Project is coming along nicely Ken. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few so don’t let it bother you that Lyle “Barnyard bully” has to take the long walk. Less stress on the hens might produce more eggs😁. That line in the tomato isn’t from a hungry insect it’s caused by too much watering or rainfall after a dry spell which can cause the tomatoes to burst. Keep up the great work and the Kenstead walk arounds are a great way to wind up the videos😊
I'm glad that Dan could take Lyle the rooster off your hands. Great job getting him in the cat carrier! Yes, the roosters never stop crowing. The hens will be calmer without him but some of the hens might start getting dominant and "riding" the other hens. They have to set-up a "pecking order" amongst each other. The hens won't take each other's feathers out like Lyle would. Nice, 4 shelves with the little lips on the big shelving unit. The bathroom door jamb looks nice. The trim around the bathroom door looks really nice. Perfect job on the big shelving unit. That's great that the bathroom door will also have shelving on the inside for more storage. The kitchen window trim looks great! The bathroom window trim looks great too! Wow, fan and lights. Yup, I spent $200 on a "square foot garden mix" (Mel's Mix) for my 4x4 raised bed many years ago! The expensive part was the vermiculite! It's not cheap to garden but it taste's so much better. Don't feed tomato leaves to the chickens. It can kill them. The tomatoes are okay for them but not the "nightshade" family leaves. Don't give them potato leaves either. Potatoes are in the nightshade family along with egg plant and peppers! I use Miracle Grow every two weeks on my garden and it does so much better. I think you'll like how things grow after you use it. Thanks for this video Ken! I even boil my potato peelings before I give them to my chickens. I never compost any nightshade leftover vines or stalks either. I burn them in the Spring after they have died in the winter. For garden soils add sheep manure and peat moss mix it all together and it will retain water longer and feed the plants of course fertilizer once a month is also good. It becomes expansive to have a garden when you have poor soils. Its easyer and cheaper to buy from the stores. Good luck with your garden Ken.
I used garden soil instead of potting soil in my raised bed this year. Did so much better. My plants are beautiful and productive. Never had to fertilize them

The tomato with the split/ring around it was not done by anything… it just outgrew the skin and it split. Happens all the time to cherry tomatoes. Still fine to eat. I would suggest deeper pots for the tomato plants in the future, and something that can drain off access water (maybe poke a few holes in the bottom of those pools). Too much water that just gets trapped in the soil can essentially drown your plants. Your plants appear to be suffering from that, and maybe a little blight. I am really enjoying your building project too. As for Lyle… you are lucky he was fairly nice. Our neighbors had a rooster that used to like hanging around our bird feeders and he was really mean and would come after you when the chickens were around. He didn’t last very long… the owners took care of the issue.
Ken, the seasonal suite is looking great! Your Lyle cracks me up. He'll like it over at Dan's, and we'll leave it at that... Sometimes too much fertilizer and too much water will turn everything yellow. Must have water drainage, or holes in those pools. A little sprinkle of diatomaceous earth occasionally will take care of the little bugs eating the leaves, etc. CT River down here is still murky, and the "gully washer" last night that went through northwestern MA and through VT won't help.
your 'Ken's Cottage' is coming along, nice to see the finish line in sight. The joys of organic gardening; I'd rather have the odd veggie chewed by pests than soak everything in dangerous chemicals.
The only thing you'll have to purchase for the next season is plants. You could try growing from seeds; for $20, you can get multiple varieties of everything and have enough left for 3 or 4 seasons. There are many natural/organic additives for enriching your soil for better harvests. (There are many CZcams channels that cover it.)
Zip ties are always recommended for animal carriers. There’s nothing worse than a cat carrier coming apart on the way home from a major surgery. The tiny house is turning out nicely. I can’t wait to see the Murphy bed! The first tomato is always exciting! Nothing beats a fresh garden tomato, or for that matter, any garden vegetables. You might be able to get some compost from Al Lumnah to spread over the top of your garden soil.

Tiny house looks really good. It is well built. I think you have banana pepper and they will be yellow. It is almost time to harvest them. For the split tomato, you have to water them a bot more, keeping the soil moist. Have a wonderful day.
I've always used Miracle Grow or similar fertilizers in pots with plants. My experience is usually they grow more, flower more, but it doesn't make the plant greener for very long. Avoid watering the leaves on tomato plants, water the soil lightly. I disagree with people saying the pools need holes in the bottom. Next year, put some pebbles under the soil, so roots don't run out of room to spread when they reach bottom.
Hello ken! Yep the cherry tomatoes are great snacks! You may need to suppost those cherry tomatoes they can up to 8 foot tall and grow until frost! Now the beef steaks tomatoes are still green around northern ohio!

