In this step-by-step video, you’ll learn how to tile a bathroom floor. From measuring and marking out the floor, evenly spacing your tiles and ensuring they’re symmetrical right through to grouting and applying sealant, we’ve broken down each stage of the process so it’s easy to digest. Follow these instructions and you’ll end up with a tiled floor that’s water-tight, level and looks great.
Preparation & planning
If you have a concrete floor, you can tile directly onto it. Timber floors needs to be strengthened with exterior-grade plywood which has been primed before tiling can begin. Tiles always need to be laid onto clean, dry and level surfaces, therefore sand and clean as necessary in both cases. Check whether your tiles need sealing, too.
Aftercare
After finishing your tiling project, use a grout protector spray to stop penetration by water, dirt, oil, grease and lime scale. Using this product will help to prolong the life of your grout and keep the area easy to clean.
Getting the job done - hints & tips
Make sure all surfaces are prepared before tiling. Porous surfaces should be prepared with primer before tiling. Always make sure your grout and adhesive is in date if you're using product which has been left over from another project.
Safety
Before screwing battens into the floor, always check for pipes and wires which may be under the floor. If there are pipes or wires under the floor where you are intending to screw down battens, use pencil lines to guide your tiling.

Funny how a lot of the pros and know it alls are on here watching a video titled "How to Tile a Bathroom Floor with Wickes
". This kind of job would be sufficient for any DIYer. So instead of being arm chair critics, you are more than welcome to post a video yourself on how it should be done correctly.
Sounds like I BetterCall Saul…. Its all good man!!! Im a 40 yr pro and all these methods are antiquated, and i have NO time to educate DYI-errs
@@mandatethis8024 you got time to be on CZcams though huh?

Well I just came here searching for my son in Texas to do his tile job at his house. I learned a different way but this is okay video for a beginner
This is the most simple explained video I’ve seen on laying tiles. This is all beginners are asking for. They don’t need people showing off on how well they lay tile. Well done!
I've been tiling professionally for 15 years. I could cry watching this! Tears of laughter mixed with pain, embarrassment, awkwardness, horror, disbelief and grief!
Imperial Tiling Mark you haven't told us why ,
@@brianfield792 Never put tiles directly on wooden surfaces, no waterproofing, there should be tiles underneath the toilet also and under the bathtub.
@@rikardnilsson2413 not the tub but all else see a plumber
I saw this and had to check calendar to make sure its not April 1st.
@@rikardnilsson2413 They say the floor should be primed?
THANK YOU THANKYOU......finally a tutorial that is not sped up 100 times that you cannot see how to do this. Very appreciative of your detailed and informative explanation.
This is the funniest thing I have seen in ages.
You have a promising career ahead in comedy producing video like this.
People haven't laid tiles raw onto a timber substrate since the 80s....
Thank you! I've been looking for a method of shaping tiles around my toilet so I can redo my bathroom floor and most tutorials just discuss shaping around the flange, but I'm not removing my toilet for this project because I'm doing vinyl tiles over the preexisting ceramic ones, so none of them were that helpful! This method is so clever, I feel so silly I'd never have thought it up myself.
I've got one tip to add. When using the notched spreader, make sure to make the lines in one direction, instead of swirling as it is done here. The way it is done here, air will get trapped in areas in the middle. This can later on cause the tiles to loosen. When the lines created by the spreader all go in one direction, air can escape from the middle all the way out to the sides as you press the tile down, and this helps the tile stay in place in the future.
Love the video....I learn 1 step at the time....easy to understand...
From experience I'd never lay tiles on plywood floor, even with primer. It's susceptible to movement in the future causing the grout to crack and lift. It's best to use a fibre cement board like hardie backer.
No have first quality thin set lay on Plywood is ok
A big Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge of tiling for free to anyone.
Just checked my calendar I though it was April 1 st ?? Shocking !!!
Some great methods shown here! Thank You!
Good evening to you every encouragement to master the work. I am a citizen of the country of Algeria, I follow and witness your channel every success, although I specialize in the field of construction

Hello guys after watching many videos tutorials, Your is the worst ever! No clear, adhesive wrong
Spreading, paper temple is for kids, screw long wood for level is for kids, thanks for the generosity FOR WASTING TIME.
@@Lu-cho but if you know how to do it why are you here?
Thanks for sharing the knowledge. Wish you all the best in your life.
Using a toothed spreader you should spread the adhesive to form straight lines. Waving it round randomly like an artex pattern forms sealed channels of air underneath the tile. Straight channels allow air to escape from underneath the tile making it much easier to level. There is a video on here of a guy laying glass tiles to illustrate this.
R W I’ve seen that video,,and it’s spot on,
But wouldn't that allow room for water to get in and spread?
@@aron2015 if it gets through your grout you are knackered anyway

neat clean work
I have noticed many techniques that I have learned through youtube that they are not best practice:
- mortar or adhesive should be troweled in straight lines so as to allow air to escape.
- tiles should be pushed back and forth so as to collapse the ridges made by the trowel achieving a better bond.
- using plastic silicone profilers is better than using tape.
Thank you for the knowledge 🤛
I’m glad there are videos out there like this, it keeps me in work...if people found out that this is the absolute hardest way to go about laying a small bathroom and thus a huge waste of time, I’d be out of a job, lol. Not saying it’s the wrong way, just the long way
Was thinking the same.....LOL

