I actually tried playing Sonic 2 with the DK bongos to see how far I could go, and in doing so, realized that the left and right bongos were essentially face buttons, as opposed to being directions on the Control stick or D-pad like I thought they were, so you can't even move in any direction, only jump.

Except he's talking about the Sonic Coins (or Tokens, if you prefer) hidden around the stage, not the rings scattered everywhere.

I’ve never played Sonic R and probably never will because it would be too frustrating to me with the already bad controls. But then you have Nathaniel over here like “Oh boy! Let’s play Sonic R with a ddr pad!” Absolute mad lad over here.

An arcade version where you’d run instead of using a steering wheel, and the save cards would be the last character you played.
I never knew how the running could work, until now.

Imagine if he beats the other Sonic games on the GameCube with only the DDR pad...I will be blessed.
Set your controls up so that you're constantly accelerating and pressing the up arrow actually lets go of accelerate, that way its easier to turn and use other characters abilities.
Then use binds so that pressing the back arrow and a directional button makes you drift so you can actually go around corners.
Also, map the B button to a bind that brakes (both triggers) .
Good enough for a sequel perhaps?

I always felt bad for Sonic R as I'd played it as a kid and was a great game... crippled by being so short, and also probably horribly imbalanced.
I hope someday the idea of a racer with Sonic character AND MECHANICS (not just putting Sonic in Mario Kart) can be revisited and done justice.
