I'm a lot more careful to keep the alignment right when I do it. I always screw them all the way in and then count the turns back out. It's also worth mentioning that the jam nut must be loosened before turning the screw, even if you're loosening it.

I have very accurate axle space markers. and yes, I did loosen the jam nuts before moving the bolts I just didn't mention it.
