I had this problem last year and DE only works for the day. The humidity ruins it through the night, and they come right back. I mean you can do it, and be careful of DE about putting it on foods you eat directly like strawberries. I got sick last year because the DE gets absorbed by the berries moisture. There are so many pill bugs and the best thing that started working for me last year was cutting oranges in half and leaving them upside down on the dirt and make sure they can get under it by pressing a small pocket own inthe dirt for them to enter and they come running for it above all other stuff. A few times a day, go pick them up and dump those little boogers in water and let them drown.

I am with you on this project. Those nasty little bugs are not helpers. And they go all throughout the soil. They do love moisture. They congregate under my grow bags, too. I finally started picking them off just like you did, but by the time I got my plants up the grasshoppers took over and finished it off. It is just a battle.

Oh man! This video came just in time. I added new compost several weeks ago to my small garden beds out front. Pill bugs are chewing on my spinach & Swiss chard out there. I thought the unusual amount of rain California got this year had something to do with it, but now I think it’s the compost. At least I know how combat them now. Thank you!

Iron phosphate is the only thing that works on everything. Squash bugs, earwigs, aphids, cockroaches... I was frustrated to the point of giving up about 3 years ago and skeptical of such an "easy" fix from my retired farmer husband. But it works. We buy it in a 5lb bag of little bb's and just scatter it through the beds like chicken feed. Our soil is apparently naturally deficient in iron (Sacramento Valley in California) so the plants are healthier because of the application too.

Here in Greenville Texas. I have a ton of pill bugs right where I planted my carrot seedlings. I hope they don’t get them. I had a blueberry bush planted and it was dead. I dug it out and I just saw a ton of pill bugs. Im wondering if they killed my blueberry bush. It was a very small bush. Also saw my first rat yesterday 🙄 last year it was the grasshoppers and rats for me. Thank you for doing videos on these topics. God bless y’all ❤

    • @siyg

Could be so, depending on the species but it’s also possible that they started eating the roots once the roots started decomposing/dying already because they love to feed to decaying matter

I have always had serious problem with pill bugs here in NJ. I understand your frustration with them. It’s so disheartening to have to replant over and over because of them! I think it’s interesting how so many “experts” say that aren’t a pest. Well they really are. They can take down small seedlings in about an hour. I found that Slug and Snail killer (organic product) does the job. But you have to reapply after a rain or when new seedlings are germinating. It’s a real battle. I’ll have to try DE and see if it is as effective. Hope you are successful!

May help draw them away from your garden plants and make picking them off the ground by hand a little easier. Kind of like a trap of sorts?

I like to have some pill bugs in my indoor garden but when they get out of control I use neem and karanja meal and mix it into the top layer and then leave a thin layer across the top then I dust that with basalt rock dust I like to use it over de basically the same things but basalt is more paramagnetic.. both the neem meal and basalt rock dust make them.stay away from the plants.. I surround my baby plants with a small mound of neem and karanja meal and nothing goes near the stalks.. I don't mind if they stay in the soil as long as they stay off my plants.. in small populations they help in my living soil system since they are shredders and I'm a chop and drop kinda guy.. as long as they have a food source they won't mess with the crops. You can also make traps for them with beer or even just some fruits and toss them when they get on it. The beer drowns them and then can be added to compost piles

In the north, we mostly find them along the foundation of houses, underneath boards or hiding places. I never have them in my garden. We do have some free range chickens and I am sure that is not hurting any. We do get slugs everywhere. Tons. They destroy everything. I finally had to buy slug pellets that keeps them manageable. I just started in my greenhouse at the beginning of the month and those darn dirt flies are showing already. This year I decided to go another route. I ordered ladybugs and am letting them live in there with my baby plants. Diatomaceous works really well on insects. It doesn't kill them instantly from my experience. It dehydrates them. We used it in the barn for flies, lice, fleas, ect. Good luck. Pests are such a menace!

That'd make me mad too-sure hope that works! I read up a bit, and perhaps coffee grounds around edges could help too. A single frog can eat 100 insects a night too. Last year, I had a little frog hiding in my raised bed so I added a little habitat for it so it could keep eating all the bugs it wanted. I never was sure if frogs were good or bad before, but for garden- very beneficial. They might attract snakes if there are a lot of them though, and if it's a toad ( not a frog) it might hurt pet if they try to eat it. I'm keeping my eyes out for pests better this year, bc I really want to grow tomatoes too! If that stuff works, then I'll know what to try. Good luck!

Ibwas always told theybare completely harmless bugs. So I'm ashamed to admit it took me about 3 years to realize THESE are why all my mulch disappeared over the winter.
Now they are also eating my whiskey barrel which HAD been treated & sealed before I purchased it.
But NOW we have discovered they have completely destroyed the main support beam for our house as well as the beams & floor in our bathroom.
I tried DE for to at least keep the numbers down but our exterminator says the reason things that usually work for insects don't work on them is they aren't insects, they're land crustaceans that even have gills & very closely related to lobsters. Which is why they were drawn to the wood for the bathroom as well as the mulch & whiskey barrel. Those are the damp places in the yard so they don't have to stay buried down in the clay soil during the hot summer days.
We have to move out while he treats the house because I have a respiratory condition. My service dog & I can be exposed to this chemical.
But we have no choice bevause they have damaged this home so severely that it is kn the verge of being condemable. That's especially heartbreaking because my husband's grandparents lived here & I was the little girl next door. We grew up playing here & its a historic house.
We had no idea these harmless little bugs were more destructive than termites & carpenter ants.

Looks like way to much work the little jars and beer is so much easier you wont be up able to see the beer in a couple days. Just don't dump them in the garden the beer will draw them away from your jars. A cheap six pack will fill a lot of jars and a lot cheaper than than diatomaceous earth.
