Randy Newman is one of the greatest singer/ songwriters ever and yet only have 2-3 really big Hit singles. That's a crying shame. His 70s albums are filled with gems. Maybe too intelligent for the mainstream!

A most awkward artist. A pop genius, thats for sure. Randy may not have a countless hit singles but his music remain one of the finest ever recorded.
This song was adapted for a commercial for American Federal Bank - Greenville, SC in the 1980’s. “Scooter” was a black sheep who was different from other white sheep banks. Read an article from 2010 that said the ad campaign was successful. Everyone in Greenville was singing that tune!
I had no idea this is where the song came from. And yes everybody from Gville in the 80’s knew this song by heart
@Chuck Dean we were American Federal customers and are still after going thru all the mergers, name changes, etc. Moved to VA in 2012 after living in Greenville for 30 years. Nice to know that people still remember the ad. Thank you for your reply. You had the opportunity to participate in a memorable commercial that people still remember after 30 plus years. Will have to tell my daughter. She had a “Scooter.” Miss Greenville so much. Your reply made my day! Thanks again!
I actually found this when I was looking for the American Federal commercial from when I was a kid. Never knew it was a "real" song till now :),

Millions of people only know Randy through his Toy Story smash hit Youve Got A Friend In Me and its a great song but Randy has a song catalogue which is second to none. My all time favourite singer/ songwriter is Gilbert O'Sullivan and Gilbert and Randy covers the same musical territory in many respects. Both pop craftsmen and they're both still going strong here in 2021!

This song pretty much sums up Randy Newman! Brilliant.
I first heard this song during a HBO during a triple header boxing card from about 1991 which featured Hector 'Macho' Camacho. They played a video of his entertaining and charismatic antics which featured this song. I immediately fell in love with it. It was put together very well and thoroughly entertaining. I love this song.

Randy Newman once quipped that he sounded like a Wounded Buffalo when he sings! He may not have the best vocal chops in the world but his singing is distinctive and uniquely his own.
Indeed. There are plenty of great male frontmen out there who really can't sing well, but they do it in a REALLY unique way, that gives their group a unique sound. Lots of them. Randy's great.

Never saw this lip sync of the track before. funny that they added the two women lip syncing the bg vocals. Its actually Linda Ronstadt and Jennifer Warren singing. I remember recording their vocals in Studio 3 at Sunset Sound around 1983.....

There are many great singers here in 2021 but few have an originality to them that sets them apart from the others. The 60s and 70s had plenty of unique sounding artists, like Gilbert OSullivan and Randy Newman. Dont care what anybody says: Pop music was MUCH better in the 60s and 70s and this is coming from a guy born in 1980.

Heard this song on the Wonder years, Yearbook EP. I really like this song. Only wished he did not have g_d_n in the lyrics. I like the part where the girls sing gosh darn makes the song better.
