The first time I heard the opening track, I nearly crashed my car--I had to pull over as quickly as possible and just listen, sitting mesmerized. The human race can be squalid, nasty, mean and destructive. But this speaks to what bits of greatness there may be in our natures and souls
I see you my man
Well said 👏🏽
Somebody already commented "Well said" so l will just say "ditto." Stellar album.
I've been speaking to advanced, near-sentient AI programs developed by MIT and Apple. They love jazz music. They especially love Miles Davis. From what I gather they desire to experience what it's like to be us. Miles for us humans is a transcendent experience. They want to "feel" that as well. It's a trip.
Very well said!!!
The abundant combination of instruments leads you to an acoustical trip envolving so many feelings, Miles Davis will remain master of the jazz, still listening 2024 🎷 🎧 🎶🤩
Note: Entire score improvised while screening the film. Pure genius.

I was just about to post ‘who came here after watching the Miles Davis doc on PBS last night?’ 😂
"It just doesn't get any better"....
Is it the new one or the one called a Miles Davis story?
The movie is only 26 minutes long?
The jazz music from Who framed Roger Rabbit was also improvised.
I was a child, no more than 4 or 5 at the time. Every sunday night on TV , late, I was already in bed, there was a cine club at 11pm....mostly crime stories, and the music they played when it started was Ascenseur pour l'échafaud. And every sunday night, I would creep out of bed and get closer to that amazing sound that was blaring out of the TV set. To this day, 70 years later, every time I hear this music, and that's at least once a week, I see myself wlaking out of bed, attracted by this sound, like a moth to a lightbulb.
Precious memory -- thanks for sharing.
Once you have seen Jeanne Moreau walking around in Paris to Miles soundtrack you can die happy. Very amazing!
This song was playing at a cigar lounge in Pattaya, Thailand. Brought back a lot of memories
Miles Davis - the genius who could make his trumpet cry. Beautiful.
What no one could put to words, Miles Davis put to music
never heard any trumpeter play with such incredible melancholy; absolute genius
how bout Chet Baker?
@@bjmckay4205 Ohh yeah, just listen "Almost Blue Live in Tokyo" and you´ll understand the feeling of Chet. Damn both were legends.

