In this step-by-step video, you’ll learn how to tile a bathroom floor. From measuring and marking out the floor, evenly spacing your tiles and ensuring they’re symmetrical right through to grouting and applying sealant, we’ve broken down each stage of the process so it’s easy to digest. Follow these instructions and you’ll end up with a tiled floor that’s water-tight, level and looks great.
    Preparation & planning
If you have a concrete floor, you can tile directly onto it. Timber floors needs to be strengthened with exterior-grade plywood which has been primed before tiling can begin. Tiles always need to be laid onto clean, dry and level surfaces, therefore sand and clean as necessary in both cases. Check whether your tiles need sealing, too.
    Aftercare
After finishing your tiling project, use a grout protector spray to stop penetration by water, dirt, oil, grease and lime scale. Using this product will help to prolong the life of your grout and keep the area easy to clean.
Getting the job done - hints & tips
Make sure all surfaces are prepared before tiling. Porous surfaces should be prepared with primer before tiling. Always make sure your grout and adhesive is in date if you're using product which has been left over from another project.
    Safety
Before screwing battens into the floor, always check for pipes and wires which may be under the floor. If there are pipes or wires under the floor where you are intending to screw down battens, use pencil lines to guide your tiling.

Thank you! I've been looking for a method of shaping tiles around my toilet so I can redo my bathroom floor and most tutorials just discuss shaping around the flange, but I'm not removing my toilet for this project because I'm doing vinyl tiles over the preexisting ceramic ones, so none of them were that helpful! This method is so clever, I feel so silly I'd never have thought it up myself.

I've got one tip to add. When using the notched spreader, make sure to make the lines in one direction, instead of swirling as it is done here. The way it is done here, air will get trapped in areas in the middle. This can later on cause the tiles to loosen. When the lines created by the spreader all go in one direction, air can escape from the middle all the way out to the sides as you press the tile down, and this helps the tile stay in place in the future.

Using a toothed spreader you should spread the adhesive to form straight lines. Waving it round randomly like an artex pattern forms sealed channels of air underneath the tile. Straight channels allow air to escape from underneath the tile making it much easier to level. There is a video on here of a guy laying glass tiles to illustrate this.

I have noticed many techniques that I have learned through youtube that they are not best practice:
    - mortar or adhesive should be troweled in straight lines so as to allow air to escape.
    - tiles should be pushed back and forth so as to collapse the ridges made by the trowel achieving a better bond.
    - using plastic silicone profilers is better than using tape.

I use the York store and have always found it to be a pleasant experience. They always have the stock I need and I find the Wickes own-branded tools to be of good quality and durable. The staff have always been helpful and approachable.
Sadly I have found out this week that the senior management of this company hates its customers, considers us bigots and would rather us not buy from their stores. They have tried some furious backpedaling by saying that the remarks of their Chief Operations Officer Fraser Longden were taken “out of context”.
Don’t you dare try to gaslight us with your weasel words. We know exactly what low opinion you have of us as your customers. All Fraser Longden did was say the quiet part out loud. We have received your message and will now act (by taking our custom elsewhere) accordingly.

I was using sarcasm about the ceiling tiles. Yes I know most homes in the west have wood floors. In the states it's plywood. That said, WE ALWAYS TILE UNDER THE TOILET TO THE PIPE. The mounting flange goes OVER the tile. . However, we also put a 3/4 " wire reinforced mortar bed down first. You never tile directly to wood, NEVER. I also know its a product promo but its wrong and should be ridiculed.

@@underpantswedgy the floor is going to fail because the prep isn't done correctly. For example, you don't tile directly plywood especially in a bathroom, it must be screeded making sure the floor goes towards the floor waste. He was using the wrong size notch (too small) so the tiles don't have that much coverage. He isn't using a flexible glue since the floor will move and the tiles will pop off. The lay out of the tiles is wrong. You don't cut around a toilet. You remove it and install it after the floor is tiled. The floor isn't waterproofed (depending on the circumstances) almost everything explained in the video is wrong. it may look pretty but he took all the wrong steps and alas it will fail. I'm a qualified tiler so I know what I'm talking about

Luke Chapman I believe you against this video and the troweled adhesive line must be straight to allow the air to escape to get full coverage on the tile to bed
