    (edit) I had an issue where I couldn't see anything on the cards.
    IT'S BECAUSE OF DARK THEME.
    The Dark theme changes some of the display colors, and for me this translated into very clear text on very clear flashcards.
    Turned it back to Light theme, and now I can use the deck no issue.

    • @bianca.phdinprogress
      @bianca.phdinprogress  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for the comment! I’m not sure if that would be an interesting video since I literally just typed down all of the sentences in the textbooks into an excel document, batch imported the pinyin, classified the chapter and card type as a tag, and uploaded them into anki as a CSV file. Then I went in an added all of the audio using the AwesomeTTS add on to every single card. While adding the character and sentence audio, I also double checked that all the imported fields of the card was correct. After all the content of the cards was done, I made the card layout and formatting depending on their focus type!
      Overall it was a really tedious and repetitive process HAHHA. I would not recommend making so many cards in as quick of a time as I did across 4 textbooks XD

I noticed that most of the decks I found for chinese (especially if following a textbook) mostly had vocab cards, not sentence cards. If the card just has a word and definition on it, it’s not the most helpful for long term retention!

    Why did you add these ones if they weren't mentioned in the dialogues?

      I would say, do whatever keeps you learning. if you want to immerse and watch tv shows as a beginner, then go for it! but I would definitely recommend reading and listening at the same time. listening will be one of the harder skills to pick up, so the earlier you familiarize yourself with the tones, the easier it'll be to get better at it!

    Hello Bianca! Thank you so much :) This surely the best HSK deck in the internet! Just a quick question though: did you first work through the chapters (say, HSK 1 chapter 1) and then do the flashcards? Or did you learn directly with the deck? If anyone else is reading this and has tried it, what would you recommend?

    • @MyOrangeString
      @MyOrangeString Před rokem

      From her explanations, she first goes through the chapter in the textbook, then enables the relevant cards for review (she explains how to do it in this clip). She doesn't think Anki is a good tool for learning, only for reviewing learned content.

    • @bianca.phdinprogress
      @bianca.phdinprogress  Před rokem

      @MyOrangeString is correct! I would recommend working through the chapter first and maybe even going through it a few times until you feel fairly comfortable with the characters. Then you can add them to your Anki deck by unsuspending that chapter. If you do it this way, it removes a huge burden off the Anki system where you don't need to learn the words out of context, and can actually recall the word/sentence from the dialogue for easier retention!

    • @bianca.phdinprogress
      @bianca.phdinprogress  Před rokem +1

      the deck is made up of 3 card types that emphasize a particular language skillset. Each card type has the exact same words and sentences, just the orientation on front and back and hints are adjusted. So for an accurate total card number, just divide by 3!

    • @bianca.phdinprogress
      @bianca.phdinprogress  Před 2 lety +1

      it could be! but it would be a bit more challenging to learn without reading. pinyin is available, which is the english romanization (aka chīfàn), so you could just get rid of the chinese characters and focus on just the pinyin and the character/sentence audio!
      the cards go from easier to harder, so as long as you start in the beginning, you'll be able to get really far even with just the audio and the pinyin!!!

    Hey Bianca, I think you attended a language program I worked at as a bilingual assistant. Glad to see you are continuing your language journies. I was wondering if you could give further direction on where to find the correct code to add the hanzi animation on Anki. I went to the site and tried one of the codes, but I think it needs to be adjusted. I see they have a quiz code that lets you draw the character with your finger without an outline. Your help will be greatly appreciated! On a side note, I am currently studying at a Chinese school in China. It has been quite a struggle to keep up with the course but also take the time needed to test out and create effective study habits. My program kind of just totally skipped Hanzi so the Western folks have been on their own. :/ I am trying to switch things up now to catch up. Also ....redoing all of your cards :O I am sure it has helped a lot of people.

