Holy crap... That was absolutely amazing skill.. 👍
Without a doubt, the DC-3 makes the list of the top 10 best aircraft ever designed, built, and flown. I count myself fortunate to have been a passenger in these birds, numerous times,
back in the 1950's and 1960's. Boston to Keene, N.H., and back, and Salt Lake to Elko, and back. Great footage of this beach landing.
The old DC-3 is such a pretty airplane! The geometry is just perfect. It was the first plane I ever flew on, back in 1956. I took a scheduled hop from Carlsbad, N.M. to El Paso, TX. Quite an adventure for a youngster.
4:22 I love that flawless coordination of throttle/prop pitch handling. Nobody even has to talk about it or exchange any look, just straight up focus on the task at the same pace.
THE DC3 is the aircraft that as a transport in WW2 was instrumental on winning that war. Post WW2 then became the main pillar of commercial aviation around the globe. Today in 2020 remains the most reliable, trustworthy aircraft ever built.
All that salt going into the engines? The mechanic would run out of four-letter words while cleaning up that mess.
raboox9 I know I would. 😡
Right. That salt brine will have infiltrated the nacels and the wing structure. It will sit there for years doing its corrosive thing. This was a very unwise and expensive thing to do to this old bird.
I think it was a river beach
No salt water or sand went into those engines at all.
Except for the salt water we could see, Steve.
Well this certainly WAS NOT clickbait!
Bob Sullivan Isn't that refreshing!?

Truly.....
Wow this is freaking amazing! This DC3 looks like brand new! And it is amazing to see modernised (slightly) DC3 cockpit with GNS units. One or my best JustPlanes videos!!!
Love the D C 3 great airplane . My father had one . He also had a Martin 404, steerman, ag wagon , ag cat , piper super cub , a champ and others . He had so many ratings I can't remember them all . I grew up crop dusting . Great memories .
Just one question: WHYTF WERE YOU DOING THIS?!
It's a CV for the Medellín Cartel.
First DAMN thing I thought of when I saw them take off....WTF???
Bush pilots in Alaska taking people in and out of remote locations
They do that all the time in Alaska. Look at a map, see any highways? By water or air, even the 1500 mile road to nowhere never got there
DITTO.......................?????????
Good old DC3!!
These guys are just cruising at 100 ft with a DC-3 like it’s a normal day... lol
They see me rolli'n th.... Ahem. They see me flyi'n they hati'n
That is a normal day for a bush pilot in Alaska.
Jarvis Family Ya in a little bush plane. This is a fuckin beast.
Hey.... a tail dragger's a tail dragger.
Bush hopper or airliner. :-D
Use to do it every day spraying for fire ants
Amazing, the DC-3 is still an awesome work horse after all these decades.
Skill Level 10: Land right next to the camera - on a flooded sandy beach. In the rain. Achievement unlocked.
Perhaps the camera locations were intentional so as to mark out the best landing spot given that has to be easier from the ground. I'm not saying that is the case, it just crossed my mind of interesting possibilities.
@@thomastucker5686 There is no question you are right. Some years ago as a filmmaker I filmed an autoration of a helicopter - the pilot said 'set it up here' and he landed on the same spot three times in a row - engine off!!!! Then we needed to film it from the air - scariest shit I have ever done. Pilot: " So engine off in 3..2..1.." and then he switched the engine off and we glided down and right at the last moment he flared the nose and we gently skidded to a stop. Pilots. Pro as F!
@@nelsonclub7722 sounds scary as F and extremely exciting at the same time!
Spectacular! And I love the view from the camera placed underneath. Good to know that there are still pilots that can bring it down on their own. Was a real pleasure to watch. Also the calmness in the cockpit like it was just like another day at the beach 😂
Don’t pilots usually land at an airport and then it’s up to you to get to the beach?!? “Naw, I’ll just take you directly to the beach.” What service! 😆😂
Best part about general aviation is if we have permission we can land anywhere, as long as you take all precautions.
This is for those situations when your destination has no airports / airstrips. The DC-3 was designed for these "unimproved fields."
@@AMoose454 btw, dc-3 doesn't actually counted as general aviation by the mtow
Great video , We used to land a DC-3 on a island beach called PY-DO in Korea but we had to drive a firetruck up and down the beach to check for sink holes (wrecked a firetruck while I was there) also tried not to run through water hard on the props.
One of the best landing videos I ever saw!! Fantastic the multi-camera and the landing on the flooded beach was just amazing!!!
Is the DC-3 the most fantastic airplane or what? For something that old flying that perfect with a fantastic pilot and co-pilot, you know that you will get to your destination safely. The GoPro is also one hell-of-a camera system. They design and build tanks! Great video and tell the crew great job!
Wow,,, what a landing. This just shows the confidence of not only the pilot(s), but the DC-3 too! That's why they were able to do that! Execellent team! Man and bird flying together!
It's amazing to see these planes that are getting on a bit now still doing the flying they were designed for. A truly amazing aircraft.
I wish I had been on board, it looks an exciting trip. Only question I have is why they were landing on a beach in the first place? I can only think that they were running a supply run to the Lodge that was mentioned? Anyway, well done that pilot, an very gentle touch down, he has done it before, but how things will change with a bit of water around. Nice video, I would have loved to have seen it touch down on the day.
I know that the word Amazing is over-used, but this is bloody amazing!!
I'm glad you thought to, thank you!
Absolutely agree
Haha. "Will we make it in there? Oh yeah"
This pilot is cool as a cucumber and gentle as a feather with that beautiful old bird. I really enjoyed this video and super glad you didn't ruin it with background music like so many others do. Those engines sound magnificent. That camera mount under the aircraft is legend too. How did that ever stay on?
I'm guessing the camera was installed by one hell of a mod team!
Beautiful goonie, Great timeless design. The pilots doing some great flying.
Real "seat of your pants flying" no glass cockpit, no flight management computer. Fun to watch👍
How did you miss the glass displays lol
Wow what a thrill to fly along on the DC-3!!! What a great piece of aviation history! Thank you for letting us ride jumpseat on this journey and adventure! All the best from the west coast of Florida USA!!!
You are very welcome and thanks for watching!
It’s nice to see such a tiny company last this long. And a very nice video from all angles. Awesome job!
My my, is it real.
Simply Awesome.
What cruising at 100 feet, hovering just before landing.
Calm and cool piloting.
Wow, this is some amazing footage, Thanks for sharing!

