Morning Rush on the Northeast Corridor (Amtrak and NJ Transit), July 21, 2023

Shown are all 79 trains that passed Harrison, NJ between 7:00am and 10:00am. According to the timetable, the only things missing are two Raritan Valley turns (5714 to 5413, and 5420 to 5415) that must have happened in Newark Penn rather than Hudson Yard.
Other notes:
--Amtrak 190 was running 50 minutes late
--Amtrak 141 was running 40 minutes late
--Amtrak 2151 was running 10 minutes late
--NJT 3222 was cancelled at Newark (mechanical issues), but ran through Harrison before parking in Hudson Yard. NJCL deadhead train X321 operated over an hour later than scheduled, perhaps the result of the equipment shuffle triggered by 3222's set going OOS.
Overlay info: consists that appear more than once in the video are noted with (2x) (3x) etc. Departure times are from the April 23, 2023 NJ Transit employee timetable (typically one minute later than the public timetables), and departure stations are the first revenue stops for each train. Trains running express between Newark/EWR and outlying points, in either direction, are noted (i.e. "exp. Metropark").

Great views from a fresh location. I would like to railfan there from Ohio. Looks like you filmed from a parking deck and got great views. Did anyone hassle you about filming from that deck? Can you park and film from there? Thanks so much!

The parking garage in Harrison is a popular railfanning spot. To be extra safe, we actually used the garage for our car during our trip, so we had "rights" to be there. That said, the three times we've used it (once in 2019, twice this summer), each for several hours, we've never been bothered.

As you can tell, PATH is not a part of the US Railway Network. Because of this, PATH trains do not share trackage with NJT & Amtrak. Only roadbed and/or stations are shared -- such as at Hoboken, Harrison and Newark Penn.

How do you track the trains and more specifically, How do you track the New Jersey Transit deadheads?

Primary source is the NJT employee timetables (a good Google search will find them), which includes the deadheads. NJT Multilevels usually display the train number, and the Comets at least show destinations. I also use TransitDocs to verify the Amtrak trains (very useful since they archive data so you can access it weeks later), and if I'm on the ball, I'll screenshot DepartureVision screens from Newark Penn (accessible on the NJT app) while I'm shooting. Then it's just logic and sorting things out--if I'm unsure of a deadhead, I can often confirm it when the same consist returns later as a revenue train that I know originated in a specific place.
