One of Ebert's best lines ever: "Seems to me that the Medgar Evers story should maybe star a black guy, that's just the way I felt." Loved the man, miss him to this day.
North. The only reason that movie is remembered today is because of S&E.
brilliant choice. you RULE for continuing to make these. thank you sooooo much
The Sure Thing is criminally underrated.
I'm loving these comps!
I was 12 going on 13 the first time I saw Stand By Me in the movie theater. It was the summer of 1986. A long time, but only if you measure in terms of years. I made my older sister take me to see it twice. It was my favorite movie at the time and the fact that Rex Reed despised it is reason enough to consider it a classic. This is the same man who praised Crimes of the Heart the same year. 'Nuff said!
I thought it was that other hack that hated it? It's just funny to see you can see why siskel and ebert were so successful, and every time they tried to replace them it just failed. Just couldn't match the chemistry.
Ebert's North review is iconic
23:48 my all-time favorite S&E review.
It's insane to think about how many back to back hits Reiner had to start his career. From This Is Spinal Tap to A Few Good Men, all were at least positively reviewed and even if they weren't hug box office hits, they became true cult classics on home media.
Didn't have a flop until North in '94.
Reiner had a crazy run until North. He's a bit forgotten for as many classics as he's directed.
North, the legend. Thanks for uploading these compilations.
I do appreciate the nuance of Ebert's critique of A Few Good Men, but the movie deserves a thumbs up.
Rex Reed is such a doofus
A thieving, gay doofus
Is that the clown who pans Stand By Me.
That lunatic gave Arrival 1/4 stars 🙄
@@clash79Arrival is pretty bad after the dumb montage where they just learn to speak the alien language and the movie wildly shifts tones. It's a very uneven movie and I would rate it about the same.
@@jaredbellow lol
I remember watching The Princess Bride for the first time on HBO when it was new. My Mom and I were at a neighbor's house who had a son my age. We're about an hour into the movie, and my Mom tells me to go home and get ready for bed. (School night) So after a little begging followed by a HARD "NO!" .... My little eleven year old ass BOOKS IT HOME where my Dad is sitting in the living room playing his guitar. As I'm walking in, I yell, "Dad, Mom said I could finish a movie in your room before I go to bed!" IT WORKED! I was a DEVIOUS 11 year old who was seeing THE PRINCESS BRIDE for the first time!?! I was GOING to finish the F'ING MOVIE!!!
He's never brought up with the greatest of filmmakers but he truly has one of the most varied filmographies with classic after classic.
Couldn't agree more! His ENTIRE filmography is impressive as HELL! Particularly Misery; which, as a King fan, is THE ONLY movie I like MORE than the book. And The Princess Bride! Been one of my FAVORITE movies since I was 11 years old!
@@user-sy5sy2np8r Reiner's movie "North" was eviscerated by Siskel & Ebert as one of the worst films they've ever seen.
@@tekharthazenyatta2310 Ok. Other than North! Never seen it, though. It's reputation has always kept me away. FAR away!!
@@user-sy5sy2np8r I like most of Reiner's films, except A Few Good Men, which I found to be tediously sermonizing. The truth is, I find Reiner to be such an insufferable douchebag who wanders way out of his lane on the political front that I'm compelled to highlight some of his worst films. But, I have to admit that Spinal Tap and The Princess Bridge are two of my favorite comedies from that era. What happened to that director? He sure seems to have fallen off the map.
@@tekharthazenyatta2310 I had forgotten about all that. You're right! The man IS a total blow hard! Still made some good movies, though.
Roger’s written review of North was very similar to the mental, real-time reaction I had watching Avatar.
Misery is one of my favorite Rob Reiner films along with The Princess Bride. Agree with them about the film North which was really stupid. I can't believe how many famous people agreed to be in that movie.
I'm a big fan of Stephen King's early work, and Misery is the ONLY movie that I like MORE than the book! Everything about it's atmosphere and tone makes for an ENGROSSING experience. And of course, Cathy Bates as Annie Wilkes is one of THE BEST performances in cinema history!
