I was 14 in 1996. The Spice Girls LITERALLY took over the planet for 2 whole years: every show, every newspaper, every product, everywhere, all day every day 24/7. It was incredible.
There's never been anything like it since. The closest was probably One Direction. But the Spice Girls was far more intense, as it was shorter and faster, nothing can compare.
In the UK they had 9 number 1s, a number 2, and 2 number 1 albums and a number 2 album. Every single they released in the UK sold about 1 million copies EACH. I think they sold 55 million records in 2 years. Insane numbers, when you think Gaga can get a number one now with 50,000 units in the UK.

@@jadebel7006no, the original lyrics of Goodbye was written when Geri was still in the group. But after she left, the other 4 girls re-wrote the lyrics and recorded while they were still doing the Spiceworld Tour 1998 in the USA.
The music video for Too Much was them all playing characters in from a film: Posh Spice was in a Bond filml, Baby Spice was the girl from Poltergeist, Ginger Spice was Rita Hayworth, Scary Spice was Mad Mad Thunderdome, and Sporty was in a Kung Fu film. The other clips were from Spice World the Movie - which you need to see. So bad its good. 90 minutes of them mocking themselves with an all star cast.

I stand corrected, I was going off what I thought when I was 15 - 25 years ago, when there was no Google, not Wikipedia and Internet for 95% of the population.

Mel C was Year of the Dragon (a Kung Fu film)
Mel B was Mad Max (it was the giant car that looks exactly the same as the Aliens vehicle, that made me think Ellen Ripley)
Geri was a Rita Hayworth in Gilda (Geri was obsessed with Marylin and spoke of her all the time, so I just assumed it was her)
VB was Catwoman - apparently (but looked nothing like her at all, and the scene is definitely a Bond scene) so half right.
Emma was Poltergeist

The 80s and 90s were just amazing.
Ginger playing Rita Hayworth (birth name is Cansino) is pretty cool since they’re both half Spanish (Rita’s father was from Southern Spain in Andalucía , Geri’s mom was from Northern/Northeastern Spain in Aragon).
Spice Girls ballads are lit 🔥
"Spice Up Your Life" was their second album's first single, and its music video represents their world domination at the time. They were incredibly popular everywhere (mostly their UK homeland), and everything they touched seemed to turn to gold.
The media constantly reported about 'em every single week, all their singles up until that point (including SUYL) were #1 in the UK, and were successful around the world. Only two months prior they were recording their second album while simultaneously filming their debut movie ( _Spice World: The Movie_ ), both of which later became UK #1's and successful elsewhere. They had what seemed to be endless merchandise, promotion and sponsorship deals, which increased their popularity and in turn they became household names. Everything from television ads for Pepsi, Polaroid, Impulse and Walker Crisps. Launched a new TV channel, an official magazine, a VHS documentary, a toy doll line, a Pepsi sponsored concert in Istanbul, the list goes on.
"Too Much" represents each of the girls as characters inspired from different movies.
Mel B/Scary Spice - _Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome_ (1985)
Emma/Baby Spice - _Poltergeist_ (1982)
Mel C/Sporty Spice - _Year of the Dragon_ (1985)
Geri/Ginger Spice - _Gilda_ (1946)
Victoria/Posh Spice - _Batman Returns_ (1992)
"Goodbye" was written after Geri's departure and is of course written about her.
The album's song version of "2 Become 1" had Geri sing a different verse instead of Victoria's. For the single's release however, it was changed to Victoria's new verse because they felt it alienated the gay community ("Any deal that we endeavor, boys and girls feel good together..."), and because Geri couldn't sing her verse very well.

GOODBYE went to number one in many countries including Canada where it is the longest running number one single of all time!

"Goodbye" has been one of my favorites since it came out and it is touching on Geri's departure.
Geri wrote the original Goodbye with Emma. It was about the children and teacher who died in the Dunblane massacre of 1996.

