The Battle of Alesia or Siege of Alesia (September 52 BC) was a military engagement in the Gallic Wars around the Gallic oppidum (fortified settlement) of Alesia in modern France, a major centre of the Mandubii tribe. It was fought by the Roman army of Julius Caesar against a confederation of Gallic tribes united under the leadership of Vercingetorix of the Arverni. It was the last major engagement between Gaul's and Romans, and is considered one of Caesar's greatest military achievements and a classic example of siege warfare and investment; the Roman army built dual lines of fortifications-an inner wall to keep the besieged Gaul's in, and an outer wall to keep the Gallic relief force out.
00:00 - Introduction to the battle
01:50 - Gallic skirmishers and Roman/Germanics cavalry clash
02:40 - Full Gallic army advances on the Romans
04:37 - The Fortifications are breached (Brutal hand to hand combat)
    05:22 - Gallic reinforcements arrive
09:18 - Vercingetorix attacks the Inner fortifications, Surrounding the Roman's
12:03 - Caesars last ditch effort to save the battle and his army
13:32 - Battle report and End Credits

When I was eight years old? The first comic book I remembered was 'Asterix'. (The scene where they drink magic soup and scold the Roman army or throw huge bricks and obelisk!)
How did Caesar beat 80000+250,000 Gauls who were as fierce as a wild bear, a donut-shaped siege?
The book says that the role of the Roman army's fences and traps was great, and I think Caesar's encouragement and the Roman people's iron patriotism and combat experience are important.
I understand what Sulla said about Caesar, "There are a lot of Marius in him."
Thank you for the wonderful history video!!!

The point about the Gauls breaking when they were close to victory is an interesting thing, because so many accounts of ancient and medieval battles show that morale was fragile. Very few cases of battles where the losing side was annihilated right there on the battlefield, going down fighting. Usually there's a shattering of morale and the army routs. Usually the heavy casualties are because of the losing army being run down as they try to flee, all cohesion lost.

As far as I can recall Caesar wrote nothing about a Gaul break-through of the Roman fortifications anywhere. But he mentioned that when the support army attacked, then the besieged warriors attacked from the inside to help their comrades. In the final phase of the combat Caesar described a pincer attack on the Gauls which had been surrounded while figting in front of them. Suddenly and surprisingly they experienced Roman forces in their rear. In this moment the Gaul army collapsed and disintegrated, and many were slain while trying to leave the battleground. On seeing this from his high position, Vercingetorix called his inner troops back to Alesia. Then he sent message to Caesar and offered surrender. Most of the captured Gaul warriors were enslaved and given to Caesars soldiers as a reward for their service.

Incredible animation but you need to check your pronuncations before producing these videos. Note that Roman soldiers were legionaries (pro."leeg-eeon-aRR-EES"), not legionnaires (pro. "legion-AIRS") who are French colonial period to the present day soldiers. Germany was caled Germania (pro. Ger- marn-ee-ah) not Jer-marn-ee-ah.The Roman primary weapons were the heavy and light Pila (Pro. pee-lar), the larger shield in Caesar's day was the scutum (pro. scoo-tum), which you very correctly depict as elliptical and curved. Also the Romans used ditches of sharpened stakes just ouside the circumvalation walls, and caltrop-like spikes in the ground to deter cavalry assaults. Nevertheless fantastic scenes and a marvellous effort!

Romans was very lucky, even do they are superior here on everything but they still should not win this fight, against 250.000 and breaches everywhere. They must had gathered all the men everywhere.

Se fosse romano teria vencido e porque? Porque Romano estudava mais as derrotas do que vitórias. Perdeu? E cavalaria atacando a retaguarda? Nossa, isso parece filme de oliude. Barbaridade!
