- Remove Massive Preview Files from Lightroom Classic. I saved 35 GB from doing this. This process does not remove your files it just removes the previews. If you select the image again, Lightroom will just have to rebuild the preview.

In preferences you can set Lightroom to auto delete the previews after a certain amount of time. Mine is set to two weeks, after two weeks they are automatically deleted.
Thank you !!
One of the easiest tutorial. It helped me to save around 1TB of space. Thank you once again
Wow that was a lot of
Thanks John. Straight to the point and useful information.
Exactly what I needed! Thank you!
Thanks! I had over 300GB of previews. LOL Already shot over 100k of images this year. Cant believe I didn't do this sooner.
Thankyou so much for this, it save me a ton of space!
Exactly what I needed thank you!
Thank you John for another great session
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome! Thanks!
lifesaver thank you John!!!!!!
Glad i saved a life!
oh, i struggled a lot, your your valuable tutorial make me, to get rid off, from this mess, thanks a lot
You're welcome!
Thank you for this video. Removed 21 GB🥳.
Now Inhave the same question for deleting old backups, assuming they take a lot of space too. Wondering why you cannot instruct LRC to remove these automatically rearing the last 1-3 versions. My catalogues were renamed by LRC few times V10,11,12 I believe. Can Indelete all these old backups from 10 years and how please.
Thanks so much, I am subscribing!
Thanks for subbing!
Thank u!!! 🎉
Thank you 🤘🏻 just got rid of 216,758 photos 😂
Dziekuje !! Pozdrawiam z Polski :)
I have 67K images at a whopping 196Gb of space swallowed up.
Going to have to build up the courage to give this a shot.
Thanks for being so clear and getting straight to the point. :-)
Thank you!!!!
You're welcome!
I have done it, but just curious, what is Discard Smart Previews?
Basically the same thing. You can create a variety of previews.
Thanks!
You bet!
@John Whitehead Images: I noticed you mentioned you don't use Lightroom in a comment you made. What program are you using John? Lightroom is very slow for my large RAW files (even w/one to one previews) and frustrating to edit with. Thanks.

Photo Mechanic by Camera Bits. I think you can try it out for 30 days.
Thank you. Do you know how to do it from Lightroom app in iPhone?
I found this. I don’t use the cc version. www.lightroomqueen.com/clear-space-mobile-device/#:~:text=On%20iOS%2C%20go%20to%20the,to%20purge%20the%20offline%20content.
Thanks
No problem
You deleted all your previews, or previews of files/images you have discarded? I assume if you delete all your previews, when you open an image LR will generate a new preview for that image.
Yes it will.
Where can I see just how much space the previews are taking up and, after going through the removing of the 1:1 previews they still show in LR, that's normal?
No the previews are gone, what you see is the thumbnail in the catalog. To see how much he removed you’d have to know the size of your hard drive before you deleted the images and then subtract what the size was after it’s probably too late
How do you do this in the new lightroom .
I don't understand why people use classic
Classic is not an old version of lightroom. It is a reaaly for laptops and desktops to work locally. Lightroom cc is for phones and tablets. And sorry I don’t know how to do it on CC because I never use it.
Thank you! Does the photograph number drop? Mine still says 77,000
It should
Doesn't help much at all for me. I sometimes get data back but not much and the LRDATA file is still huge. I could just delete the LRDATA folder, but then I lose access to "embedded preview"/sidecar files which is down to bad design, since the embedded JPEG should still be in the RAW files.
This is why I do not use Lightroom. This is all caused by cataloging. I have not tried to ever delete the LRDATA file. I do not think it will actually delete the .xmp files. They should stay with the main raw files. LRDATA is just what catalogs. Use Bridge of Photo Mechanic and that will solve this issue. Adobe Camera Raw and the Lightroom Develop Module are exactly the same.
I agree my take is as follows : I did this 37 times throughout the day and 3 restarts. Fact: after completing process you should be able to go to desktop to your LRCAT and go to preview and it should read zero, yet mine never changed! In addition i did the one for the 1:1 and smart previews, yet after discarding previews in LR the LRCAT folders on desktop remain on changed!!!
Good morning John, not certain if you will see this comment but I have the exact same problem on my Mac with close to 77 Gig in my preview file. I followed your instructions and while I saw Lightroom removing the preview files at the top left hand corner,, the reality is that the preview data is still there. Is there any other way for me to erase this file??? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Do you mean the xmp file
How do you do this on just plain Lr?
I have no idea I don’t use it
Ok, so I am trying to figure this out. If I delete my "Lightroom Catalog-v10 Previews.lrdata" (which is 82.78GB!!! on my internal HD!!)..... when I open LR again, will it re-generate all of those previews for my 110,000 images in my catalog? And wouldn't that cause a big delay or make my computer work really hard to do this? (I only have a laptop).... (PS- all my image files are located on external HDs, but my LR files are on my internal HD). I need to make space asap.... HELP. please, i'm nervous. Thank you!!!
First, it will not delete your images. If you do the process in the video it only gets rid of the cache that stores the previews. Yes, you do not want to to re-render that would take forever. It will only render previews that you select and try to view. In those cases it will need to render those previews. You do not want to delete the .xmp files that store metadata, just the previews. The lrdata is a bit different.
@@Jcwphoto thank you. I think I'm still missing something. What exactly is considered a "preview"? Is it when you click on an image and it opens up larger? (Even when you don't have the ext HD attached), is it also the little pictures that show up when you open lightroom and as you scroll through? I like to see everything when I open LR (the little pictures)... so if I delete the lrdata previews as per your video, does that mean LR will have to regenerate all those little pics every single time I open LR? Sorry for not catching on so quickly! :)
@@coldinyk the thumbnail is the little picture on the bottom. The preview would be when you click on the little thumbnail and then above it you see the bigger picture that’s the preview it has to generate one so you can see it and you can generate it in different sizes full-size optimized whatever you want
Show!!
Thanks but I do not know what that means.
Users of Adobe Bridge should remember the same applies.
John, anyway to disable "fetching initial previews", on LR. It takes forever and I have to hit the x at the top of the box to stop them.
Goto Library/previews. You can also change the method LR uses when importing. It is on the right hand side.
1:40 How to do it
why my storage not decrease after following this tutorial ;( ?
I should but you might try restarting your computer
@@Jcwphoto my storage did not reduce either, please help!
@@seyekehinde7078 did you restart your computer
This isn't CORRECT! Notice I did this 37 times throughout the day and 3 restarts. Fact: after completing process you should be able to go to desktop to your LRCAT and go to preview and it should read zero, yet mine never changed! In addition i did the one for the 1:1 and smart previews, yet after discarding previews in LR the LRCAT folders on desktop remain on changed!!!
No, I am correct. What you are talking about is different. I am removing the preview, but not the image from the catalog. If want to remove the image from the catalog you need to select the image and go to photo/remove image from catalog. Mine only removes the preview. If you select the image again in the catalog it will rebuild the image preview. I clearly state that in the video.
SO MANY INTRODUCTION JUST TELL STRAIGHT TO THE POINT
Two things. First, the youtube algorithm wants videos at least 8 minutes long. If not they will never get shown. Second, there are two types of people. One that wants the how and why and some that just want how. I am making to the point videos, and will add this to my list.
