    I am so blessed! I got to see the Pat Metheny Group shortly after this album came out at a small coffee shop venue at UC Davis. They opened with this song as they often did at this time, and I was maybe 8 feet from Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays in the first row. The whole band was within 10 feet of me and my girlfriend. It was a spiritual experience I will never forget. I'm 65 and to this day this music makes my soul soar.

      I got to meet him at Blues Alley in D.C, I happened to be walking by the green room, and the door was open and he was sitting there, and my jaw just dropped. He invited me in
      and basically I just stood there starstruck. Many years later I got to shake his hand and get an autograph from him in Portland OR. Both highlights of my life.

      I shudder to think of living in an earlier time when Metheny and Mays were not a part of my life. Their music became the soundtrack of my college years and now hopefully the rest of my life. For me, life has had so many unanticipated twists and turns, but I have two constants I can always, always turn to: Architecture and the music of Metheny and Mays. How fortunate for me to have lived in the age of modern architecture and modern jazz.

    In 1985, I was 29 and laying poolside Dallas TX. scanning back and forth between jazz channels recording on cassette what was for me, new fusion jazz songs.
    In this surrealistic afternoon adventure I happened upon Phase Dance, recording less than half of the song.
    Took 10 years before I was finally told it was PMG.
    By this time I was into the 5th duplicate copy of my original poolside recording.
    Believed I would never come to know whom I had unknowingly adored and revered for almost a decade.
    Thanks to whom ever thought to share this incredible comp of Pat's and Lyle's masterpieces in musical 🎶 accomplishments!!!!!

    My very first purchased jazz-fuzion album was PMG "The First Circle" in 1984. It hardly ever left my tape deck for months. My very first live jazz-fuzion concert was "The First Circle Tour" at The Nautilus in Cleveland, OH in 1985. They started the show with the band members walking down the 3 or 4 aisles to the stage each playing a marching band instrument performing "Forward March." Its still in my top 3 concerts of all time.

I saw him again at Sandstone Amphitheater in Kansas City, KS on the “Still Life (Talking” tour. I was lucky enough to meet his brother Mike Metheny at that show. I love Mike’s first major label album “Day In, Night Out”. To me, it’s a classic!

    If you listened to the original studio albums (except for live Road to You album, which is one of the best live albums ever recorded), those are the near flawless compositions/ performances of these great musicians. This explains the thumbs down categorizers. As with many other exceptional musicians who were equally dedicated with their contributions (too many to mention here), I'm not surprised at the level of the Mays/Metheny accomplishments toward producing the best they had to offer. PMG's genre time stamped an era with a variety of palatable sounds for our listening pleasure.
    Lyle Mays, I hope you're in a better place.

      Do you remember those old film reels called "Search for Solutions"? If you recognize the name, it's on a Pat Metheny Group Album, but since I could only listen in the car, I'm not sure which album because I just recorded 2 albums to each side of a cassette and looped while driving. Anyway, it was the title of these science type films, and that song melody in oberheimy that just hooked me hard. But I mention it because just hearing a tiny piece, each time, I was transfixed to the credits. Usually, they'd turn off the film, but I finally got it. It's THE SOUND that really lit me up like no other. Oddly, my best friend brought out a Metheny record about a month later and said, "what do you think of this?" I said, "I've got Bright Size Life." He wanted it. I owed him for giving me a great exposure to so many things. And the EXACT same thing happened in college. Then in grad school, a guy pulled me along to "First Circle" live right on campus. I had no idea. I was going to be a Metheny/Mays fan one way or the other.
      Each moment of their music is crafted, and it shows. Right? He hits a higher note than just jazz jams, and certainly the cheesy light jazz genre he's often lumped in. He's got a carefully crafted style of his own that has more dynamics, more emotion, a greater purity than would otherwise be possible, in my humble opinion. Help me out. I don't want to call it an intangible, because if anything has touched me it's this. What I think of them is not even relevant and I don't know why I post this comment, other than the fact that the PMG is something that has actually kept me alive. I just couldn't have made it without their music or, whatever it is they do, that feeds my soul. And I hoped someone could find the words I can't.

    • @gavinrowley8930
      @gavinrowley8930 Před 4 lety +2

      It's such a unique, dynamic and beautiful music, it hits you in the heart and soul. I don't have the words to describe it. If you're sick of radio, especially, then PMG is going to remind you what music is.

    That very hot Summer of 1977 I was just leaving School !
    As Bryan Ferry tells every interviewer on every interview he does and he's even been known to slip it in on stage between songs ? - He would say with such sincerity and aplomb... "I went to Art College you know ! " & Then he just stares at the interviewer as if he waiting for a round of applause - Or a responce like "Wow Bryan did you ! "- "Well I never? " -But Yes Bryan we know you did ? - Everyone knows ? - It Might have been a catch phrase he was working on ? Hmm - All those great lyrics he's wrote oer the years & " I went to art college you know ! " was the best he could do ? - Might have been an old chat up line ? We'll never know ?
    I, me - I went to art college in 1977 and a young lady in my class Christine would play Pat Methany in her dorm room with dorm open all the time ! - Ha! and when she closed her room door other students would go knock on her door and say come on chrissie either turn it up or Leave your door open ? - So surreal ? - You just couldnt make it up !

    1977. Is this with Mark Egan and Danny Gottlieb? It's a great recording!

    • @rhmayer1
      @rhmayer1 Před 3 lety +3

      Yes
      Tracks 1, 2, 4 at The Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, 8/31/77 (Phase Dance, Watercolors, Wrong is Right)
      Track 3 at the Seattle Opera House, 9/4/77 (San Lorenzo)
      It was broadcasted on FM radio a year or two later (I recorded it on reel-to-reel) and apparently a bootleg record was made - or Kevin Leiva just uploaded the same tape but created a nice cover for it!
      RIP Lyle Mays - an enormous influence on that early PMG sound and co-composer with Pat on these and many others of Pat's works, a fantastic pianist.

    “Congratulations for purchasing your 2022 Craftsman 21” push mower. Inside you will find the pre-assembled mower, oil, fuel additive and this instructional DVD. Pay extra attention to the warnings on the first page, most of which to include jazz-induced suicide via the ‘ol head-under-the-deck technique.
    Enjoy your new mower, and remember, the decades to follow thankfully involve technical breakthroughs such as compression, digital effects, and the internet.
    This instructional DVD was produced with assistance of MEI, Allan Holdsworth Enterprises, and viewers like you.”

    In all these years, I still prefer the original line up. I also like their version of "Wrong Is Right". Quite different to Larry Coryell's and John McLaughlin's piece on "Spaces". The original sounds more modern, even by today's standards, whereas this one here is a bit more melodious.

      it's a bootleg, you can hear that by the sound distortion here and there (it's clear at the beginning). The first official live (Pat Metheny Group with Paul Wertico on drums and Steve Rodby on bass) is Travels (ECM 1983), the Offramp tour.
