I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'VE GOT SAMANTHA BROWN TO BE ON THE PODCAST!!!! I grew up watching her and, yes, I also did think being an adult would look so much like her shows - and, yes, severely disappointed when it didn't. Honestly, her shows inspire my outlook on travel - which is so beautifully reflected in her last statement. Yes to getting to know the locals and seeing the travel destinations through their eyes! I will definitely keep that in mind next time I travel!

I love Samantha Browns travel advice to the point I use to watch her on the Home Shopping Networks selling suitcases as her travel advice was so priceless coming from a woman's perspective. I also think the reason I enjoy Disney Adults is because its usually a woman giving advice and feels like hanging out with a friend. Enjoyed todays discussion, Happy New Year!

One of the things we don't realise when we move overseas or love someone from overseas is that a lot of our travel is going to be to do with seeing our people. It's not the worst problem in the world but I empathise with Chelsea on this one, I'd like to use my travel time to go overseas on holiday not just to see fam sometimes.

For real. I moved to Ireland from the US 23 years ago, and visiting family happens once or twice a year, and that's pretty much it, beside brief trips to the UK. I went to Switzerland in 2022 and that was the first time I'd been to a new country in 15 years. Once my PhD is completed, I'd really like to start going new places again.

SAMANTHA BROWN oh my GOODNESS! I used to watch her shows so much when she was on the Travel Channel, and I can't believe I can watch new-to-me episodes of her new stuff on PBS. She's such a warm, gentle presence as a presenter, and it's so wonderful to see her again after so long.
On the topic of unsafe places: there's spots in the US and abroad where I just can't go because I'm trans. If I'm lucky someone might think I'm a woman who happens to have a beard and no chest, but if I'm unlucky I could get seriously hurt or worse. I live in New England and going to Burlington is totally in the cards, though!

Central Amsterdam (as in the Dutch one), has become a giant tourist theme park. Local residents barely go there anymore, unless they have to. Talking about anywhere inside Marnixstraat, the boundary between the old medieval canal network, and suburbs built in the 19th to early 20th centuries.

She's such a lovely person, what a great guest.
Omg, Huntsville, AL?? It's so weird hearing someone laud my city. Lowe Mill is amazing, but housing is quickly becoming less and less affordable. Prices shot up 50-60% in 2020-2021.

It's so funny that people feel safer in apartments, I grew up in a rural area and never felt more on edge than when I lived in NYC and was surrounded by people. I love a lot of things about city living, but I would have gone insane if I had to hear one more person's music through an apartment wall. Now I live in a village of 150 people in one of the most remote areas of the lower 48 and couldn't be happier.

Being a racial minority, I never felt more fear for my personal safety out in the southern country side in the US. Driving through the small town with my girlfriends to the AirBNB we were staying at, I could feel all eyes on me, and my only thought was like, if one of these men decide to follow us or make a move on us, there's literally no one for miles to come to our rescue.

Never heard of Samantha, but I took my husband on a bucket list of hotspots in Europe last spring because, as an American, you have so little PTO that you may never get another chance to even see the MAIN points (the 'A side' as Samantha said) that you don't even care as much about the B side because you're just trying to maximize your vacation. I don't regret it, but you have to budget your time and your money according to your resources.

Chengdu is amazing!!!!! One of my favorite memories of my time living in China. Some of the most delicious food we’ve ever eaten (we just picked places at random honestly). Strongly recommend taking the bus to Leshan to see the giant Buddha carved on the rock and the Han dynasty cave paintings. I used to watch her religiously as a kid, and I grew up to be a global nomad, and have lived on 5 different continents, in 17 countries so far. Love Samantha, I credit her show to my travel lust for all places big and small. I am so saddened that you are so negative about Positano and Capri. We went in the off season and had an amazing time there. It goes without saying, July and August are the absolute worse times to travel to some of these well known places and expect to have a decent experience. There are so many little places around Positano that are incredible and unknown to the common social media content if you take the time to go off the beaten path.

I live in Hangzhou (just a couple hours away from Shanghai) and we had a great guide that we had in the Yunan region. She lives in Chengdu and is so wonderful. I'd totally recommend her for local guides and catering to what you want).

I didn't grow up in the US, so I wasn't familiar with Samantha Brown before this video. It was quite interesting and I like a lot of what she said about actually asking locals for recommendations. But I was a bit sad to hear her answer on how to avoid tourism which is exploitative to locals. As this channel helps more people become get better with finances I think that would be a great topic to know more about and I would love it if you would interview someone to talk specifically about travel in terms of sustainability and not having a negative impact on the local population.

Travel is so personal, and people travel for different reasons. Not everyone takes every single trip for "culture." Sometimes, people travel to get away and disconnect, and that's fine, too. The happiest travelers are those who get exactly what they want out of their trips, not what everyone says they should want. The conversation also felt very Euro and America-centric, which I understand because that's mostly where both women have spent time, and Asia is super popular with American travelers, too. For people who live in Africa, our travel needs are different. We have different bucket list items and often want slightly different travel experiences. Traveling within Africa is also different from Europe or America. Many African cities are less walkable than European cities, so discovering places to eat is a slightly different experience since the average American traveler will probably not want to eat everything the locals eat, either. The conversation regarding seeking recommendations online could have been more balanced. Everyone's choices won't suit you, but there are probably people online with whom you share similar tastes and from whom you can take one or two recommendations. Still, I appreciate the tip about finding under-explored destinations if you want to save money or have a less crowded experience.
