    Thanks for this idea.. this makes me realize how some palettes were strategically designed. This idea also answers my problems on how to avoid pan edges to protect brushes. You deserve more followers and patrons. 🎨🙏

    this is very useful, new info for me, thanks! fyi, the inexpensive Meeden and other generic tin palettes on Amazon are less than $10 including empty half or full size pans as well as cheaper options for no empty pans and I have found no negatives to using them.. they come in black, pink, and light blue. I apply small pieces of magnetic tape to the bottoms of each pan, very handy for keeping wayward pans from traveling. I bought a sheet of precut pieces a couple years ago, again on Amazon and not expensive.

    Great timing for me to see this. I just got six tubes of Daniel Smith Mineral watercolours and a nice six-pan tin to hold (some) of each. This method totally makes sense to me, and I'm going to try it out with these new beauties.

    If you're a pessimist they're half empty

    Makes sense. I'm gonna order a full (empty) 24 pan palette and give your technique a try.

    I love the idea… what are you sticking the pans into the palette with?

    Hi! Great video! Thank you. Question: don't the magnets get rusted, pell off, etc? Do they affect the paint then?

    Excellent video! I just saw the article about this method on her blog. Nice to see it done here though. I'm just getting some pans and new watercolors so good timing for me. 2 questions please? What sticky stuff are you using in your palette that's holding the pans in place? And... what are the pans resting on when you bake them in the toaster oven? Thank you very much!

      Don't bake your pans in the oven or you'll end up with a puddle of melted plastic - or worse. Put your pans in the palette. Squirt your paint in, and start painting. They will hold themselves in after a few paintings from dried paint alone. Don't bother pulling them out again to refill...just squirt in more paint 😊

      The sticky stuff looks like poster tack, or poster putty. Some brands are blue instead of white.

    I have been doing watercolors for about 5 months and have a mix of 1/2 pan sets and tube paints. I am getting ready to buy full pans for the tube paints and like the method you demoed. I don’t have a toaster oven. Will the paints remain angled if I just leave them to dry over night or should I just put them in the regular oven at 100 degrees for an hour. I am tired of wasting my tube paints.

      Yes..but depends on the brand. W&N yes.. Schmincke no... personally I would'nt put my pan's in a toaster 😮

    Thanks for this great video. I am about to set up my custom half pan palette. Can you please let me know how you label your pans and what pen do you use to keep the labels waterproof?

      @HannahSheehan  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks for watching Pradhnya! The best pen I've found for that purpose is a Faber-Castell Pitt Penn in the XS size. The ink doesn't bead up when I use it on plastic, and it dries quickly and stays in place.

      it's this tin right here: www.amazon.com/Illustrated-Faith-Watercolor-Shanna-Favorites/dp/B01M0WBAUR
      however, if you're looking for a light-colored, flat-bottomed tin that's already empty, AliExpress has some good options that will be significantly cheaper than the Pebeo/Illustrated Faith set.
