  • I started hearing this noise whenever my chain was in the highest gear (smallest cog). Turns out the master link I used (Connex) on each bike was put on backwards by yours truly.
The shop had to replace them and used a KMC MissingLink master link. Same concept, but more forgiving during use. Cost was $17.

Your chain is backwards. Shimano 10, 11, & 12sp chains are directional. The stamping on the outer plates faces out, the inner plates have no stamping, they face in.
The chain will work backwards, just not optimally

I did not know that…I’ll look into fixing it! Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the video. Had this problem and my connex is indeed upside down. Hope this fixes the clunking!

Went 50 miles today with absolutely no skip!!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
    Thank you 👍
Thought I was gonna have to replace my cassette due to wear.
As a waxed chain user, these connex links are great!!!

Thank you a lot. I was wondering why it skips on the 11 tooth cog. Lol. Was almost getting frustrated with the thought that connex chains do not work with 11 tooth sprockets of shimano. Thank you for this simple video. Easy.

Are these links good for non-derailleur bikes, or bikes without chain tensioning devices?

The KMC reusable links can only officially be connected / disconnected 5 times . You can use them more but they get a bit loose. I wax my chains so they last a bit longer. I also have the connex wipperman links. When the links are joining the bottom chain span you install the slots so they look like a frown ( Frown Down ) which also means that the speed number on the side of the link plates is readable the correct way up ( with a small stamped line underneath the number ).

Great video showing the proper way to use. Just ordered the Connex 11S8 chain ~~~ By the way, have you tried with any Shimano 11 speeds chain ?

I can’t say for sure…although this bike has a shimano group set as stock so I can only assume it’s a shimano chain.

I don’t think it was a manufacture fail here. I put the quick link on incorrectly.