Mel C who has the "smokey voice" has 25 years of solo material, Northern Star her first album is AMAZING, she's still going. Her last album was last year.
Actually her last album is now almost 2 years old. It was released in 2020.

Did pick up my first edition signed copy today from the bookshop that was running the event thoigh, can't wait to start reading it. From a quick flick through, it's got amazing photos, a lot are unseen.
“Two Become One” is a very good song.
Whereas “Goodbye My Friend” is brilliant.
And “Viva Forever” is their masterpiece. (IMO)

The song Too Much is one of my faves, and has kind of a loaded message from the group. At the time the movie came out (Spice World, which this is from) they hadn't had a day off in almost two years, according to band members. They were at the height of their global dominance and country hopping like crazy. Not long after this song came out, Gerri announced she was leaving and it was like the second break up of the Beattles. It was insane how many people were devastated.
Not long after? "Too Much" was released in December of '97, then "Stop" in March '98, then Geri left the group towards the end of May.
I remember seeing that on MTV NEWS back in the day, whilst watching a rerun of the 1997 MTV VMAs, and I was shocked n pissed about it.
I was truly hoping that 2 Become 1 was going to be in this reaction mix, because it IS and has always been my favorite SG song.
Victoria's line of "once again I'd we endeavour, love will bring us back together" is my favourite line of any spice girls song

This is a cool selection of songs! Spices at their glory. That said, do not miss on their solo careers. Mel C had quite many hits. Especially, during her debut era with Europop smash hit with techno elements "I Turn To You". Geri ("Calling", "It's Raining Men", "Scream If You Wanna go Faster", "Ride It", etc.) and Emma ("What Took You So Long", etc.) had a few hits, too. Mel B and Victoria also releasing a few songs solo. Guess, Victoria has only one most known single "Let Your Head Go". (2000s bop)
The second video: Spice World The movie
Spice World is a 1997 British musical comedy film directed by Bob Spiers and written by Kim Fuller. The film stars pop girl group the Spice Girls, who all play themselves. The film-made in a similar vein to The Beatles' A Hard Day's Night (1964)-depicts a series of fictional events leading up to a major concert at London's Royal Albert Hall, liberally interspersed with dream sequences and flashbacks as well as surreal moments and humorous asides.
I was a kid when the Spice Girls were happening so of course I gravitated to all their upbeat fun songs. But looking back their slower fare was just as impactful as 2 Become 1 was probably my first realization of "Oh, I understand what 'sexy' is now."
There's another British girl group called Eternal!!! They were Destiny's Child before Destiny's. Their first album Always and Forever was huge in 1993 in the UK and Australia and New Zealand. They had 5 singles off their first album - enough for a video like this. They had 4 albums.
There's also All Saints an urban rival to the Spice Girls in 1997. They were great - they're still going.
For 2-3 years, the Spice Girls were the most intense cultural phenomena I’ve ever experienced. It was magical. ❤
I'm so glad these girls were such a huge part of my childhood. Legends! ✌ And gosh, their music has held up extremely well. Love, love, love these girls. Thanks for another great reaction. Please consider doing their three studio albums (especially the first two), I think you'll find plenty to like there. It's amazing what a legacy they've managed to leave with just 2 albums' worth of songs as a 5-piece.
I must confess, I was pretty sick of The Spice Girls when they were big back in the day but looking back now, I can appreciate them more. Maybe you could do a review of some of their solo hits? I loved the one Mel B did with Missy Elliot, and Victoria's song with Dane Bowers should have been no1 but there was a campaign against it. I think I've mentioned the one with Mel C and Bryan Adams before. She also did one with Lisa Left Eye Lopez. Geri didn't collaborate if I recall but I liked her song Mi Chico Latino. She looks amazing in the vid. Just an idea for another episode. By the way, good to see you. I was starting to worry :)

On 2 Become 1, I LOVE how Geri and Emma’s harmonies blend so good together, that lower voice you hear of her it’s so nice. Geri was so good at harmonies. And I love it even more when her voice was front and center at the choruses like Viva Forever, Never Give up on the Good Times, Say You’ll Be There and If You Can’t Dance (which the chorus is just her voice overlaid like 3-4 times in different tones.)

