride cause high blood pressure like sodium chloride does?

    • @OlliWilkman
      @OlliWilkman Před 6 lety +2

      Yeah, just pointing it out in case people think it's mostly sodium chloride in the candies (sometimes there actually is a little bit, but it's pretty rare as far as I've encountered).

    • @OlliWilkman
      @OlliWilkman Před 6 lety +1

      I believe so, at least as kids in Finland (where salty licorice is very popular), we were warned about it. But on the other hand licorice itself causes high blood pressure, so I don't know how big the salt's contribution is.

    • @rasmis
      @rasmis Před 6 lety +7

      I'm from Copenhagen, so when I lived in Southern France I always brought big bags of ammonium chloride. French liquorice is just sugar coloured black. When border agents queried about at my plastic bags with white powder, I just had to say “salmiak” and they'd wave me through.

    I wish to say - You're one of my favorite channels to watch for two reasons. First, you're informative and relevant to my interests. I've learned things watching these videos. Also humorous (the zappy camping lamps being my favorites so far).
    Second, you're relaxing. I have to get up to go to work early at 5 AM tomorrow, and it's currently 10:34 PM, and I can think of nothing better to do than to watch some long Clive videos while sitting in my big poofy armchair and nodding off to sleep. I suspect when I wake up autoplay will be paused on something loosely tied to electronics and my TV will have correctly surmised that I have passed out and turned itself off.
    It's the intonation of your voice and the way you're never sort of spiking the volume of your words that makes these relaxing to watch. Hard to describe.
    Keep doing your thing.

    As a Czech I'd like to fill some blanks. Good selection of sweets, the only missing thought l thing coming to mind is the traditional gingerbread with jam and chocolate.
    The "sójové řezy" thing that puzzled you so much is "soy slices" and is one of the cheapest things you can get. Very good and satiating. And is the same thing that's inside the "Margot" bar. Eating one of these is as good as a decent meal so it's always good to have one around.
    Pro tip regarding the "ledové kaštany" put them into a fridge overnight, that will explain the name "iced chestnuts." Very hard and very dark.
    Now the paste inside "kofila" is chocolate with coffee. The Arabian-looking fellow enjoying a cup of coffee and the coffee bean is a clue.
    The "Hašlerky" is a sweet with over a dozen herbs in it but what is really interesting (aside the flavour) is the manufacturing process. They mix the substance very thick and pull it into a rod about half-inch in diameter, and punch it into the desired shape in much like steel is treated in factories.
    "Mila" is popular for its mellow texture and won the "unhealthiest product" competition several times over the years. Still people favour it, nonetheless. And for a good reason.
    What else.. if you got the impression that there's coconut in just about everything, then you're right. Despite being a country with no sea or tropical flora we sure love our coconut.

    I literally spend hundreds of euros on those candy every year. For me, the taste is just unique and we're all used to it. I rather like the Sedita wafers and Figaro chocolate. Figaro was founded in the early 20th century in my hometown, Trnava, Slovakia. They still produce lollipops and candies I believe. Sadly, they were acquired by Mondelēz 5 years ago.
    You can get every single one of those products in almost literally every grocery store and gas pump in the country.

    Interesting stuff. Never seen any of it here in the US. It's amazing how tastes differ worldwide, but in the US we have followings for most 'extreme' flavors, tart (citric acid based) and hot of course. but the salt and anise not so much. One that I had a few years ago and was impressed with was a pressed sesame bar of asian (I think Korean?) origin, and it was quite good.
    Nice overview, you do interesting and informative videos on anything you cross paths with - good show!

    Very nice, very nice. To see a celebrity sweets test and also to get a different perspective on something we here in Slovakia and Czech Republic take for granted on the shop shelves.
    Sadly the majority of the traditional Czech sweets have been fully colonized by global corporations and the recipes have been changed - "optimized" - or rather cheapened somewhat. Nestle and Mondelez now own the traditional brands like Orion, Figaro and Sfinx and all the bars like Koko, Margot, Kofila, Kastany, Deli. One of the few truly local brands in this selection is Sedita from Slovakia - all the wafers like Mila, Kavenky and Horalky and also Snehulky and the circular cookies. Also Marina biscuits are locally owned and made in Slovakia. Also this reminds me of TatraTea - herbal liquor from Slovakia, perhaps you have heard of it.
    Those German black salty chilli things at the end were hilarious, I have to try them sometime :D

    Big Clive, you should definitely try Moravian or Slovak wine and brandy. Especially the home distilled spirits are fantastic, strong but if produced properly you have no hungover on next day after drinking sprit with 52% abv or more. It usually looks like vodka, clear but aromatic after fruit (plums, grapes or gin like "borovička" made of juniper berries).
