I am a " survivor" of airline flying in the 1950's, through to the 90's.
On 50's and 60's Lufthansa flights a male cabin crew member would wheel out a small wooden keg of beer on a trolley, and serve passengers a stein of beer 😂😂

That’s amazing. How interesting! It’s funny because when I looked at the images of those Sleeper seats, I think (I may be wrong) you can see what might be an ashtray. Would be absolutely unheard of now! 👻🙋‍♀️

    • @Bellakelpie
      @Bellakelpie Před 10 měsíci

@@ghostcasebook1266 Yes, Even “ Tourist’ class seats (economy class today, but the seats and leg room were closer to todays “Premium Economy”) had an ashtray in each armrest.
Many years ago I worked for a major airline and when air bridges first arrived, we airport ground staff tried to avoid being the 1st person in line in the bridge when the cabin crew opened the cabin door. Especially if the aircraft had arrived after a very long flight from the other side of the world.
A sort of blue haze would be expelled from the cabin and boy, it was rank! 🤢 All that cigarette, cigar and even pipe smoke, mixed with the body odour of passengers who hadn’t been able to either wash, or change their clothes for over 24 hours, and stale air. 🤧🤧
Flights from countries that had a reputation for producing really foul smelling “ fags de la phew” were the worst. 😉
In those days, cabin “stewards” wore starched white waiters jackets during the flight and “ stewardesses” wore full length aprons.
But go back a generation when the aircraft were all propeller driven. There were only a handful of airlines flying across the Atlantic then and the major ones offered a daily and a night all 1st class service, as well as all “ tourist” services. The all 1st class flights were based on the luxury railway services on both sides of “ the pond” and some airlines gave those services names.
The 5 airlines their services were BOAC, Pan American, TWA and Lufthansa.
BOAC called theirs “ The Monarch”, Pan American had “ The President.” TWA had “ The Ambassador” and Lufthansa had “ The Senator.”
Meals served onboard these flying “ Orient Express” styled services, included roasted joints of meat, on a tray in a cart, with pieces carved for passengers “seat side” and served on china plates that had the service name and a logo printed on them . Gravy was served from sterling silver gravy boats. Trays of fresh Lobster were also common. Wine and champagne were served in glassware.(no plastic miniatures either, it was poured from a full bottle, wrapped in a starched linen cloth) Crockery was all bone china and coffee was served in lovely china demitasse cups. Passengers were expected to ( and did) dress up. Ladies wore a woman’s suit ( Dress, blouse and jacket, heeled shoes and a matching hat) and men wore a morning ( lounge) suit with collar and tie, cuff links, polished leather shoes and also a hat. A waist coat was even more desirable.
No track suits, jeans, shorts, tank tops polo shirts, singlets and sandals, as we see today.
Some aircraft featured a seperate lounge ( in the double deck BOAC and Pan Am Stratocruisers, it was downstairs, and in the TWA and Lufthansa Super Constellations it was in the front section of the cabin.)
Both KLM and Air France offered a similar service, but to the best of my knowledge, their services were unnamed. These ultra luxury services continued on into the early jet airliner years, before disappearing into history, as larger airliners appeared and air fares started to fall.
I have a few of those named and logoed pieces from both Pan American and TWA in my possession, as mementoes of a more elegant time. BOAC “Monarch” pieces are very very rare. The odd one pops up on E-Bay from time to time, and collectors pay a high price for them.

Love these aviation themed things! The only time I sat on a Concorde was at the Brooklands Museum! It was cool. They had a pilot voice and the mach speed counter that worked😊 loved the menu but not too in love with turnips and soup on a plane even Concorde is more dangerous than Snakes on A Plane! ( the silly but fun film..) Edit there is another Concorde at a museum in Germany. I think in Speyer?

Thank you so much James! I am glad you enjoyed the items. I saw a Concorde parked up at Heathrow once and I was struck by how small it was relatively. I’m glad you like the menu. Yes I’m not sure about the turnips either, or the soup! Forget about snakes on a plane, what about a new feature film: Turnips on a plane! There will be more Concorde things in the future too 👻🙋‍♀️

@@ghostcasebook1266 Turnips on a plane! I'd watch it😀 Yes Concorde is small inside is tiny. As I said you can get in one at the Brooklands Museum in Surrey. Some of it is behind glass to show the tables all set and of course but sadly the cockpit. Went about 6 years ago..must still be there I would guess..Can't wait for the next instalment Roger Wilko And Out CHOCKS AWAY!

There is a Concorde at Bristol too. It’s indoors and one can board the aircraft and have a walk through from nose to tail; the cockpit is amazing, so old world for what was a Mach 2 airliner.
You can also walk round the outside of the aircraft. It might be tiny inside but close up, not so much. Standing at the tail and looking directly at those four jet exhausts and huge delta wing is simply awe inspiring.

In 1998, I had to fly first class from Nice to Düsseldorf for 1000 DM because I had to get back early, one way that is! So 7000 USD doesnt sound too bad in comparison.

You must do some work in the many airbases that were left after the war? When I was at Topcliffe in North Yorkshire, I spoke to a maintenance man once who told me he’d been at a airfield to do some maintenance, this was 1992, he did tell me the location but I can’t remember? Anyway, part of the job was to paint the metal staircase to an old control tower? The team, decided to paint the staircase from the bottom up and sleep in tower overnight? About 0200hrs in the morning he and another were awaken to footsteps coming up the stairs? Startled, they got out of their sleeping bags and went to have a look? There was nothing, what surprised them was that the paint, still by 2am, was still wet, yet not a sign that anybody had climbed the stairs? He was about my age now, and seemed very genuine when he related the story, in the officers mess that morning, I believed every word he said. Great posts as usual.

@@ghostcasebook1266 Oh absolutely, my old barracks in Dortmund Germany were spooky, although we never heard or saw anything spooky, the corridors still had the rifle racks built into the walls for the SS soldiers? It was an old camp for German tanks, at night as a young soldier on guard duty, you sometimes had to patrol around the old buildings!! This series is growing from strength to strength, clear and well presented. Well done Nicola!🙏🏻