    • @bianca.phdinprogress
      @bianca.phdinprogress  Před 2 lety

      Hi robert!!! I got my specific code from the hanzi writer website and didn't do any adjustments to it (just copy pasted into anki). the specific code I used can be found in the cards all the way at the end so you can cross-reference there! if you're trying to use the code that gives you a written quiz, that would be something you should ask the developers of the original code about! what I did for my cards was basically just plug and chug various chunks of code until I got the result I wanted. there may need to be a bit of finagling to get the quiz you want, but all of the code components should be available on the developer's website listed below!
      here's their website explaining the usage of different parts of the code: hanziwriter.org/docs.html
      the code for integrating the quizzes is copy pasted below (formatting may be an issue but its also in the link I shared earlier):
      var writer = HanziWriter.create('character-target-div', '码', {
      width: 150,
      height: 150,
      showCharacter: false,
      padding: 5
      });
      writer.quiz({
      onMistake: function(strokeData) {
      console.log('Oh no! you made a mistake on stroke ' + strokeData.strokeNum);
      console.log("You've made " + strokeData.mistakesOnStroke + " mistakes on this stroke so far");
      console.log("You've made " + strokeData.totalMistakes + " total mistakes on this quiz");
      console.log("There are " + strokeData.strokesRemaining + " strokes remaining in this character");
      },
      onCorrectStroke: function(strokeData) {
      console.log('Yes!!! You got stroke ' + strokeData.strokeNum + ' correct!');
      console.log('You made ' + strokeData.mistakesOnStroke + ' mistakes on this stroke');
      console.log("You've made " + strokeData.totalMistakes + ' total mistakes on this quiz');
      console.log('There are ' + strokeData.strokesRemaining + ' strokes remaining in this character');
      },
      onComplete: function(summaryData) {
      console.log('You did it! You finished drawing ' + summaryData.character);
      console.log('You made ' + summaryData.totalMistakes + ' total mistakes on this quiz');
      }
      });

    So yes you spoke about this in the video. The fact we only get a translation for the vocab and not the full sentence. I’m just having a hard time knowing if I’m right or wrong. Because In the context of the specific words I think it’s saying something but then google/dict says something completely different. So I just wish there was a cheat sheet just to know If I’m right or wrong.

    • @bianca.phdinprogress
      @bianca.phdinprogress  Před 2 lety

      So that’s why studying where the sentences from an anki deck come from is super important. A sentence is great, but sometimes, you need the context of the paragraph or the story it was in to help fill in those gaps.
      For example, if you saw this sentence in an anki deck, it may be a bit confusing:
      “And then I hopped on a train and passed out”.
      You can look up every work and get the gist of what’s happening, but it would be easier to understand it in context of a larger story.
      “I got off work late today and couldn’t wait to go home. I was just so tired! So I walked towards the train station. And then I hopped on a train and passed out. Luckily, I woke up right before my stop!”
      So if you can, learn sentences in context of larger stories. If you do that, when you see that sentence in anki, oftentimes you’ll remember what story it came from and can use those clues to fill in the gaps!!! :)

    I am studing HSK3 for now, and i found this deck is really brilliant for me. i love it. it is lucky to visit your channel. thank you for your great effort. There is one thing that i am struggling with this deck. hope you can help me out. Q1) The stroke order animation does not work for all (listening, reading, writing deck) in my anki, i did not adjust it. Do you have any idea why it does not appear at all? Q2) The new deck appears in sequense starting from listenning deck, which seems to me that reading deck will come after all listenning deck finished. Do you have any idea how to make the deck comes out of tag sequence like listening (2.01), reading (2.01), writing (2.01)?

      I found the answer of Q1. It seems to be relevant to VPN activation. With VPN, the animation works so far. Haha. And I’ve been still trying to figure out what way could be for Q2. I appreciate if you could advise or share about Q2.

    • @bianca.phdinprogress
      @bianca.phdinprogress  Před 2 lety

      Hmm interesting thing about the VPN! Never knew that was an issue. And you can control which cards are displayed by suspending or un suspending cards. They are listed according to level and chapter and separated into the three learning categories. To give people the most flexibility with what type of cards they want to use and at what time, suspending / un suspending cards was then easiest solution.
      So for your learning, what you can do is search the listening tag and un suspend listening 1.01 for example, then go to reading and un suspend the same the same chapter. When you do the deck, now listening 1.01 will appear and reading 1.01 will follow!
      The shortcut for suspending is command+j if I remember correctly! Let me know if you have any other issues :))

      @@dongkunlee9661 The JavaScript that handles the animations looks to be using a URL to access those resources, so my only guess is that the URL is unavailable or blocked somehow from your location without the VPN. That's pure conjecture, though, so I don't really know, but it seems a really niche solution otherwise.

      I just figured it out, and it's sooo SIMPLE.
      for those who want to practice TYPING in chinese with pinyin:
      1 change your keybord language to simplified chinese
      2 click "Browse" on Anki
      3 look for HSK 1-4 deck then choose randomly a card that has "Writing note tag"
      4 click on "Cards..." situated in the middle of "Fields..." and "Preview"
      5 on the front template of the card copy/paste {{type:Sentence}} below {{hint:English Definition}}