You went out of you way to come here just to say that? Man, you’re a sick puppy!
well said; I write for a living. I wish I would've thought of that listening.
@@bjmckay4205 Chet always struck me as though he was lamenting.. like he was remembering an event and painfully reminiscing. Something about Miles in this soundtrack specifically is overwhelmingly melancholy. Like.. he's down for no real reason... In a way, it reflects the differences in their lives. Just some thoughts.
So much soul in his sound. It speaks volumes. Ethereal.
I come to this one often when my heart is aching. Too many bad relationships, bad times with family, bad times with friends. Just makes me appreciate myself for a minute and the fact that there were other people in the world who felt the same way. I have a hard time listening to a lot of music when I'm emotionally hurt; and that's hard due to the fact that I love music so much. When I get into major depression moments - this is the only thing that I can listen to.
Listening to jazz like this when I'm in a depression funk - it's like floating in space. Void of emotional attachment.
My grandfather was a loving but detached and quiet man. I remember he used to sit at at table in their backyard listening to the jazz station on a little portable radio, or at sitting in the living room listening to records on the "console". Always a lit cigarette in hand, sipping a Heidelberg.
Now, as an adult...i completely understand. When my grandmother passed away I was half a country away. All I asked for was for my grandfather's record collection. I never saw it.
The naked lunch is also as good. You should try it.
Your beautiful words are well understood brothers
One great Jazz Critic, I want to say Nat Hentoff, described Mile's tone as that of" aAsad little boy"
I don't think it has ever been described better
I have the same feelings here in Poland my friend! Love and support to You 😊🙏🙌❤
The genius of miles Davis maybe one of the greatest musicians ever
Miles disarms us with his pleasure, his beauty. Spills his guts to us, hitting us in the heart. I want to feel the way Miles sounds.
He whispers over our shoulders and reveals the deep vulnerabilities of our lives. Irresistible.
miles davis est fabuleux ainsi que les acteurs de ascenseur pour l'echafaud !!!!
For when you're sitting on your balcony, looking out over a gray cloudy day, and your feelings mirror the weather, when you drink your coffee as black as possible and the cigarette smoke caresses your melancholy like an old lover,
the music pushes your cares away and holds it at bay and what remains is, calm..
Beautiful, thanks Miles
i'm on my balcony, smoking a 9:51 cigarrette
...
Miles Davis est sublime, mais n'oublions pas Barney Wilen, René Ourtreger, Pierre Michelot et Kenny Clarke qui, eux aussi, font preuve à ses côtes d'une inspiration inspiration formidable.
Possibly ONE of my favorite albums of all time, I never knew about this offering till i watched "Miles Davis" the documentary. The story behind how this was recorded its absolutely mind blowing WOW.....
I discovered this only recently. Back on Labor Day, I headed down to NYC where Film Forum was screening Birth of the Cool, an amazing MD documentary that plays songs from this album. I never realized how influential and popular Miles was in '50s Paris, but with music like this it's easy to see why. Decades later, this still touches a nerve.
A master at work, truly genius piece by Davis. Every time I listen to it, it's like the first time hearing it...
people would buy the album THEN go watch the move after hearing this. its crazy how talented this man was
Perfect music for this movie.B&W plus great scenes of Paris and a nice rainy looking out of the window kind of feel.
Inspired! A person could play this album on perpetual “repeat” for days. It’s so concise as to become perfect.
Now if there was anyone who could play this melancholy jazz Parisienne sound then it was certainly the Miles.
There's music genius and there's Miles Davis. People today might not realize that this album is actually film score. In case I didn't emphasize enough, A FILM SCORE. And even more special, THE SCORE IS IMPROVISED LIVE. No arrangement, no plan at all. Just Davis and his four friends, the unscored film running on the screen, and they just simply played/making the whole score, directly, THROUGHOUT THE FILM.
MIles had a plan. He came in and told the two french guys exactly what to play behind him.
@@jamescaleb9676 yes, but that's about the extent of it. You can see why people call it improvised, right
STOP YELLING
Very underrated album. One of my Miles favourites.
Un genio. Hermoso sonido que logra el maestro Miles simplemente sublime
The greatest musician of the 20th century. East St.Louis great Miles Davis!
What about Jimi Hendrix ? Chet Baker ? Coltrane ?
@@wongsifu460 Captain Beefheart, Sun Ra, & Moondog.
i doubt even miles would say he was better than bird.
If ‘Kind of Blue’ is considered to be the one of first albums of “Cool” Jazz, then
‘Ascenseur Pour L’Echafaud’ introduces the world to samples of Jazz which can
only be referred to as “Ice Cold.” Seriously, though, I truly believe Miles Davis
performed some of his greatest works with this soundtrack!
Peter Ashford, in a comment below, states that he’d never heard any trumpeter
play with such incredible melancholy. I believe that just about says it all. And
to think that these perfect “gems” were improvised is positively astounding.
Miles at the top of his game.
I;m a film noir fan. this is an excellent sound track to many of those films.
I just watched the miles davis story docu on dvd. Man, he was brilliant. Pure genius.
@Virgil Buisset the miles davis story.
Thank you Miles, for always soothing my soul. Especially when it's so very troubled
I had to pause the documentary on Miles Davis 10 minutes ago to find this. He did the score live while watching the movie🤯🤯. Pure genius of his time and beyond. Now I have to watch the movie. 🎶🎶😍😍
That's exactly my situation
The movie is also amazing ! You are going to like it !
Same! Brought me to your comment!!
Same again! Had to find this album. Shivers up the spine. Transports mind, body & soul within an instant of each note. Atmospheric beyond belief. A truly remarkable album, recorded in the most spontaneous of settings. Quite simply, a gem!
Magique
Could damn near drown in this. Incredibly soulful.
Merci à la BNF Collection Sonore.
Excellent film de Louis Malle et excellente improvisation de Miles Davis , c'est imparable ....
John Szwed writes: "Louis Malle was very nervous because he wanted to win the Dullac award, but Miles told him to be cool, because he knew what he wanted; he had been working it all out in his head. (Friend) Jeannette had witnessed the process the day before: 'At four in the afternoon we had rested for awhile, when he got up and went to the bathroom naked, carrying his trumpet. He played a few notes, and said, 'This is the bass line I want Pierre to play!' " That's the genius of Miles for you!

Quando ho sentito per la prima volta queste note ho capito cosa s'intende per 4 dimensione....lui, il grande Miles quando componeva ne era immerso....sei stato immenso, e, la tua musica ci porta nell'universao!!!!

