What are Chinese Radicals? Why learn them??

If you're learning #Chinese characters, you know something (or maybe a lot!) about radicals -- those parts of the character that are generally used to give you a clue about what the character might be about .... or not!
In this short little video, I talk about three of the most common radicals that appear in a lot of characters -- and from these three, you'll get a glimpse into how radicals can affect a characters meaning, and how the other part of the character can shed light on how to pronounce the character.

The Chinese name for Coca-Cola is an ingenious marketing brand name. Not only is it sort of similar to the sound in English, it can also be loosely translated into “delicious and happy”, which represents the image of the brand.

I appreciate that because sometimes I record but don't post because I think the quality of the video -- usually the lighting haha -- is terrible and makes me look 100 years old or my hair bright orange -- so I end up not posting. But then sometimes I can't help myself because I really find characters and Cantonese so fascinating! I'm so glad you find it useful!! 🤩🤩
Well, there are tons of videos with great video quality (perfect lighting, visual effects and editing etc) however the content, not so. I do understand what you mean and how you feel, however not everyone is looking for the quality of a video but rather the content. I've watched several learning cantonese videos and your channel is definitely one of the most useful ones therefore I click "subscribe". 😂 Keep it up! 👍🏽

I personally love the logosyllabic content. Makes it a lot easier to recognize characters when I understand why it's written that way.
Also knowing what the radical is called is great too! Strange person side! haha
I hope you'll make more pronunciation videos. I learned some Cantonese as a child from people my parents sponsored. I know very little yet want to learn more spoken Cantonese. Thank you 😊

that's actually a great way of doing it, that I learned recently. Just watch Native language instruction in Target language xD. It provides context that you're already familiar with for comprehension aid
I've noticed that radicals sometimes inform how a word should be pronounced. For instance, 可 sounds a little like 口 . Is that just coincidence? Or is it a useful mnemonic?

I couldn't teach my Aussie husband the way like yours .
For example : 可以
I only able to teach him 得 or 得唔得
He always catches the sound of the word . "DUCK "。😅😅

That is soooo funny! Really made me laugh out loud LOL :) It reminds me of when my sister was visiting and at the time we were living in 上碧瑤 (seung bik yiu) and she said she remembered it by thinking "someone bit me" 😂
And I remember when I was first learning, it was so funny to hear people on the phone saying over and over "duck, duck, duck" when agreeing with whoever was talking. I was always waiting for them to say "goose"! LOL 😂

@Cantonese Corner We are going soon this trip , but November may go again . Because the restrictions to visit Nursing homes has been loosen.
as a native cantonese speaker, this "radical" topic, is outright :advance ! indispensible if u need to look up something from a chinese dictionary, IN chinese context, radicals are simply like INDEX, & i have no freaking idea that there R hundreds of radicals LOL