Cherry tomatoes do so well, and are so sweet. I eat them right off the vine like they're candy. That split one did not get eaten. It just split it's skin. Sometimes they do that when they swell after being watered.

Your drainage holes in the bottom of your tubs may be blocked and not allowing drainage. I put my tubs on bricks to keep the drain holes doing their thing (mostly). I would like to do the same for my shop. I like the thought of the box not being an Energy loss for the insulation. If you’re able to show as much as you can when you trim it out. If possible! I was also wondering if (Maybe) your tomato plants have a little blight. It kinda looked like it. I think maybe you are getting the leaves wet when you water them. Tomato plants do best if you can water them without getting their leaves wet.

Ken, do you have drain holes in the plant bed containers. Looks like the plants may be suffering from "drowning roots". The soil needs to be able to drain off excess water. Check the ph of the soil and amend the soil as needed for a ph that matches the needs of the plants you plan on growing in that bed. Some like acidic soil, some like slightly alkaline soil. I've always tried for a ph of around 7. Tomatoes need a good calcium level in the soil to prevent bloom end rot also. Good luck with the garden. So, Lyle was the surprise you mentioned in Ep 26? I bet he was very surprised! LOL It seems it was a good thing for the Kenstead. The chickens seem very happy. The cherry tomatoes looked beautiful!!! and delicious. Those bell peppers look ready to harvest also. My grandmother made stuffed bell peppers when we were little and I still love them to this day. Garden is probably suffering from all of the hurricane rain you got (overwatering) and maybe poor drainage from the swimming pools shallow depth. Did you put holes in the bottom of the pools for drainage? Garden still looks wonderful. Splitting tomatoes is normal, some varieties resist better than others. You can still eat them. Love the Kenstead garden update. God bless
Bye Lyle. Looks like a couple of tabs on the coop roof have lifted a bit. Yes the color change on the hot pepper is part of the ripening process. I suspect it will turn solid red when ripe. The 3rd cherry tomato is split, not pest damage. Perfectly edible. That happens when there is too much water and they swell. Not much you can do about all the rain! I've seen earwigs in sweet peppers. If the peppers are bigger you can cut out the damaged part and eat the rest. And yes, I think the plants need the fertilizer.

I am currently having the same problem with a rooster. His name is Rueben, after Rooster Cogburn. He made it to 14 months before showing any aggression. He’s currently 18 months and I can smell the dumplings.
Sorry to hear about Lyle. We hatched babies and ended up with 2 roosters in addition to the daddy so we now have our laying flock and 2 pet roosters hanging out in a separate yard 🙂 probably won't hatch anymore unless we have to. Ours are Bielefelders, which can be sexed at birth.
Sorry for Kyle. I once lived by a chicken farm and a rooster escaped from there. It came to my house and every time I got out of the car it would chase me into the house. They have big spurs sometimes
The discolored pepper is not a problem. The tomato burst from watering after being dry. A good water soluble fertilizer is Jack's 20-20-20. Organically you can use fish emulsion and Alaska bloomtime.
Pepper change colour some from green to black then red others do similar but different colour change’s you can do’ a cheep test on your soil to see what it needs don’t over water is as important as watering in container gardens

I am currently having the same problem with a rooster. His name is Rueben, after Rooster Cogburn. He made it to 14 months before showing any aggression. He’s currently 18 months and I can smell the dumplings.

Sorry to hear about Lyle. We hatched babies and ended up with 2 roosters in addition to the daddy so we now have our laying flock and 2 pet roosters hanging out in a separate yard 🙂 probably won't hatch anymore unless we have to. Ours are Bielefelders, which can be sexed at birth.
Sorry for Kyle. I once lived by a chicken farm and a rooster escaped from there. It came to my house and every time I got out of the car it would chase me into the house. They have big spurs sometimes

The discolored pepper is not a problem. The tomato burst from watering after being dry. A good water soluble fertilizer is Jack's 20-20-20. Organically you can use fish emulsion and Alaska bloomtime.

Pepper change colour some from green to black then red others do similar but different colour change’s you can do’ a cheep test on your soil to see what it needs don’t over water is as important as watering in container gardens