Sleek! You have to love how these indestructible old schoolers handle themselves after so many years of impecable service!
Very true. Glad you liked it!
Well, that was different. But after living in Alaska for over 40 years nothing involving airplanes would surprise me. I've seen some pretty unique "water landings", with wheels.
Amazing, plus the short take of run with no flaps. Simply amazing
Take-off was done with 1/4 flap. When the landing gear is in transit you see the flaps being retracted.
Great job by the captain and copilot!!!Love the video!
Thanks glad you enjoyed the video!
@@justplanes : i can''t wait for the tommorow premiere!
Great video, not sure the engines, gear and airframe will appreciate the sand and salt water though!
WOW absolutely awesome!!
Love it. Total control. The pilot makes braking an art form. Wonderful airplane, too.
water did most of the braking. holding the nose up and stable was the finesse factor. awesome!
One of the many things to love about Alaska is seeing all the old aircraft still doing what they do best.
I would add to your description that this is an DC-3S , R4D-8, C-117D and not a DC-3. In the civilian world this is a different FAA type rating than the DC-3. Only 100 were remanufactured down the line at Long Beach in the 1950's for the USN/USMC. Different engines, different wing, double the fuel capacity, different tail, metal control surfaces, gear doors, higher gross weight, retractable tail wheel. Check the FAA registry database, very few still fly. N9796N in Honolulu is one.
DBBRV60 that’s a great addition indeed and very interesting. Thank you
I did notice two things, I thought odd. First was that the mains retracted and had doors to open and close. Last was a significantly different vertical stabilizer. It seemed taller and it was squared off on top. I've never seen one in real life. Thank you for your comment and bringing it to our attention. :-)
Super Gooney!
I flew C-117Ds for the last couple of years of their service in the USMC back in 1976-1978. Great airplane that I'm glad this fighter pilot had the opportunity to fly.
I led the flight of our Squadron's two "Hummers" to the boneyard (DM AFB) in October 1978 when the USMC/USN program was ended. BuNo 17420 that I flew that mission had over 78,000 hours since it was remanufactured by Douglas in 1950 when we dropped her off at DM. After being sold as surplus it continued to fly in civilian service for many years out of south Florida.
@@g550ted5 What fighter did you forgo to fly the Super DC-3?
thankX
That is insanely perfect!
Great video!!! Always can expect great content from you guys!
You're really kind, thank you VERY much!!
I dont know why, but i really like the DC-3 Cockpit, the old-school controls are amazing! Great vid!
That cockpit is really tricked-out! I've always loved the look of the airframe.
Judging by the presence of gear doors this seems to be a Super DC-3/C-117? If so, it has more powerful engines and a plug inserted between the cockpit and the wings, lengthening the fuselage and correcting the centre of gravity for the heavier engines. It would also have an extra passenger window on each side (8 instead of 7 on the standard DC-3)
Thats very interesting, thanks for the explanation!
Well done gentlemen, I'll be happy to watch you pros do this stuff from my warm and dry household!
I’ve only been in a DC-3 once. Loved it!
God level stick and rudder skill. Too much rate of descent the plane would ended up upside down. Thumbs up to both pilots and JP for making this awesome video available
The venerable DC3! Fantastic!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks
Exceptional plane in the hands of a skilled pilot....great to watch.
Very smooth operator, true bush pilot. This dude has got it togeather.
I could comment, A LOT, on your skills...but I’ll just say you are AMAZING!!!
What a pilot. I've had rougher landings on a perfect day in Miami. Bravo
WOW! Beautiful in every aspect!!
Douglas DC-3, one of (if not the) best aircraft ever made. They produced a ton of them and many are still flying all over the world today. It just works!!
Such excellent piloting. Thanks for the post
Our pleasure, thanks for watching!
Wow just wow, whole time was just expecting it to dig in & flip or etc. Amazing landing.
Truely AWESOME video. Thank you for sharing this with us.
In the early 80s, I worked for Adrian Dalsey (the "D" of DHL) in their first airline adventure called DHL Air Cargo in the Hawaiian Islands. We were the premier inter-island air carrier for cargo between Honolulu and the neighbor islands with a fleet of two DC-3s and five DC-6 aircraft. What a joy it was to fly in these old - no "timeless" - air machines that did their jobs day-in and day-out. You can still find these planes flying in various operations around the world!
Cool. What a beautiful aircraft. That pilot knows his machine.
Bravo!! Amazing landing and plane. Great job.
looking forward to watch that
Yes! Will be something you probably have never seen ;)
Impressive flying and landing. Like a BOSS!
What touch, beautiful to me.. I've been in one dc3, "Mr. Douglas" (hull # 2 or 3 I heard!).. never landed in it though, only take-offs👍. Badass
Amazing video mate... crazy skills imagine if they landed to early and there was a massive ditch.. keep up the good work 👍🏻😃
Wow, When I saw this in my recommendations I thought it was a forced landing. Amazing flying skills, and kudos to the DC-3 for being tough enough to do that.
Me too. I imagined a controlled crash.
Just my opinion. I’ve watched several of your videos and I prefer them without the music. I enjoy hearing the conversation in the cockpit and with ATC. Great videos.
Can you imagine the Corrosion Factor on that fuselage???... OMG
Like any plane that flys over the ocean..
It's called using a water hose.. we wash our trucks ,boats ,and trailers after salt water or sand for same reason
Anodized aluminum is what plane is made out of
Plus how do you know his landing is in salt water not fresh water

