In 1969, Peter Schat composed Hypothema for Frans Bruggern. This musical work was to combine so-called ‘old music’ (a set of van Eyck variations for descant recorder) pre-recorded on tape; andthe ‘new music’; played live by Frans Bruggen on a tenor recorder. This was not only "avante guarde"; but, distinctly pinachesqe. Further, it laid a bold step squarely onto the dusty paths of Euro-social post modern music.
