The Battle of Edessa took place between the armies of the Roman Empire under the command of Emperor Valerian and Sasanian forces under Shahanshah (King of the Kings) Shapur I in 260. The Roman army was defeated and captured in its entirety by the Iranian forces; for the first time, a Roman emperor was taken prisoner. As such, the battle is generally viewed as one of the worst disasters in military history.

But the most important point is that they were Iranian ppl and they were the ones who defeated the Seleucids. 📚📚the book of : "the Persians seen by the Greeks under the direction of Dominique lanfant", french version : "Les Perses vus par les Grecs"👇🏻👇🏻
Chapter 14-8. People around Alexander reacted to the acceptance of Iranian customs. Cleitus and Flattery: One evening of drinking, Cleitus decries the flatterers' complacency towards Alexander and allows himself to belittle his military prowess. Alexander, mad with anger, kills him. Callisthenes' opposition to proskynesis: Alexander wants the Iranian custom of proskynesis (movement of homage) to be adopted for him. Convinced that his father is Amon and not Philip, he considers himself worthy of this divine distinction. If some of the Greeks around him granted it out of flattery, Callisthenes, a former student of Aristotle, considered it a disgrace and, like most Macedonians, refused it.
Alexander has Bessus's nose and ears cut off, then orders his execution in Ecbatana before the assembly of the Medes and Persians. For the first time, Arrian passes a critical judgment on Alexander, citing his adoption of barbaric customs-indulgence in luxury, abandonment of Macedonian attire for Median clothing and the "Persian tiara of the conquered," despotic authority, and a lack of self-control, especially in regards to alcohol. Arrian doesn't specify when Alexander started adopting Persian customs but, like other authors, sees the halt in Hyrcania as a turning point, where Alexander feels he has successfully achieved his goal and firmly holds the empire.
      - ch. 8-14. Alexander's entourage reacted to the adoption of customs
Persians---Arrian includes these later episodes about Cleitus and Callisthenes because they are related to the theme of adopting Persian customs. Cleitus and flattery: During a drunken night, Cleitus criticizes the flattery towards Alexander and belittles his military achievements. Enraged, Alexander kills him. Callisthenes' opposition to proskynesis: Alexander wants to be honored with the Persian custom of proskynesis (a gesture of homage). Believing his father is Ammon, not Philip, he considers himself worthy of this divine distinction.

The first time I ever heard of this battle was actually from an art history class. We were in a period covering Persia in the classical period. There's statues, reliefs from Persia celebrating this victory. I remember them because it showed the Romans submitting in defeat to the victorious Sasanian ruler.
Anyways, the two empires would go back and forth for centuries fighting each other to the point of exhaustion. This allowed the Muslim conquests to be a possibility because Rome and Persia had beaten each other to a bloody pulp.

Yeah there are rock reliefs across Iran showcasing some of the Sassanian history and in particular the victory of Edessa portraying the shah on horse back, Philip the Arab kneeling in front of him and emperor Valerian standing in gesture , it's located in the province of Fars(Basically Persis from the ancient times), relatively close to Persepolis. It's also very interesting to see how many of the ancient city names from the Sassanian era have remained exactly the same throughout all the centuries with minimal changes. I also read somewhere that the very bridge the romans built in Iran is still standing to this date but unfortunately with the current regime in power, the least thing they care about is Iran itself...

The heavy cavalry/cataphrats were the main forces of melee in the Sasanian army. Persian heavy cavalry of Sasanian era was called Shahswaran, meaning king cavalry, they were the first units in history with complete armour protection and their main weapon was in fact lances and mace, the very first version of knights, just as they are described on Shiraz historical sites and kermanshah mountain carvings. I even heard that the old Arabic word for knight, _Faris_ is same as the Arabic word for Persians.

As in almost all cinematic depictions of ancient field battles, the two opposing armies, heavily armed and in full armor, run towards each other from several hundred meters. This is physically impossible, the soldiers would have been so exhausted from the heavy load after this run that they would no longer have been able to fight. Instead, the armies advanced slowly towards each other until they collided.