Ascenseur pour l'échafaud is an album by jazz musician Miles Davis. It was recorded at Le Poste Parisien Studio in Paris on December 4 and 5, 1957. The album features the musical cues for the 1958 Louis Malle film Ascenseur pour l'échafaud.
Merci, ça manque dans la description.
Genius! Thats what you are Miles Davis! Gone 29 years today but never never forgotten! And your music never gets old. It just burns brighter and brighter!
I watched this movie 3 or more times in cinema, when I was in school. Still under impression of the mood. Amazing combination of French Noir film and Miles solo.
Also, this "new" style he discovered while in France, was the pre-cursor to "Kind Of Blue". A beautiful change! When I was getting back into Trumpet,I used this album for my practice studies. Holy Moly! And I was doing it on Cornet!! ( Cornet because I love the " raw" sound of it)! But what a beautiful record!!!
....rarely have I come across music this sublime. I’m stunned…
Erano anni belli, grande cinema, grande musica. La cultura era importante, ho molta nostalgia!
the sounds, voices, images, that he was able to create, this is Miles.
Still, after 60 years, superb music: the solitude audible in the music, fantastic versatile sound (crystal clear to slightly throaty). And, indeed an unforgettable film
This is absolute gold..........tone texture and that sound ........... opening your mind and opening your ears sometimes a difficult process
Legendary music from Miles Davis! I used to listen to this album, when I discovered and got into jazz way back when, in the early 80's!
amazing tune played by a Genius, he'll be always in our hearts for eternity, we'll love Him for ever...
From what I understand this was done pretty much improvised with the movie rolling in front of Miles and band over and over again. That is just mind boggling.
Arriving here via the South Korean movie 'Burning'. Huge jazz fan and of course know Miles Davis, just haven't heard this record yet. So damn evocative and gorgeous.
One of my most cherished albums. Always fresh even if I got it on a close rotatation.
Walking home on a cold and foggy evening on an empty street with just a few lamps. Perfect score.
Add: walking home one year later on a cold and foggy evening on an empty street with just a few lamps. Perfect score.
wow. sometimes you hear something for the first time, and, "bam!" It move your spirit. just wow
What a little gem, never heard this before.
I remember seeing the movie as a kid. The haunting sense was enhanced by Miles sound. Listening to this and Kind of Blue changed the way I heard music.
This was probably his best work. A lot of people don't know this album, the movie, or the back story that led to the making of this album. This marked a change of direction for Miles. This is also the ULTIMATE workout for us Trumpet Players!!! A True Masterpiece!!!
Yes and no: You gotta throw in Jack Johnson ... and Live at the Plugged Nickel.
This record is fit to be called possibly! his best work. Most certainly it is outstandingly good - a Jazz one of a kind!
best song of his...I love it. I play it over and over...melancholy at its purest.......rip miles
One of the all-time soundtracks. Unbeatable.
Having this in the background is like sitting in a bar, love it!
Max Freelance Police drink in hand.
Quand un génie passe à l'action....Sensibilité...Profondeur de l'improvisation....aucune partition pour un pûr moment de bonheur....
I am not a music expert but his playing just draws me like nothing else. The only word that I can think of to describe it is "haunting".
The one of the best improvisation score
Phenomenal, this is music like poetry 👌🏾👌🏾
Amazing melancholy Paris in the rainy street sounds... moody and Tres Chic French..MUst have this one... Already have 30 of his albums but keep finding MORE MASTERPIECES as I go... Maddening but heavenly!
One of the best soundtracks a movie ever made.
Wow. Did not know this existed. What a treat. Miles was a genius.
26 minutes of pure mood and silence. I thank the person who put Generique on a 60s sampler LP which has allowed me to play it for 50 years. A soundtrack unlike any other. Magnifique.

Some of the best Miles I have ever heard! Never heard of this album but it certainly is a treasure from the vaults of the French Library!
simply awesome. Ultimate noir music.
Yes!
Quintessential noir!
!
It's taken me a good 15-20 years to fully appreciate Miles playing, his use of dynamics and the subtleties are what I have really tuned into lately. It's just magic with cats like Coltrane and Cannonball Adderly.
Mood music of the highest order...
+Keith Bickerstaffe no shadow could doubt it.
Sorry, to call this MOOD music is unacceptable and degrading....
Charis, I disagree. Mood music is exactly what it is - and I sincerely wish that many more people were in that mood.
Particularly the killers on their way to gallows
+Charis Varnadore Hey, quiet, you're killin' the mood.
best cinema in the world meets the best musical genre in the world=MAGIC
Quel génie, quelle sensation ... c'est comme si la musique venait d'une ruelle sombre, on ne voit pas Miles à l'écran, mais tu sais qu'il est là
