      I absolutely *adore* it and have fallen in love with Starkid, and I'm so glad I was introduced to them through it because I probably wouldn't have watched any of their musicals otherwise. I feel like other shows tend to make their characters too simple because “it’s a comedy!” Also, they both have Dylan and Meredith as a romantic duo and they just work so well together, especially vocally. Don't mind me~~~
    - Granger Danger is a wonderful song, but it's overrated.
    - The Dragon Lullaby is super sweet, and it gives us a little insight of Harry and how he feels about being a famous boy.
    - They handled JJ's suicide attempt in ANI super well.
    - Work To Do is VERY overrated, and gets annoying after a while.
    - Holy Musical B@man and ANI have the best music in terms of underrated-ness.
    - Molag is the best character in Firebringer.
    - The foreshadowing in the Independence song is tremendous.
    - Mariah's voice is beautiful, but Not Your Seed isn't a great song.
    - Holy Musical B@man is the best musical in terms of costumes and creativity.
    - Twisted is the second best Starkid villain song (first one is Kick It Up A Notch because nobody can beat Dylan and his badassery of holding his hands up in puppet mouths for over ten minutes while singing)

    Not necessarily an unpopular opinion but an uncommon one ig. I feel that Robert Manion definitely deserves all the love that he gets but it's mostly for the wrong reasons. Lots of people love him because he plays funny characters and not because he's genuinely a fantastic actor and singer and dancer. He has a more clear and dynamic voice than some of those on Broadway. I think he honestly stands out because he puts so much effort into character *and you can tell.* The reason people love his characters is because of all the love he puts into playing them and he deserves more recognition for his technique and talent rather than just the people he's playing *In this essay I will*

    Yeah, Ani had a pretty unfortunate set up. The show is funny of course but:
    1. The style (both structurally and musically) is so incredibly different from any other Starkid show. It was bound to alienate some fans. The whole idea is interesting but very strange, even for Starkid: Star Wars in the style of a 90's Chris Farley movie. It's not much of a surprise that some Starkid fans didn't really latch on to it.
    2. The decision to have the songs performed offstage by the band didn't do the score any favors. The music is actually pretty good, but it just doesn't have much of an impact. It's much more effective to hear the characters sing the songs, rather than hearing them come from disembodied offstage voices. If you look at the amount of plays Starkid songs have had on Spotify, pretty much the entirety of Ani's (very solid) score is sitting at the bottom of the list. That's a real shame honestly.
    3. The show was presented in rep with Trail to Oregon, with the inevitable result being that fans would compare the two shows and one would end up being much more popular than the other. Obviously, Trail to Oregon (which is one of my favorites) ended up taking off as a Starkid favorite while poor Ani was left in the dust. For example, the videos for both musicals came out about 4-5 years ago. Currently, Ani has about 708,000 views. By comparison, Trail to Oregon has almost 2 million.
    4. As the video pointed out, Oregon also had the benefit of having several fan favorites in it like Jeff, Jamie, Joey, and (of course) Lauren, the darling of the Starkid fandom. Ani had a larger cast that consisted of some lesser well known Starkid members, so people might have been more drawn to the cast of Trail to Oregon.
    5. TTO also had a more traditional structure, a fun interactive element that encouraged repeat viewing, etc. Etc. Notice that since the summer of 2014, Starkid hasn't done any more shows in rep. This is probably because they want to avoid what happened with Ani.

      I totally agree. Ani is one of my favourite shows, and it makes me kinda sad that people dislike it that much because is different(? (I mean, I get it if you dislike it for different reasons lmao). I think it's a good show overall, not the best, but is not the worst.
      I think we should appreciate more the effort and originality of this show. We are introduced to some awesome voices that are different and new (Clark, Pierce, Meredith in the background. Talkfine does a great job in the show).
      Some comedy-puns that we are kinda familiar with (HMB) but that it doesn't feel rushed since is part of the character (and the comedy is not only that).
      Since Talkfine is the one doing the music, we can appreciate more on the acting and dancing of the actors, which is brilliant.
      Idk why I did this but ok

      The composition on Firebringer is better than any other Starkid show. Meredith and Mark truly understood how to use the female voices in the cast, and they also understood that harmonies can completely MAKE a song. It's just a beautiful soundtrack with real musical education behind it.
      Twisted has BY FAR the best lyrics of any Starkid show. The songs are catchy as hell, and there are so many layered jokes/references in them that it never gets old listening to the soundtrack. There's always something new to pick up on.

