It’s subjective, she wasn’t advising anyone to NOT go volunteer. It’s a personal experience she shared with us. It’s honest and informative so no one is caught off guard or blame her for a negative experience at rescue. 🙄 some people really don’t listen 😂

    • @thankmargordon2329

Naw, what you shared should tell owners of bunnies that they would be better to not volunteer
The biggest problem is they could bring a disease home
A person volunteering should foster a bunny who's already at risk
A person wanting to volunteer for anything would be best to foster a controllable amount, 2 or 3 will keep a person busy if they do it cleanly and correctly

Look, I understand people have different personalities and approaches. But manipulation is still manipulation and we all know when it’s happening, no matter how covert or Underhanded it is, and that is never OK. It’s so beyond clear she was manipulative and using their age for authority, implementing mind games, and leveraging someone’s goodwill and naive nature against them

This is definitely the rescue where we adopted our bunnies 3 years ago. We have so many horror stories from that place. The people who volunteer have really good intentions, but “Kayla” is such a toxic person. During her demonstration grooming sessions, she would RIP our bunny’s fur off so badly that it looked like those angora fur farm videos. I started crying watching it! Never talked to them again after that.

  • @KathrinJakob
    @KathrinJakob Před 3 měsíci +43

I personally had experience with this rescue and was also disappointed on how humans were treated by the owner and how things were organized and how fosters and volunteers were taken advantage of. It’s unfortunate because we are all for rescuing animals, it just sucks when it’s done at the expense of good willing people. I had to overcome some minor trauma that the owner instilled in me regarding my bunnies. I should’ve trusted my gut, but I am very happy I have my bunny from Bunny universe now. Being around narcissists is never nice or good for you and that’s the lesson I learned from this.

I believe I also know which rescue she is talking about becuase I had bad experiences with them as well, I'm sure the bunny I wanted to adopt, died in their care with no one adopting them. Also someone in charge tried to bad mouth Lorelei I think, but anyway that person is gone now and I got my bunny, whom I love, from a shelter. I don't know how the rescue is doing with the change in leadership but I don't wanna get close to find out honestly. Me and others I met through this experience just had a really bad time. I'm happy Lorelei could share her story now. This video along with your comment, and me writing this comment is giving me a small slice of support and community that makes me feel better.

Hi Lorelai! I’m a board member for Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary, and it sounds like you had the unfortunate experience of dealing with a truly horrible person while trying to do good in the bunny world. As you say, and I’m sure you know, not all rescues are like this! I am lucky to work for a Sanctuary that has a physical property and does not have fosters, but the issues you bring up are real ones. I think you bring up absolutely valid points: volunteers can often be taken advantage of in terms of time, workload, etc. But, like you said, there are plenty of orgs that do great work without taking advantage of volunteers’ kindness. I’d be happy to chat more with you or anyone interested in learning more about the Sanctuary I’m associated with! :) thank you for all that you do in educating the bunny community!

We boarded our bun with “bunny universe” once during our honeymoon - at the time, it felt like there weren’t many options in LA for a long term stay. We got such a weird vibe from “Kayla” that we never went back. It absolutely felt cult-ish.

    • @Kayla-mw9lu
      @Kayla-mw9lu Před 3 měsíci +3

I stopped boarding with her because she kept telling me my rabbit was extremely underweight and took it upon herself to call the vet screaming at the both of us to get an appointment right that second. I thought it was SUPER invading that she would go and make the call for me then demand the vet to open up their schedule. Afterwards, she had pulled my buns old info up from when I rescued him & it was the wrong bun she’d mistaken mine for! 3x his size. Of course she would think mine was underweight lol. Crazy rabbit lady for sure

I have heard people say this. Also those trying to adopt a bunny from a rescue. One particular person should have been able to adopt, but was not. Seems the volunteers liked the bunny and didn't want to let him go. She had plenty of money, great job, large home, worked from home, no other animals, willing to provide a home check (no, not talking about myself, lol, no money here! haha). She asked me about it because I had bunnies.

Hi Lorelai, as someone who just went through a very similar situation with their job i totally sympathize with you! It is so draining and soul crushing to be giving something your all and for there to be no recognition or appreciation given back. It's such a waste of time and energy dealing with those people that you're better off getting and staying away. No one should be shamed for refusing to be a doormat. Don't let that negative experience affect the way you view yourself or other bunny rescues ❤

  • @rogergarciaofficial

The manipulation part is real, when I adopted my couple I was told I'd get a free entry to a brushing clinic so as to learn how to properly brush, and I asked 'Kayla' if my bunnies needed to be brushed upon adoption and she said they were just brushed so to make an appointment for a month later.
I went to learn the proper brushing a month later and then left but received a very angry email saying that I stole services and I owed $60/rabbit for having attended.
When I replied to clarify that I was told new adopters get a free visit to the workshop and also that they state in their paperwork after the first visit the 'fee' is considered a donation anyway, not a service, Kayla said that the free visit was only within 7 days of adoption.
BUT THE CATCH: A: she told me they had just been brushed so I could get my free learning workshop in 30 days. AND 2: my buns had to be surrendered to a foster to be "properly bonded" for 7 days!
But yes, they do hear about your channel often as I got scoffed at for mentioning the channel, but overall I know there are a lot of Lorelei's still volunteering there that mean well for the bunnies and do their best. I just tend to keep myself informed of critical info regarding care, vaccines etc.
And even then, it's best to research your own vet vs the highly expensive vets they claim to be the only ones that know about rabbits. But then I later learned it's because they have massive bills with the vets and can only offset it by guaranteeing adopters will become regulars.

