    When you spun it around at 22:26 and i could see that crack, after jamming the baseball in, I was convinced the piece was going to fly apart. I had to stop and go back and look at the crack before - at 21:55 we can see the crack from the inside, so we know it goes through, and there plus other quick moments before that it looks smaller than pre-baseball. Heart stopping!
    Great finished product, as usual. the wing seemed like an odd idea, but I love every time you leave a little bit of live edge somewhere; it emphasizes both the nature of wood, and the ambition with which you approach the work; get the biggest best thing you can out of it.

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thank again for your comments, I have worked with Yew a lot so had a very good idea that the crack would not effect the strength of the wood. If I had put more pressure on the ball it would have so it is a case of knowing what you can and can't get away with. All the best, Mike

    Hi Mike
    Another amazing piece
    My favourite wood (yew) which can provide an awesome spectrum of colour.
    I did share this admiration of wood type with my wife 27 years ago when we just started going out and I almost scared her out of a long term relationship!
    I just love and share your philosophy of “marvellous mistakes” or as you put it slightly smaller pieces!
    Just fabulous on so many levels

    The yew looks terrific as usual. My heart sank when you had the catch. Nice recovery. The tall vase does look better with the wing.
    Good to see the new steady rest being used. Sanding the deep vase went well, but I know it took a lot longer than we see on the video.
    For large diameter holes, another option for sanding are abrasive flap wheels. Available in many grits. Easy to use with a cordless drill but you will need an extension to get deep into the work.
    Well done.
    Dave.

    The vase turned out beautifully Mike. I never would have imagined having (or keeping) the wing and I'm glad you kept it. It adds an interesting element and highlights the grain in the wood. One question I had while watching the video was if adding CA glue or resin in the cracks would have helped hold it together. Would not have made it as natural perhaps. Another excellent (and well edited) video and creative piece.

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Thanks my Friend, I did consider sealing the crack and it may have helped with the catch but Yew splits naturally along it's length and in some cases like this I just let the wood be itself.

    Hello Mike, Glad you had a good holiday and are back to turning.
    My sister is an interior designer who always says “It is never a mistake, just a design feature”. And what a designer piece you have made out of this beautiful piece of yew. It’s almost as though the wood was telling you what to do when it turfed out that chunk of wood. To my mind, where the “gaps” in the wings are, make it look as if there is a sort of ribbon bow incorporated - you may not agree, but I like it.
    Congratulations!

      Hi Angela, I think your sister it right, I quite often incorporate 'design features' into my work but I call them happy accidents 🤣

    Certainly a vase with a difference. Not sure how it was going to come out at the beginning but must admit to it came out OK. Love the Yew colour after the Danish Oil treatment. Cheers

    Awesome vase.
    Not so sure I would have been quite as polite as you were when it chipped lol so kudos.

      Thanks Fiona, the holiday was amazing even with having the kids there 😃. The catch was annoying as I knew it could easily happen on that edge but, these things happen and I don't really let things like this get to me. I'm just here to have fun 😃, all the best and have a good evening as well. Mike

    Hi Mike, I was particularly interested in this video because my father in-law, who died 25 years ago, put umpteen pieces of yew, holly, sequoia and other wood into an outhouse about 35/40 years ago. I am looking forward to turning them.
