I just got my own last week and they are so pretty♡ i hope i can manage to keep her well and maybe get some olives if i'm lucky
So last year by the end of winter my olive looked so pathetic I almost threw it away, thank goodness I didn't! I pruned it up, gave it new soil and put it outside in the spring and it looked even worse but then a few weeks later it exploded with new growth, now it looks worthy of a magazine photo shoot! I came here to see if it's going to do it again, guess I'll find out?

just wondered in to this amazing tree shopping for food n this local kroger store. The flower counter almost always has plants that didn't sell. Poor things sad n lifeless. Looking like please help me. Very sad.
Occasionally I mostly see cut flowers or small plants I got a money tree there last year. And the thing is less than 4$ so when I seen this olive tree I found myself now it's losing some leaves I need to repot it and now I'm going to prune it after watching your video I really want to keep this for a long time and love it like I do my orchids and my outdoor flowers. So long story short I just want to say thank you cuz when you were talking about your plan I felt that with all of my plants and a super cool have a great day
Very informative…I have olive tree in 5 inch pot .. plant is about 2 feet high 10 inches wide.. should I repot? And you mention Mediterranean soil? Do these plants produce olives? Thanks Adam

For shaping the growth the way you describe, I'd recommend looking at some Lst tutorials. Mostly done by weedgrowers, but it doesn't matter if you are pro or anti cannabis. The same knowledge is useful no matter what plant you are shaping.
Another technique would be the metal string bondage bonsai method of curling a string around the trunk in a spiral, and then bending afterwards. Remove the string before it gets swallowed by the tree though. :p
What kind of fertilizer do use, and will you have a video on how to get it to flower?

so it’s okay not to keep it in a cooler place in winter, if you don’t care too much if it flowers or not? we have way too cold winters for it to be outside and it’s obviously too warm for that inside, so I was wondering if I could just keep it inside the whole year while watering, giving it light etc. normally?

I was also curious about growing my own olive tree but I live in tropical weather with high humidity. I feel like olive trees are susceptible to disease in humid environment and recent news of olive trees in Italy wasn't helping. Also olive trees i believe need a cold period to induce flowering for olive fruit so unless i keep it in an air conditioned room and consume so much energy this tree is impractical for me.
What season do you prune?
I took my olive tree in side for the polish winter and have it in my bedroom. No grow light so it only gets a short bit of sun a day because the days are so short. The leaves have white spots on them and it’s concerning me. Suggestions?
Put outside in the summer and read the other comments.

Hi, i’m having a problem with my plant I left it with my housemate when I went on holiday and he all most killed it.
I brought it back but it has developed fluffy furry white soil like mould that has a appeared. it surrounds the outside of the pot? How do I get rid of it and is it dangerous for the young plant! I had this it’s since it was young baby olive tree from Cyprus
i frequently see white fuzzy fungi growths on the soil surface of my various houseplants, and sometimes even mushrooms. i think it is perfectly fine/healthy, because in the real world, plants live in symbiosis with underground fungi networks. in an olive plant though, that would indicate to me that the soil is too damp! let it dry out. maybe put an electric fan on it for awhile.

I love your website........ I just started Wild Olive trees form seeds........So if you do not mind. please I need advice growing Olive Trees in South Africa........ I will change it's growing conditions to suite these trees
They don't need much water. Let 3-5" of the soil to dry before watering. Instead of only 1" like most plants.
What should be done when leaf withers and falls down
I just bought one from Costco and took it home. It's about 2-3 feet tall, its a young one. I find that the bottom leaves want to easily fall off if I touch them, and some are drying up and falling. I did water it, and the soil seems wet but not damp. It's not getting any direct sunlight, just ambient light by the window because the sun doesn't get close enough to the window. There's new growth at the top however. So I'm not sure if it's just acclimatizing to my apartment vs the fluorescent lighting from the store, or if there's something wrong.
Possibly try a Slow drip Feed Capsule for Vegetables. 'But not for Tomatoes'. The dry leaf falling l believe is natural, as mine does the very same. Just means new leaves are coming through so the plant disguards them to not only save energy for growth but also still achieve maximum all day round Light, via reducing too much foliage. Dont over water. Spray lightly with Filtered and or Natural Rain Water Twice a Day. Hope that helps. Good ~ Luck.
Hi Christopher, thank you for your video! I have recently acquired an olive tree to have indoors as I really love them. I have noticed it seems to be drying up, some of the leaves are going hard and brittle, some are falling off :( I have only had it for about a month, I water it when the soil goes dry, it gets a lot of light - do you know if this is a sign of the tree being too hot? When your olive tree is inside your home in the beginning it will loose all of the leaves,but that’s normal
When you keep taking care off it there will be new leaves