Great movie but I can't agree, the book is better
@@jobygoobYep....the book. Everyone loves the hobbling in the movie....I liked the book, more devious.
In 1986, Siskel and Ebert moved from Tribune broadcasting to to Disney and the former replaced them with Reed and Harris.
Nice reminder that sometimes Ebert got it very wrong. (A Few Good Men)
Ebert so right about A Few Good Men
Meathead did some good work. Some bad too but overall I give him thumbs-up.
I love that you included the two other bozos reviewing Stand By Me. Really made me appreciate Roger and Gene.
Yeah, they had left Tribune to go work at Buena Vista and that didn't start until Sept. so for awhile we didn't have them and therefore no Stand by Me review.
At the Movies was a series with Siskel and Every made by PBS...and it became very popular... Siskel and Ebert became nationally famous and signed for their own nationally syndicated series. PBS still owned the name At the Movies and tried to keep the series going with different critics, without success. Siskel and Ebert's series was very popular in syndication, made them both rich, and continued even after the death of Siskel... but was never as popular as with him...when Every became too ill to continue regularly, the show pretty much died, as other critics couldn't capture their intelligence and sharp edges banter.
thanks for the recap, champ.
This is from Tribune, not PBS.
The show on PBS was called Sneak Previews
North is such a perplexing film for all involved.
6:52 for grim prescience on the direction of the American film industry.
Do Amy heckering next.
10:25 What!!!
My favorite review of all time is the north review. Rob Reiner what were you thinkin
I misread the title as their reviews of Rob Schneider films. Now there's a compilation worth not making.
What are you talking about?! Their worst of the year episodes are the most fun to watch as they take the piss out of them. A Rob Schneider episode would pretty much be the equivalent.
WHO IS BILL HARRIS 🗣
WHO IS REX REED 🗣
They were the replacement on At the Movies in 1986 when Siskel and Ebert left that to go to Buena Vista that fall.
The one guy's Stand By Me review was absolutely garbage. That wasn't even Siskel & Ebert. What a joke.
I know. “Stand by Me” and “The Body” perfectly captures the adolescence of boys.
But I’m glad they show other critics on here, because all it does is high lights the special chemistry Siskel & Ebert had, the intelligence, the wit, and the hilarious barbs they traded.
They will never be another quite like them.
@@WilliamLyons-ym7ee I am too, it's just a shame they couldn't be the ones to do that specific review. I would've loved to have heard their thoughts on it.
You can read all the Ebert reviews on his website. I wonder if Siskel's are archived somewhere. @@JustinProper
Rex Reed is the worst. It’s no coincidence that every bad movie always had a poster or box quote by him singing its praises. He didn’t ever like good movies.
North wasn't that bad
WTF is that drama queen panning Stand By Me in the middle of this?
Longtime New York critic Rex Reed.
Queens just don't get it
Meathead
7:45 Ebert is incredibly rude.
Rex Reed was the worst critic ever I don't think I agreed with him once.
Most miserable person that ever existed.
Never understood why A FEW GOOD MEN is so praised. A nice television movie at most... good performances... Cruise is good, Nicholson too...It's all performances and it feels like a play, stagey and talky. Ebert is spot-on!
A Few Good Men is one of my guilty favorites. The ironic hipster in me wants to hate it but the melodrama is just too strong for me to resist.
The story is shallow, but it’s worth watching. Nicholson in particular is so good he can kind of mail in scenes (which he does in a few spots here), and they’re still pretty memorable all these years later.
STAND BY ME is conspicuously missing.
Reed, such a bitter old queen! Harris never stood up to him, not like Siskel and Ebert's arguments.
Reed didn’t get or appreciate “Stand by Me,” because it was about red-blooded, heterosexual boys going through the awkward pains of growing up.
How could Reed possibly relate to that.