    @estherschick388 Před 4 lety +80

    I think I agree with all of these, except I'm not so sure that Jaime is even in my top five Starkid singers. I think it's because everything she sings is very dramatic and over-done, because she obviously has some serious vocal chops (Join Us and Die, like woah) but in songs like The Night Belongs to Snarl, you can hear that she's not really singing with her real voice. She tends to sing in her throat and let the vibrato take control; which works when she's trying to be silly, but it's not the most pleasant vocal tone to me. I really hope we get some more vocals from her in Black Friday like we did in TGWDLM, because I think she has the talent and is probably a very good singer; they just give her really crappy characters to show off her "serious" voice. She really is one of the best actors in Starkid though, I definitely agree on that one.

      and I should say that this is all personal opinion; singers like Cher, Celine Dion and Shakira are all very popular and have super throaty tones to their voices, so some obviously people must really like that tone. Tbh, Starship just has a great story structure and amazing concept that's why it worked out really well and is my all time favorite musical Starkid did. All of the songs keep replaying in my head especially Kick It Up A Notch and its reprise. It's something you see on a Broadway show that wins like 3 Tony's. And also because of the concept and the story structure, it can be presented in different mediums of entertainment too like animation (like the animatics Mak did here on youtube), comics, novels, etc. just fine and it will still turn into a masterpiece (it just depends how directors and writers execute it). And also, how could I forget the worldbuilding established beforehand? You can explore it more too like Junior's family relationship, how Megagirl was created, Taz and Commander Up's backstory, the robot war, the farm planet Tootsie grew up in, and so many more. Ughhh I can't stop gushing about how great it is!!!

    Haha 16 has been my unpopular opinion for a long time I'm so glad to know someone else agrees with me. Along with the higher production quality for me I think it comes down to the way they blend the plots of the first, third, and fifth books so well. Replacing the troll on Halloween with Lupin in the shrieking shack. Discovering the mirror of Erised and meeting Sirius at the same time. The blending of the stories is just done so well. Like umbridge being the one who sentences Sirius to death makes so much sense to me I often forget it isn't actual potter canon.
    When you compare AVPM to AVPS in this aspect, AVPM seems like it is sort of just a thrown together/ hap hazard mixture of books 4 and 7 (with maybe some 6).

    *Commissioner Gordon in Holy Musical B@tman annoyed me too

  • @mrsphealtheseal
    @mrsphealtheseal Před 4 lety +33

    Oh, I have some unpopular opinions
    • TGWDLM is extremely overrated. It has great songs and a storyline sure, but it pales in comparison to Twisted, Starship, and even a very Potter Sequel
    •AVPSY deserves more love, but since they didn't have a lot of time to rehearse it's considered rather low in people's rankings. It has a really beautiful ending and all of its songs are phenomenal.
    •Work to do is now that song people like ironically. Unlike Show Stoppin' number which is truly overrated. Don't get me wrong, I love it. But it overshadows songs like "what do you want Paul?" And "Join us and Die". And that's just in TGWDLM
    •Firebringer's songs are great but get the lower end of the stick due to its mediocre comedy. It has better songs than the TTTO (mostly) but its story is just rushed after act 1
    •Merideth is a better Hermione than Bonnie. Avpsy doesn't count because that was literally her first time even playing that role. With the small amount of time she was given to rehearse it's no wonder why she'd be mediocre in that sense. She does a much better job in the Starkid Reunion.
    •(Not really unpopular) but A.J Holmes needs to be in another Starkid show. He was in MAMD and AVPSY. Plus he did the Twisted Demo but that was it.