  • @Jamiesayla

I completely understand. I work in a local shelter and we do low cost rabbit spays/neuters for individuals and rescues. We had to break ties with a couple rabbit rescues because of their practices. That being said we still work with a rescue that takes in special needs bunnies and they help support us by taking in the buns that our shelter can’t accommodate. Rescue work is hard on many levels and honestly a lot of those who run rescues aren’t cut out for that work.

I’ve had a similar experience with her, but I’m so glad you are speaking on this because during the time, none of the other young volunteers felt the same as I did. I thought maybe I was too emotional or inexperienced with bunnies and that I had no say being that I was a first time rabbit owner while I was in college as well. I agree with your ending credit- she does do a lot for the rabbits and she does care, but she is extremely unprofessional and uses her stress of running the rescue as tact to manipulate everyone who becomes involved. It starts out discreetly with backhanded compliments then gets worse through passive aggressive emails.

Thanks for sharing this - I had a similar experience with a beloved cat and bunny shelter that’s been featured on TV. It has great reviews online, but talking to other volunteers I learned that yeah, some of the people in charge suck. I was often guilted into deep cleaning (scrubbing old poop stains and then scolded for not doing a perfect job??) way past my shift ending and never really got to socialize with the animals like I wanted to. I hope they’ve changed and value their volunteers more these days.

  • @Sunlightmoonbright

The dynamic you describe is universal and not just in the bunny community. You’ve done an excellent job of describing how to tune into our feelings to detect if we feel comfortable or uncomfortable. Knowing how to do this is essential to put our boundaries in the correct place to protect all concerned.
What you describe happens a lot in the holistic & spiritual communities where volunteers give their hearts to the leaders and don’t notice they are being used & manipulated.
At this time of awareness raising - sharing tools is vital to help everyone develop. We don’t need to get distracted by themes or the subject of a group, we need the tools to detect - in any situation - the safe from the unsafe.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom. Healing strength to you on your guided & conscious journey 💕

That person was just toxic. Narsistic discard. I've been through it twice. It's hard when there's your favourite things you love in life involved with in it. In my cases it was music. You can mix the things you love with the hurt so it's pretty hard to go through. I love bunnies/rabbits. It's always been my spirit animal. I've had the same experience with this bunny rescue, down to the same kind of emails that I got from the person who ran the rescue. Zero empathy, nothing but deflecting blame for something that was their fault, and it turned me off FROM THEM AS A RESCUE, but definitely not from any other bunny rescue. I was able to see that this highly manipulative individual was the problem, and I saw the honest & bad reviews from former volunteers too late. I admire them for where their heart is, as well as the volunteers who have given their time and labor, but unfortunately, their reputation for how they treat their volunteers is extremely disappointing. I would happily and readily recommend ANY OTHER BUNNY RESCUE in the state over this one and I am speaking from experience, not just from rumors.
When you speak to former volunteers (or former members) from any organization, group, religious affiliation, ANYTHING, you will find out both the good, and the bad, and at least you go in with both eyes open. Thank you for speaking this truth and sharing that involvement with bunny rescues aren't easy, but it shouldn't be made unnecessarily difficult for people who are volunteering because they are human too.