Totally! Glad you enjoyed this different video!
A truly good landing. He floated it down inch by inch to a controlled touchdown. Of course, having a tail dragger always helps on difficult fields. (Double I)
The tail on that aircraft indicates it was probably a former USN R4D. Great video guys!
I'm not 100% sure but I bet you are right and glad you enjoyed the video Dan! Thanks
This could be one of the most amazing landing I've ever saw. I would definitely be worried about a nose over because of all that resistance on the main gear. I guess you would want to keep that tail much lower then usual. Amazing Job, legendary plane!!!!
That was incredible. Watching from inside the cockpit I kept waiting for him to touchdown expecting this huge shake. When the outside stopped moving I thought there was something wrong with the video.
That pilot is bonafide! Sweet landing and rotation...That'll give your sphincter muscles a workout!
Hi JP.....this video was really AMAZING!
Many thanks again.....have a nice weekend :-)
Greetings Betsy.
Hello Betsy, thank you and glad you liked it. You have a lovely weekend as well!
Pretty ballsy. Excellent piloting, and great footage.

What a fantastic aircraft, and what fantastic judgment for a fantastic landing! Did I mention that this was just fantastic?

Just awesome wow that's great flying done how it should be done 🇬🇧🇨🇦🇺🇸🕊️
Good video. Excellent Just Planes.
Landing is salt water will not do that old girl any good.
Landing on short dirt strips is is the forte of those things, even on skis or floats but salt water beaches?
I guess flying through all that falling wet stuff would rinse most, if not all, off it...
Brackish water. Not that it's any better but the salinity of that water there is low.
@Semper Fi Not True.
It is hanger misted every week with ZML.
You can read it on the frame log

What an epic landing!!!!
That was incredible !!
What an amazing airplane and amazing pilots. Talk about knowing your plane's limitations.
Ex-USN R4D (the vertical stabilizer gives it away).
That’s really cool did not know you could land that big plane on the beach. WOW