Yes, mine is doing the same thing now. Not sure why, but sometimes it drops its leaves and start all over.
Yeah it dropped all the leaves now too! Hopefully it will start over 😅
i suspect that your plant is going dormant because of lack of light with the onset of winter. it is recommended to let them dry out and put them somewhere cool until spring. they can handle freezes down to mid 20°F, but not for long periods. the indoor warm room temperatures over winter could kill them though. my arbequina olive did what yours is doing the first winter i had it, before i learned that it must be kept cooler in winter and allowed to go dormant. also, i have learned that a winter period of cold(below 45°F) is necessary in order to get the olive to produce flowers in spring....best thing to do is go to a weather site and have a look at the local temperatures and precipitation where olive trees grow, and then try to mimic those conditions over winter for your potted plant.
@@FB-gm6el They can support much more than that where i live (Northern France) you can get 10°f and those trees are pretty huge maybe 20ft for the largest one

I have a 6’ tall olive tree that spends the winters indoors. I noticed a little drop of what looks like clear sap on the tips of a few leaves. Any idea what that is and if it’s a problem?

Hi Christopher, thanks so much for the fantastic video. I just found a potted olive plant on the street which looks almost totally dead. When you are trying to encourage new shoots, is it okay/healthy to prune it down so much that there are no leaves left?

Help! Many new leaves have appeared on my potted olive tree. The crown is about the size of a basketball (not very large). Last year the leaves were full size and deep green. Now the leaves are very bright green, not the dark leaves of the original plant. And many of these new leaves seem flimsy and stunted. They never grow very large. What could be my problem? It is an indoor plant that gets about 3 hours of exposure to the west sun that comes through the leaves of a tree right outside the window.

Has your olive tree ever dropped leaves? If so, what was the cause? My olive tree dropped some of its lower leaves, but they look perfectly green and healthy, and I can't figure out why they dropped. I would love to hear your thoughts! Your tree is beautiful :)
Sometimes it drop the leaves without any special reason. It might be watering issues or it could be from seasonal changes. If it looks healthy, just wait and it will come back strong.

My olive tree started producing bright large soft leaves. That was a startling difference from the tough, narrow dark leaves it always had. Why would the tree start making different looking leaves like that?
My new leaves start out bright green but turn dark as they mature.

It can be pruned quite short.

It just depends on what you want. Pruning stimulate growth too and you can shape your tree.
Lar oliventrea våre ofte stå ute inntil gradene begynner å gå under -8 om natta eller gradene holder seg under -5 gjennom flere døgn (ofte rundt jul her langs oslofjordskysten). Når vi da tar dem inn så begynner de å blomstre ganske fort etterpå fordi den norske høsten passer utmerka som middelhavsvinter :)

I år sto de ute hele vinteren uten en eneste skade :) Gikk ned til -7 én gang i november, men resten av vinteren holdt temperaturen seg over -5.

Lar dem stå mot vest, men det er bare tilfeldig, for det er her takskjegget strekker seg lengst ut og beskytter litt mot åpen kald vinterhimmel :) Det er iallfall det jeg liker å tru! Lar det tørke ut, men tok kanskje en kopp med vann én gang gjennom vinteren. Med mindre noen andre hadde oppi en kopp uten at jeg fikk det med meg. Veldig, veldig lite! Lufta er jo konstant fuktig utendørs om vinteren.
Men ja, pledd rundt potta og jorda. Typ det billigste 10-kroners-pleddet fra IKEA. Det funker veldig fint! Hadde også et par stående i drivhuset (som ikke er oppvarma) og de overlevde også fint. Fellesnevneren er nok unngå våt jord og tele, samt de kaldeste nettene.
Blir ikke modne oliven om de står ute fordi sommeren ikke er lang og varm nok, men det blir ekstremt mye oliven på dem som står i drivhuset. De trenger bare litt hjelp med q-tips eller risting/vind for å pollineres. Hyggelig å hjelpe! Bare husk å beskytte mot grader under sånn -8 eller vedvarende dager og netter godt under frysepunktet. :)

Har et uoppvarma drivhus jeg også, og planer om større, da skal jaggu oliven inn i planen der. Er det noen spesielle oliventrær du har, eller den slags som de selger på Plantasjen f.eks?

When it dries out a bit. Every other week or so.
My Olive tree was doing really well but then it lost all of it’s leaves and then the leaves started growing back but those died too and now it’s growing the leaves back again so I hope they don’t die this time

what a ding dong. now he has multiple branches coming from the very base of the tree, yet he imagines that is a good platform to grow a tree from! WRONG> best he could do form here, pick the strongest/ highest limb to become the leader, get rid of the rest, and start again
