  • For this video, I'll be cutting this 54-carat (over 10 gram) dark based Coober Peedy opal I purchased from the ‪@Outbackopalhunters‬. What I thought would be an easy stone turned into an adventure.

Nice to see someone not stuck with their initial assessment. Thanks

I really enjoyed this video. Very good results on a difficult piece of rough. I always love blue and green with chaff.
Good choices with the soundtrack too!

Thank you so much for the support! For the life of me, I don’t know why I didn’t cut the sides to reveal the color bar all the way around on this stone first. That’s like the most basic part of opal cutting and I totally didn’t do it on this stone.

PLEASE PLEASE make a concerted effort to find the edge of the stone in every case before seeking which table is top or bottom and the top needs to be investigated with the benefit of dentist style flex shaft.

Not a bad outcome but I’m sure the rough wasn’t cheap so might feel a bit disappointing. I don’t think you’re getting 300 per carat for this sort of thing.

I agree with you 100%. I think that price is a little high as well, but that's the rough estimate I got from opalvalue.com and that's what I use to estimate the retail value of all my opal. I only ever charge close to retail value after I set the stone in jewelry and then I usually provide a 20%-25% discount. Realistically, I would expect to sell this piece closer to $150-$200/carat for the stone outside of jewelry.

@@BlueLineGems agree I would have thought around 100-150 ct wholesale it would move pretty fast, 200 would be a slower sell on the raw stone, after set asking 300 sounds reasonable if it's in a nice piece of jewelry. Good work on the stone!