@@user-cg2tw8pw7j As I told you before, the Huns tried to attack the Sassanids but there isn't much said about an invasion of Huns
Only that a Hunnic army was defeated in Armenia (as I told you before) but they were probably a raiding party and were there to scout the area
The Shahanshah of the Sassanid empire at the time of Attila was Yazdegerd II not Khosrow
And no the central Asian Huns were not allies of the Sassanids ever since Shapur II the great
      Not always
The script writer of the battle of Edessa video in Historymarche channel said that he has sources that the first Sassanid king, Ardeshir I, met a Hunnic king during his campaigns in central Asia and defeated the Hunnic king in battle
Shapur II fought and defeated them and in the end they were made to serve in the Sassanid army in their battles with Rome
In 395 AD, Basiq and Kursich led two detachments down the Euphrates, threatening the capital Ctesiphon
Upon hearing that, the Sasanian army marched against them and the Huns retreated after taking some casualties
One group however, was overtaken and completely defeated (though it seems the commander survived)
The Sasanians took nearly all of the booty, and freed 18,000 captives
The other group of Huns retreated through the Derbent Pass
During the reign of Bahram V (who is called Bahram Gur because of his obsession with hunting onagers), while Bahram was occupied with the war with the Romans, his eastern neighbours, Kidarites, crossed the Oxus river and invaded the Sasanian realm, conquering the rich city of Marw/Merv and even reaching as far as westwards as Ray
Bahram was thus forced to pay tribute to the Kidarites, in order to stop their incursions into his empire
However, Bahram passed through the mountain chain on the southern shore of the Caspian sea, eventually reaching Merv
There, his forces routed the Kidarites in a battle, killing their king in the process and capturing his wife, the queen of the Kidarites
A general of Bahram pursued the Kidarites into Transoxiana and inflicted another defeat on them
The war was concluded in 427, with Bahram cementing his name as a great champion of Iran
The name of Bahram was long remembered amongst the people of the surrounding area
The Sogdian city of Bukhara would later mint coins with his image
In 450, Yazdegerd II launched an expedition into deep Kidarite territory in Central Asia, raiding and capturing forts and cities, which resulted in the accumulation of many captives and riches and managed to secure the eastern portion of his empire against the Kidarite incursions
One of Yazdegerd's general was defeated by the Kidarites but the Kidarites were finally completely defeated by a Sassanid Hephthalite alliance but the Sassanids and Hephthalites became enemies and then the Sassanid king, Peroz I was defeated 3 times and killed in the end and most of eastern Sassanid provinces were conquered by Hephthalites
However, the Hephthalites were stopped and heavily defeated by an Iranian noble called Sukhra of the house of Karen and but since most of the Sassanid army was lost during those 3 battles, they weren't able to take back the lost territories
But they took back the treasury of the king, all the plunders, Peroz daughter and the main priest of the king
Kavad I was able to take back the great Khorasan from them after defeating them, a large part of the lost territories
His son Khosrow Anushiravan finally defeated the Hephthalites and took back all the previous Sassanid provinces by an alliance with the Gokturks and conquered the southern half of the Hephthalite kingdom
Years later 3 Perso Turkic wars happened :
      Perso-Turkic war of 588-589
Perso Turkic war of 606/607-608 (some say it was in 619)
Perso Turkic war of 627-629 (can't even be called a war though)
The first and second, which were the most important ones, were won by the Sassanids
In the last one wasn't fought in Central Asia but in the Caucasus in the middle of the last Byzantine Sassanid war
Gokturks invaded two Sassanid forts while the Sassanids were busy fighting Romans
An army of 30,000 Gokturks defeated 10,000 Sassanid soldiers sent by Shahrbaraz and raided few territories but they went back to the steppes out of fear of a Sassanid retaliation

the rivalry between the persian dynasties and the greco-roman world has to be one of the most if not the most epic in history. it was a tremendous clash of forces that lasted for a thousand years since Darius to Heraclius. Both sides had spectacular victories and defeats on the battle field, but in the end nobody won as the Caliphate would sweep both empires. A thousand years of war for nothing, it boggles the mind how incredibly glorious and stupid is human history.

The speaker should educate himself a little and not be bias! The Sassanids was a dynasty of IRAN (Persia) and was not a middle eastern empire only but it was a world empire! Basically there were only two major world empires in this world during the Romans era, one was Persia and the other was Rome!

Awesome cinematics, but the Roman army of this period would have used long spears to repel cavalry attacks and their heavy infantry of the legions would have made mincemeat of the Sassanid infantry if it attacked directly like shown here. The archery battle should have gone on much longer with the Romans losing men the whole time. Against Crassus, the Parthians had won by bringing up camel trains with loads of thousands of extra arrows, so they never ran out of ammunition. We don't know exactly what happened at Edessa, but probably Valerian got lured out into the open and shot to pieces by horse archers just like Crassus, following which the Sassanid Cataphracts crushed them. The Romans seem to have had too few archers and inferior cavalry for a battle in such open terrain favoring a mobile enemy.

    • @Los3parceros
      @Los3parceros Před 5 měsíci

In the direct confrontation there was no battle between Romans and Persians. Whenever the Romans managed to engage the Persians in a pitched battle, the battle became a massacre of the Persians. The only way the Persians could win was to avoid a head-on clash, using guerrilla techniques and shooting arrows from afar.

    • @cugelchannel4733
      @cugelchannel4733 Před 5 měsíci

@@Los3parceros Except that the terrain of Iraq is wide open waterless, treeless steppe with small folds that can conceal cavalry bands. In short, it was terrain that totally favored cavalry. Heavy infantry could march for weeks without seeing anything. Then be suddenly ambushed by hidden enemies that just appeared from what looked an empty landscape, and then disappeared again. The Persians didn't have to fight pitched infantry battles in the Roman style and had few cities to defend. The Romans took Ctesiphon numerous times, but that never translated into real control over the Empire as a whole. That especially was apparent when Trajan conquered all the way to Persian Gulf, but immediately rebellions sprung up all over the place and overwhelmed his garrisons. In the midst of this he died and his successor, Hadrian, realizing the impossibility of holding all of Trajan's conquests relinquished nearly all of them.
