    The first one seems fine, but the third one definitely has the end of the platter damaged, as the scraping noise signals.

    • @AiOinc1
      @AiOinc1 Před 3 lety

      The scratching sound comes more from the lack of the cover. It causes air to be improperly channeled under the heads and they sink lower towards the platters surface.

    • @cdos9186
      @cdos9186 Před 3 lety

      @@AiOinc1 I'd assume that greatly increases the chance of a head crash right?

      @@cdos9186 the sound you're hearing is the heads contacting the disk, that *is* a head crash by most definitions

    #1 Bad heads / head amp / flex cable
    #2 Bad stepper / driver
    #3 Head crash

    I'm pretty sure this was the hard drive in my 386 when I was a kid in the 90's

      They were extremely common in their day.

    what is the problem with the second one (1m9sec), I have a ST251-1 with exactly the same behaviour and noise and would like to get some data off it. electrical or mechanical problem?

    any extra seagate at-251-1 hard drives that work im interested in some

    I have some Seagate ST-251 drives 2 in good shape and two that need help.
    One has damage to the flex cable at the front of the cover in 7 conductors and I may be able to do something with it.
    The worst one was given to me without a cover and the top head ripped off. It can run on 5 heads, but still has significant damage that it is only useful as a demo drive at 20MB.
    All my drive have good logic boards and mechanicals.

    They all sound like they have damaged platters, so the heads are likely damaged as well.

    • @AiOinc1
      @AiOinc1 Před 3 lety

      Damaged platters? The whine is coming from the bearings inside the spindle motor. That and when the drives are open the airflow is not channeled properly and the heads do not lift as far off the platters.

      @videotape2959 Před 3 lety

      @@AiOinc1 Then why does the sound come and go depending on where the heads are?

      MarWi16A I think these hard drives are absolutely gorgeous machines it's nice to see what our current hard drives have come along since the 80s and 90s I wouldn't mind all three of these hard drives just to have them Idle for no reason maybe just sit there and play with their heads move the heads back-and-forth pretend to read right data

  • @rallyscoot
    @rallyscoot Před 8 lety +4

    Do you know why its dead? Have you ever consider to reflash the eprom? I guessing these eproms will loose their contents over 25+ years..

    • @silasmcgee3647
      @silasmcgee3647 Před 7 lety +3

      rallyscoot I don't know if he even tested them... because all I see them doing apart from the second hard drive which had a dead stepper motor all they were doing was the seek test