7.00 do not use felt tip pen as ink can sink into tile I watch this video when I want a laugh video is wrong in so many different ways
I use the York store and have always found it to be a pleasant experience. They always have the stock I need and I find the Wickes own-branded tools to be of good quality and durable. The staff have always been helpful and approachable.
Sadly I have found out this week that the senior management of this company hates its customers, considers us bigots and would rather us not buy from their stores. They have tried some furious backpedaling by saying that the remarks of their Chief Operations Officer Fraser Longden were taken “out of context”.
Don’t you dare try to gaslight us with your weasel words. We know exactly what low opinion you have of us as your customers. All Fraser Longden did was say the quiet part out loud. We have received your message and will now act (by taking our custom elsewhere) accordingly.
Thank you very much
Very good video 👏
very helpful
Good video..nothing wrong with doing things this way. Some would say it’s the slow way but it is nice and neat and that is what matters 👍
They do things way too quickly these days and the quality suffers. It's the same when you go to the doctors. Quantity over quality. Greedy.
Great job.
well done
Brilliant, thanks.
great job thanks alot
Wow paper templates is genius..... I don’t why I didn’t think of this when I’m a installer myself 🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽

I am about to tile my bathroom floor & walls I shall be referring to this video many times no doubt, I buy all my DIY Products from my local Dunstable Store, I know the Staff and their a Great Team!
you better not refer to much to this video or your tile will fail if you a wood subfloor you must put down durock or an uncoupling membrane or the tile will come up
Excellent tips on here thanks
Glad you're finding the videos helpful, Shaun. Thanks for your feedback. Kirsty
do you not need to leave a gap on the wal side for any expansion or movement
? Maybe, but the silicone sealant is flexible so that might cover it.

Not sure if anyone noticed, but although there was plenty of people saying don't tile around the toilet, the tiles actually change from 9:50 to 11:24. The grout line was in the centre of the toilet, then it was down the left hand side??
Nice
always spread you adhesive you straight line this prevents air pockets which can cause tiles to crack!
Thank you. This helps!
brilliant

WOW ceramic tile over a wood floor!! and against a wood base!! No need to put tile under the toilet. It's totally unprofessional but you make it look legit. Amazing!!
Can you show us how to install tile over carpet padding using velcro?
@Joeseph Smith
thats funny, and you never put them on a ceiling cause they fall.
I was using sarcasm about the ceiling tiles. Yes I know most homes in the west have wood floors. In the states it's plywood. That said, WE ALWAYS TILE UNDER THE TOILET TO THE PIPE. The mounting flange goes OVER the tile. . However, we also put a 3/4 " wire reinforced mortar bed down first. You never tile directly to wood, NEVER. I also know its a product promo but its wrong and should be ridiculed.
WoW...... This amazing, I won't hire this guys
How long does this take?
What if we want to remove old tiles and put in new ones, how to remove old tiles and how long will that take?
I only ever fitted lino or laminate to wooden flooring. I'm tiling my downstairs toilet and it's concrete flooring. Everything is coming out toilet and sink pedestal even ripping the old skirting board and tilingclose to the wall then new skirting on top. So much easier and looks better
Before put the tiles what kind of cement did you used?
is that base floor made of flywood?
Hello everyone. A neighbor Once me to lay ceramic tile’s on her bathroom floor I’m pretty handy but it’s been a while I haven’t done it what should I lay down on floor first? As of now it has a decent layer of Louan sheet.

Fuck yeah them earthquakes
Can you tile straight on to the ply?
so many negative comments, yet the finished bathroom looks superb.
Whats the point of a nice looking bathroom when Its Going to fail anyway. Thats like buying a nice looking car that has no engine ...... Thats a little stupid if you ask me
how is it going to fail you dimwit.
@@underpantswedgy the floor is going to fail because the prep isn't done correctly. For example, you don't tile directly plywood especially in a bathroom, it must be screeded making sure the floor goes towards the floor waste. He was using the wrong size notch (too small) so the tiles don't have that much coverage. He isn't using a flexible glue since the floor will move and the tiles will pop off. The lay out of the tiles is wrong. You don't cut around a toilet. You remove it and install it after the floor is tiled. The floor isn't waterproofed (depending on the circumstances) almost everything explained in the video is wrong. it may look pretty but he took all the wrong steps and alas it will fail. I'm a qualified tiler so I know what I'm talking about
Luke Chapman I believe you against this video and the troweled adhesive line must be straight to allow the air to escape to get full coverage on the tile to bed