Watching you do makeovers for the bunnies brings tears to my eyes for one because I can honestly see the compassion for the animals. I know Lennon doesn’t understand how lucky she was to find you but I hope she knows how much of yourself you give just because of the love you have for her melted over and you saw a greater purpose and need. That’s because of the love you two share. Know that you are making a difference a huge difference by just being you with a huge heart. You are giving back far greater than you’ll ever know. Because you are reaching beyond Cali all the way to nc. It’s not only that you are reaching countries beyond the states. Just keep doing you. Until 3 years ago I used to foster. Why 3 years ago and why am I not doing it now? Well, the people I was doing the fostering work for gave me a Dutch breed bunny to look after. They knew it’s history of serious aggression and the rabbit was so bad the owner gave it up for drawing blood. When I got this rabbit….call him Diablo… I had to go fetch him from the people running the rescue which was a 40 minute drive to get to them, they had nothing for him not even food. I was given him in a carrier. They said he was lovely and that “I’m the rabbit expert, I can sort him out.” They did not tell me about his aggression, even though they knew.
I took him home and got him settled. He got to meet my own two rabbits a couple of days later. He was aggressive towards them, but did not show any aggression towards me.
On day 4, he looked like he was settling in really well. He didn’t want to be left alone. I tried to pet him, gently at first….and then allowed him to come and go as he wanted….later that evening he allowed me to cuddle him. No wriggling or any warning signs, he appeared to be enjoying the cuddle….until he turned from being in the crook of my elbow to vertically up my body. Then the next thing I remember is him lunging at my face. Then the searing pinch, burn and him being attached to my face!
I tried to get him off, only for him to clamp down harder. I had to “tear” him off my face, literally. Then I felt the warm trickling sensation. There was blood everywhere! I grabbed him and shoved him in his pen. (I used to pen them for a few days until they were used to their surroundings), I ran to the kitchen for the first aid kit, where I very nearly fainted. If I hadn’t got my best buddy with me, I would’ve never have been able to get to the hospital! Diablo had torn through my upper lip, right from under my nose to my lip. I now have a facial disfigurement because of this. The wait in Accident and Emergency was over 14 hours, 10 stitches later and a face that felt like it was on fire for weeks on end. It was difficult to drink and eat and I had to learn how to speak with this new found hare lip.
The people responsible for the rescue denied responsibility and refused to apologise for what happened to me. Diablo was taken right back to them the following day…..me with a face full of stitches. This is why I will never foster again. The scar that is left even 3 years on still gives me discomfort. I am conscious of folk staring at my disfigurement. Even my baby niece screams when she sees me…..I think the scar scares her.😢

It's is tough having 5 rescues personally. It takes at least an hour in the morning and everyone is not built for it. When you find a good shelter it is wonderful to serve the buns. It can be so rewarding that I've personally put in 300+ hours in the last few years managing my small business, 2 girls and 5 buns as a single dad. Find that great rescue or shelter and enjoy! Not surprised that there are weirdos out there in the animal stuff. I see it.

My brother and I worked at a boarding facility for dogs and cats while we were in highschool. I was there for about 2 years and my brother for about a year. The amount of emotional distress the owners put on their employees was absolutely appalling. Everyone who worked there obviously had a passion for animals, which was used against us with emotional manipulation. The owners never took part in the manual labor, and often guilted employees to work more than they should have. Money was a priority to them, not the animals or the workers. Many times only 2 employees would be in charge of 100+ dogs. We were understaffed and overworked. The owners would often show up late, drink on the job, or cause problems that shouldn’t have been addressed in the first place. Eventually in one year they lost the majority of their main staff due to the lack of respect and priority. I’m glad we were able to remove ourselves from that situation

Hi Lorelei, I love your videos so much!
I have two bunnies Theo and Milo. When I first got them, I didn't know much about rabbit care. But your videos have helped so much over the past year. I learned a lot and changed what I do. Due to things out of my control (my Dad and brother are allergic to rabbits and we have a dog) I can't properly free roam my bunnies. But I know they can't stay in hutch the whole time. So we met in the middle. Milo and Theo go outside in their generously sized hutch at night and come inside and live in my room in the daytime.
I love your videos! Thank you for teaching me and so many others. Keep up the great work!

I would not volunteer for a rescue as well... I volunteered for a parrot rescue in my area, I fostered for them many parrots between 2021 to mid 2023. Everything went so well until 1/2023 when I was asked if I would take into foster care two parrots who were abandoned in front of the rescue facility. Since they ran out of space at the facility they looked for someone experienced to foster them.
I'm not going to mention these parrots species but they were supposed to be a bonded pair. The rescue labeled them "pluckers" because they were missing whole areas of feathers, mostly neck, chest.
Well apearently the rescue got a report from disease testing along with these parrots and to my surprise NO ONE bother to check the authenticity!
Obviously after 4 months when these birds were in my care I noticed that they're still the same and no visible improvement is happening. Like I fostered a few pluckers before and usually they grew up new feathers after such time. And these two? Nope, still exactly the same.
I really started to suspect that something is really wrong with them. I asked the rescue to repeat testing and do another vet check but they simply said no and that they need time.
So I did testing on my own and surprise surprise those two were positive for PBFD and APV. So I informed the rescue and they immediatelly removed them from my care along with another parrots I was fostering during that time.
I had to buy special equiptment to desinfect my who house, I had to test my own parrots 3 times to make sure that they're healthy.
And the rescue? They even didn't bothered to say sorry we messed it up... I wanted to foster again but they wanted many more unneccessary disease testing every 3 months to prove that my birds are healthy.
Obviously I had to say goodbye. It breaks my heart that I had to abandon the parrots I was fostering because I was not even able to say goodbye to them. Really I hope they're doing well.

I am so sorry you had such a poor experience with a very badly run rescue, - the owner seems like a really unpleasant person - but I do wish you had framed this differently. I don't understand why you state that you know you had a bad experience with a bad rabbit rescue, and are friendly with other, presumably good rescues - but won't ever volunteer for one again. And I worry that the title of this video alone is going to bias some folks who don't get much past the title. (We got our bun from a terrific rabbit rescue four years ago, which I still support.) Just an odd lesson to take from one bad life experience.
