Back in the 1970's I commuted behind the SDP45's that pulled SP's commuter trains between San Francisco and San Jose. Those locomotives had a steam generator that provided heating to the passenger cars. If you look at the very end of those locomotives you'll see an extension behind the radiator where the generator was located.
Thank you for uploading this video!! Wow, what memories this brings back. I live about 3 minutes or so from this yard. When I go to work in the mornings I usually catch the UP hauler leaving Anaheim around 5 in the morning. Of course not nearly the volume of traffic as was back in the day this video was recorded. I used to ride my bike down to this yard and hang out with the service guy who serviced the locomotives. His name was Rueben. Under the Euclid bridge I used to help the crew member switch the cars once in a while. I would manually switch the tracks while he read the train orders and radio the engineer to kick the cars. I would ride my bike down here nearly everyday and get to know the regular crew members. One time they even let me ride the cab while switching. That was a GP38-2. I still have all the photos of my experiences back then. Back in the late 70's I could remember 60 t0 70 car trains being hauled down Santa Ana street being pulled by 1 SW1500. How fast things have changed. How much freight traffic has fallen over the years. Sometime I think the only company keeping the Huntington Beach branch open is Reliable Lumber at the end of the branch. Thanks again Vidwilzids for uploading this.
And then go eat at Douglas burgers! I use to drive over there fairly often - loved just staring at the engines, listening to the hissing and blasts of air. I also would go and watch the Ringling Bros train rumble down Santa Ana street and then unload the livestock and clowns so they could parade to the Anaheim Convention Center. Sweet memories - thanks for the upload.
Some are some aren’t. I don’t believe any sdp45s where saved, though. They are the gray engines in this video. But, there are similar looking engines saved with the same paint schemes. In Sacramento California, an SD45T-2 was saved and is sometimes running or on display.
Cool to see an Oregon Pacific and Eastern Railroad (OP&E) box car. I know that some of those ended up on the Burlington Northern (BN) before being retired. I think a few others survived through the BNSF merger.
The 10 SDP45s finished out their years working the haulers of Southern California. They never had their tanks modified from being part fuel and part water, and thus were kept closer to the yards account their smaller fuel capacity when compared to the other 6 axle road units.
Originally the plan was to build a new track on that part, just moved over to the other side of the right of way. But, then, SP decided not to. Guess they were happy with running on the Santa Fe btw South Anaheim and Santa Ana. I still miss seeing the trains crossing Flower Street.
Once again from a subscriber I have yours thanks for the memories I grew up watching these trains by any chance do you have any footage from Los Nietos that is the area are used to hang out by DT junction where the SP crosses the Santa Fe under Slauson Avenue along the San Gabriel River
Also during that era prior to the building of the Alameda Corredor that branch used to be quite busy with container trains to and from the I CTF facility in Long Beach & the oil cans
The 605 Freeway @ Pioneer Blvd. hot train action East & Westbound in Santa Fe Springs not too far from Pioneer High. Check it out, sometimes a duo SW 1200 is working the inner warehouse close to the 605.
These 1986/87 SP, SF and UP videos are amazing. I live in the Colton area and I am currently researching and collecting any info I can find. Would you happen to have photographs and/ or videos of the old SP Baldwin Park branch or San Bernardino or Redlands lines?
I don't have any media of those locations. I suggest that you make some visits to the Orange Empire Railroad Museum and talk to some of the volunteers, some of whom are accomplished local rail photographers. Thanks for the comment.
@@mastersproutgamer9327 if you have working knowledge of what the title says in this video post why do post a reply asking if it's Anaheim in 1987....what's the point of your post?

This is the first time I've seen images of the SP SDP45's doing freight duty.
I wonder if any of those beautiful gray engines are in a museum...

Haven't seen one of those in a long time. I guess boxcars are being scrapped every day. It looks kind of "stately" w/o graffiti.
This line got broken up when they widened the 5 freeway.
What kind of crazy luck did one have to have to catch a solid consist of 45P's? Wow.

I wish the part that was abandoned and covered by 5 freeway widening was still there