    • @joelatkin1214
      @joelatkin1214 Před 4 lety +9

      I disagree a lot with the Hermione one, Bonnie was epitome of Hermione and I believe that she’s actually Hermione a lot more than I do with Meredith. Don’t get me wrong I adore Meredith, I just prefer her so much more as Jemilla, Megagirl and Scheherazade

    I've watched firebringer three times probably. I find it to be more charming than funny or dramatic. Like there are so many good things about it, but also many bad things, and they don't balance each other out, so I'm just left a bit indifferent. But I like it, and Climate Change is criminally underrated.
    However, I think the one thing that really kills Firebringer is the timing of the jokes. Some of them just kept going on forever, making me groan at times.

  • @silviamayo2993
    @silviamayo2993 Před 4 lety +4

    1. Agreed, and I don't think that's unpopular, I've heard that before.
    2. I don't really ship Zazzalil and Keeri enough to want them to be a main couple, but I definitely agree that there should have been more Jazzalil build up. I mean, as funny as it is, Zazzalil's "Wait you're gonna hold me to that? ... Okay, I'm into it." is the least romantic way to start a relationship.
    3. I'm gonna (politely) stop you right there, and remind you that Ani exists.
    4. That's correct.
    5. Yeah, and you're not alone on that.
    6. I don't know, man, sometimes I feel like every Starkid actor is the best Starkid actor, you know?
    7. I've honestly never thought about it in that way, but it checks out.
    8. Haha, you're right.
    9. Yeah, I think everyone felt that.
    10. Okay but I still feel like it's good enough to deserve more regonition than it gets. I mean the acting is great, Clark fucking delivers, and it has that trademark Starkid humor mixed in with super touching moments (they handled suicide better than 13 Reasons Why, in a comedy).
    11. True.
    12. Never thought about it, but I think that may just apply to TTO and Firebringer, TGWDLM is certainly one of Starkid's darker shows.
    13. Twisted is definitely in the top two if not best, but while I love Starship to pieces, even Nick Lang has said it's their worst show (which I disagree with but still, what a hot take on your part).
    14. Re-fucking-tweet.
    15. Yup, and it makes sense, it was their first show (I mean unless you count the Lord of the Rings parody or whatever).
    16. I agree, though I feel like AVPSY gets more hate than it deserves.

    I think A Very Potter Senior Year is criminally underrated and doesn't get enough love because it's a staged reading. I think they handled having scripts and a voice over for most set extremely well. Even playing off of it. It takes true talent to take those situations and still make a spectacular show! Also, the songs are still ridiculously amazing. "When I Was" from that show is arguably one of their most beautiful and heart wrenching songs. Joe Walker is right up there with Dylan in my opinion. Probably even better than Darren Chris.

    unpopular opinion: avpsy is underrated. personally it’s my favorite from the potter series, but maybe that’s just me. it was rushed and was used just as a final goodbye to the series, for closure, but the acting of many of the scenes and the singing in it shines through. it made me cry multiple times unlike avpm and avps and tied up loose ends and some of the characters’ flaws, at least bringing them to light

    1. I get what you mean, I wish it had been slightly more of a dramedy, but I think the comedy it goes for is solid, just not fantastic or anything
    2. I feel like that wouldn't make sense for the overall philosophical arc, and that a relationship with Keeri would have a power imbalance due to her willingness to do what everyone tells her to - she'd have to undergo a character arc about learning to be her own person before even being in the running. Plus, the combo of Zazz and Jemilla reflects the leadership styles they learn to use.
    3. yes, wizard god, yes
    4. MAMD comedy is highly underrated and fucking spectacular but for me nothing will ever beat the AVP series in comedy
    5. yes. it's really funny, especially once you realize it's a parody of the whole ancient aliens thing, but it is so out of left field. I heard once in an interview that Nick Lang was worried it would be "too obvious" and I was like WHY
    6. fair and valid. I have a bias here bc of my long-standing crushes on Lauren Lopez and Joey Richter.
    7. Y E S
    8. bold of you to assume it wasn't a good painting (jk I get what you're saying but the artist jokes are so quality)
    9. absolutely. 10/10
    10. I mean yeah, it was never going to be a more popular musical, but I wouldn't say it failed. It just didn't get as popular as the rest - it's still a fantastic musical.
    11. yessssss
    12. fair. I feel like this balance is what made the AVP series so good. Firebringer was sort of the last one with that good good balance - it's hard to take TTO seriously with the imbalance between drama and comedy