Emma and Mel B’s voices were the prominent ones on Viva Forever, and Emma’s was the one vocal used throughout the entire song (so in a sense, the main lead).
Mel B’s voice is the one you think is Geri’s on IYCD, but she is used on there as well.
Geri’s voice was the weakest of the 5 (I mean, she basically talk-sings). They had to switch out her part for Victoria’s part on “2 Become 1” because she couldn’t sing her part well enough (and because the pronouns she used was exclusionary to the lgbtq community, of which constituted a large bulk of their fanbase).
But this is all moot now since Geri got vocal lessons made her voice better over the years and Mel B’s smoking made her voice the worst in recent years.
My sister owns the red chinese style top that Mel C wore in her solo and fighting scenes in the Too Much music video. It's incredible to see in real life as it is beautiful and iconic but sad in a way too. I think round about this time, with the world tour coming up, Mel really started to get in too deep with the exercise and dieting and her eating disorder was starting to take grip of her. So to see how small the top is is almost physical evidence of the stress and exhaustion they were going through.

Spice girls were HUGE. i mean bigger than The Beatles, Spice girls were more like a Coke or Pepsi. they took over the planet, from US to Pakistan Kenya to Chile.... its hard for ANY girl group to beat them in global dominance
The videos for "Too Much" and Spice World" feels so quintessentially Spice Girls- playing up characters and having fun. And I haven't heard "Goodbye" in such a long time, I'm gonna have to move up to my top 10 Spice Girls tracks. "2 Become 1" and "Too Much" are two of their best tracks for me.

I think that Spice Girls next move should be a 5-woman show on Broadway. Sing all the hits focusing on showing off their vocals because their voices really do sound amazing together.. maybe some dance numbers, but nothing huge production-wise. Lots of chatting, telling stories, and taking questions from the audience.
Victoria 'Posh Spice' Beckham doesn't perform with them anymore.

you can dream all you like but lets be realistic- Victoria has retired from that part of her life now. I wouldn't feel comfortable seeing them live if they weren't all 100% dedicated, committed and comfortable to it which is why I'm glad it was only the other 4 that toured the UK with Spiceworld 2019. Will never understand why some people get so obsessed with Victoria tbh (not saying YOU are obsessed with her but Victoria stans in general are a different breed!)

In too much the group scene was based on their flim ( yes they made their own movie) but the individual scene was based on their favorite movies. Baby spice /blonde/ emma . Was based off of poltergeist. Mel b / scary spice black one was mad max . Melanie c / sporty spice . Husky voice one . Was based off of last dragon. Posh/ Victoria Beckham was playing cat woman in a batman type movie. And Geri/ ginger spice/ red head was based off classic movie I not sure which one. So when you watch it again it makes more sense.
You should dive into solo spice projects and you can find your favorite.
Shout-out to every British kid - or kid of any nation, actually - who can picture exactly what was going on in their lives based on which Spice Girls song was out at the time.

So 2 Become 1 had a lyric change.... it used to say "Boys and Girls go good together" but being the inclusive queens they are, they changed the lyric to "love will bring us back together"

There's a pop group called Steps in the UK. I think you'd love them. The did 97-2001, then 2016-present. Their music is happy as heck, and they do easy dance routines for the fans to follow. They have 7 studio albums and 3 greatest hits.

Spice girls caused many small conflicts in Denmark as well - and many a teen daughter SNEAKED off while trying to appear like them be it at home and/or to school doing their best to behave, sing and dress like them. 10 years old up to ard 14 :-) I guess most schools decided to alter their dresscodes. I had an 11 year one of the kind sample up those years, sigh! Maybe that's why I grew greyhaired at a young age ...
And I am afraid that their appearing with a 25 year distribution may send waves upon new generations depending on content :-)
