    Fantastic video, and you know how to do one properly, showing the type of materials
    you use, and where you can get them, and what brand names they have. I have a
    burn mark in a nice kitchen countertop I'd like to fix. This gives me lots of ideas, and
    the last method with the wood filler looks easiest ? I also have some stain and scratch
    marks on some nice hardwood floors, and maybe you have a video on this as well. I'll
    have to check your videos. Again - great video. Do you have one on hardwood floors ?
    I know a lot of people use what they call "hard wax" but how durable is it ?? as it's
    just wax -- isn't it ?? or is it very hard when cured or dried ??

    • @KitchensbySavina
      @KitchensbySavina  Před 2 lety

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I would use either seamfil or the hard wax stick products (Mohawk is the brand I use). Wood fillers do not have the coloring is surface resistance needed. You will need to use a waterproof finish over the wood filler if that is the direction you want to go in.

  • @KitchensbySavina
    @KitchensbySavina  Před 2 lety +3

    Colorfil is used for hairline cracks or small imperfections. It dries hard and is solvent based. It has a high percentage shrinkage factor. Hard waxes are easier to use, but not as durable.

    Very nice work. I have a new counter I was cutting and the cut off at the tail end of the cut partially took a decent size chip with it on the end of the counter about the size of a nickel. It's not a deep chip. Would you recommend mixing the fill stick colors to repair it?

    • @KitchensbySavina
      @KitchensbySavina  Před 2 lety

      Yes that can work (Mohawk fil Sticks ) is the brand I use . Be aware that the fill sticks are "hard" wax. If it is in an area that you use all the time it will wear off. For a more durable approach consider fill in with wood filler or bondo and color with some type of enamels (like nail polish or paint.) Seamfil brand is another option that is solvent base and hard. Several thin coats would be needed as it shrinks a lot when drying. Let me know how you make out with your repair.

When dry, fill with body filler or epoxy. When smooth to your satisfaction use appropriate colorants, whether enamel paint or nail polish, wax fillers or Seamfil. I can't find Rapid Pad. Is there another similar product I can find at Ace or Lowes? I don't need a quart, since I'm fixing only 1/2" spot where color rubbed off when a screw underneath was over-tightened.

    • @KitchensbySavina
      @KitchensbySavina  Před 6 měsíci

      Rapid pad is formulated for French polishing on a shellac finish. I you are using it with powdered stains than I think a substitute may be clear shellac. Shellac may be reduced (thinned) with rubbing alcohol. All of these products a flammable so please read instructions/warnings and use with suitable ventilation and caution. www.mohawk-finishing.com/products/wood-touch-up-repair/padding/rapid-pad-padding-finish/

    Hi - This is awesome! You did a beautiful job matching the colors. I'm confused what kind of wax filler you used. Looking at the Mohawk website, the "Fil-Stik" they now sell a "Fil-Stik putty" which requires no heat and is for low-traffic areas, so it seems different than the Fil-Stii you used. Do you think it would be durable enough for the top of a bull-nose edge 4" backsplash behind cooktop? Mohawk also has a Hard Fill wax stick that requires a burn-in knife and looks very different than what you used, and a Quick Fill Burn-In Stick that uses a "simple heat source" -- it looks like what you used but has a different name and label. I suspect this is the latest version of what you used. Can you confirm or clarify, please? Looking forward to trying this if I can get the same product you used. Thanks!

    • @KitchensbySavina
      @KitchensbySavina  Před rokem +1

      I use this product. You can use it without heat, but quite hard at low temp. I use a heat gun to make it flow easier. Friction will also heat it up. www.amazon.com/s?k=mohawk+fil+stik&crid=3HC2ABE1KS1WN&sprefix=mohawk+fil+stik%2Caps%2C76&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

      The Hard Fil product I use on finished wood repairs. More difficult to use and not as many color choices. It can be translucent which is beneficial in a real wood product as it more perfect imitates that effect in nature. Plastic laminate are opaque, so that is not a concern; paint or putty work fine.

    Would you suggest using the wood filler method on laminate counter top quarter sized burn chip with depth? Are the methods interchangeable with various surfaces or is wood filler best with the marble granite only?

    • @KitchensbySavina
      @KitchensbySavina  Před rokem +1

      If you have a deep void (greater than 1/8") wood filler may be advisable on a laminate surface with wood core. If it is true stone (marble or granite) I would advise epoxies for a durable repair or the hard waxes for a suitable but less durable repair. I would use a clear nail polish of the same sheen. This product is widely available for little money and a variety of sheens. Alternately you could pruchase a spray can of clear Rustoleum or similar in the correct sheen. Sometimes you can change the sheen with a bit of fine steel wool and wax. Always experiment to determine acceptable result.

      Hi Jessica. Sorry about your misfortune, but easy repair. Back out the screw and hammer down or remove any material sticking up from counter surface. The Mohawk brand or any other wax repair products will fill in the depression and blend color as well as repelling water. If very close to sink or wet area a sealer is recommended prior to fill in. Something water proof like polyurethane, super glue or other. My website is linked in the description and feel free to contact me through that or back here. :)

    • @KitchensbySavina
      @KitchensbySavina  Před 2 lety

      Hi Christine. Sound like you are using Mohawks products. Rapid pad is a solvent and fixative. What ever system you use needs to be compatible chemical components. I use Mohawks Rapid Pad in conjunction with their powdered colors. for instance, you could use various nail polishes mixed to achieve the colors you need or alternatively enamels used for model cars. The key is a product that dries hard and durable. A product that can be purchased in a small size and offers many different colors so you can mix them to get the color or effect you need. I hope this helps.

    • @KitchensbySavina
      @KitchensbySavina  Před 2 lety

      I believe the powdered colors will dissolve in most solvent based finishes including varnish and alcohol. I don't think it would be compatible with water base finishes. I clean my brushes with lacquer thinner. Try mixing with a bit of clear varnish. Dip your brush in the varnish to wet it and then mix into a bit of powder to experiment.

    • @KitchensbySavina
      @KitchensbySavina  Před 3 lety

      Hi Teea, I just noticed this question. The burn is permament. You can try cleanser but likely will not work. I would use fine sand paper or equivalent to sand off the burned area after which you can color the area using some of the methods described. Nail posih is often useful as so many colors are available in small inexpensive quantities.

    Which is better? For a worktop tiny burn?
    Its not deep, just the top laminate has a burn and the laminate peeled off about 3mm and not deep.
    Colorfill or hard wax melted?
    I understand colorfill is supposed to be waterproof. What would be the difference compared to hard wax?
    Also, if a clear lacquer was used over it, would that be sufficient for it to be waterproof sealed?

If the bubble is not burned (still has a pleasing color, you may be able to insert glue underneath and clamp it down to repair. If this fails you can still remove the damaged area and fill/color in as described. I hope this helps. :) Thanks for watching.

    • @KitchensbySavina
      @KitchensbySavina  Před 3 lety +1

      Depending on the size of the area, consider this. Drill a hole or several about 1/16" diameter. Squeeze some super glue in and weight down flat. Use something heavy and flat with a piece of wax paper between so you don't glue the weight clamp to the counter. Either the super glue will fill the hole and just require minor clean up or you can fill any remaining void with one of the methods mentioned in the video.
