    Happy new year, babes!
I wanted to jump in here and say -- as I see a little discourse brewing on the subject, lol -- that I indeed believe that raising chickens/homesteading/farming is hard and ambitious work! I have the utmost respect for it and the people in my life who do it, and believe it is much more demanding than the work I do typing away on my Macbook every day (lol).
The point I'm trying to make is that even work that falls into the non-professional/white collar category can be subject to the same social and algorithmic drives that lead us all to a never-ending cycle of feeling inadequate. That even work which is in theory meant to be about an authentic, personal connection with the land and animals around us can become a race to superficial perfection and optimization. Drawing a contrast between that choice and my own life is not to rank one above the other, but rather to point out that whichever path we take, this toxic culture of perfection can find us.

Be very interested to see if there would be a TFC that focuses on media comprehension and how social media users' deteriorating comprehension impacts content creation, marketability to advertisers, and how comprehension drives engagement (positively or negatively) -- could this also be generational?
It seems like nowadays many people miss the forest through the trees.

I do not know if anyone else has brought this up, but over 10 years ago, there was an article making the rounds online about how girls and boys are socialized differently when it comes to trying something new. They found that boys were praised for trying and persevering even if they didn't succeed, but girls were only praised when they appeared to have a "natural talent" for something and were very often discouraged from continuing to try if they didn't get it on the first or second attempt. Girls were pushed to stick with what they were able to pick up with minimal effort. The piece found, not surprisingly, that as a result men tend to keep trying and put forth effort exponentially more often than women, who tend to stick to things they pick up immediately or with only a try or two.
I feel this ties in with why women showcase everything as effortless, or rather, do not share anything that isn't effortless for them, because it feels like a failure for not coming easy.

I'd say it'd be even more freeing if we ask "why should we choose one over the other"? I wonder if there are systemic and cultural ways to help women who want to do both. It'll be good imo if women ponder for a minute that feeling like you have to choose one or the other might be a collective issue, and not an individual failing.

Luckily we have a policy at work where the generally accepted hours to book a meeting is between 9 am to 3 pm. Outside of those hours you can't assume someone's available just because their calendar says so. But those hours are more in practice to accommodate people who have kids and that have to leave or pick up kids from daycare. One of the most harmful side effects of the myth of “effortlessness” that you point out IMO is the fact that it makes some of us misunderstand rejection and how normal and okay it is to be rejected. If everything is supposed to be easy and seamless and that’s not our experience with whatever it is we’re trying, it can be so easy to give up and stop altogether because in that moment a person could easily feel that they’re not good enough. I think many of us have experience with this (myself included). I think this starts at a young age for a lot of people and definitely affects many of us, especially women, well into adulthood. The myth of having it all is part of this societal script that contributes to many women feeling behind in virtually all facets of life. Like having it all is exhausting and a recipe for burnout. Being able to say “no” to something and truly identify what you want (as opposed to feeling pressure to do everything just because ‘you can’) is a pretty powerful way to take your own agency back. This is the only life we get to live and it’d be a shame to not even try to do something we want to do because we don’t feel good enough or feel pressure to do what others think we’re ‘supposed’ to do.

Okay i had to comment again after listening some more. The part about women being discouraged or feeling stupid for trying is so real for me - I deff grew up (and still) fearing failure to the point that I'd quit things if I sucked at them or wouldn't even try if I convinced myself I wouldn't be good at them. But I'll be honest, a lot of the external voices in my life that shame me/look down on me for not knowing how do to certain things comes from other women, specifically older women in my life. It can literally be something as simple as how I peel a potato or chop veggies to how I decorate my house and maintain my relationship. It's another level of the effortless cult - older women have lived and experienced things and look down on young women as if they're so dumb or incapable of being as put together as they are. 😑😑
As someone who does wake up at 5/5:30am most days, I don't do it bc some fitness or lifestyle influencer told me to. I do it bc it's the only time of day I can work out before I have to work all day (i don't have the motivation to exercise in the evenings). 😅 it's become routine now, but I don't feel smarter, healthier, or better than say my bf who is a night owl and has a whole diff schedule. I just like that my workout is already done for the day. To each his own! If you don't want to wake up that early or don't need to, please get your Zzzzs!

Woman have made the biggest impact, even sometimes over my husband or male friends, who love ‘em but they offer simple solutions I can’t always practice. Love the radical contentment philosophy, but I think it's a mistake to think of the mom/family/homestead-y life as the unambitious option; that's just as much work as gaining career status, just in a different form, and framing it as though it's the slacker option just validates the idea that outside markers of success (i.e. job title) are the only way to conceptualize achievement.
I'd say that the real version of "it's OK if you underachieve by outside standards" would be like, if you have a job you love but that isn't impressive on the family Christmas letter - maybe working in a bookstore that gives you plenty of time to yourself. Or if you do have kids, not caring about them winning things or getting straight A's, as long as they're having a chill and happy childhood.
Don't want to nitpick a point that's not central to the interview, just think that framing raising kids as underachieving can add to moms' psychological distress.

Hard work and ambition are 2 different things. While yes raising chickens does require lots of work, it's a slower-paced lifestyle and doesn't need to be scaled up. It allows you to fall into a routine and you know exactly the resources & time you need each day. But the ambitious go-getter lifestyle never settles into routine in this way, it's fast-paced and always demanding of not just physical labor, but of one's mental labor.
Ambition requires that you stay 2 steps ahead of the game, anticipating market trends and shifting goals that lead to personal evolution and constant growth. Raising chickens on a homestead doesn't have those same pressures - sure, the pressures are there but often they're manageable. Honestly, nobody goes into raising chickens bc of "competitive drive" or "ambition", they go into it to decouple themselves from the overly-ambitious, dog-eat-dog, corporate consumerist world in order to have a content lifestyle on their own terms.
Raising chickens has manageable expectations that a career path does not, and I think that's where everyone is mischaracterizing what she meant. If you're commercially raising chickens, that's a different story - but using context clues, it's obvious that's not what she was getting at. Bad example aside, everyone here is derailing the conversation and the point she was making, so let's focus.

I wanted to say I have always been a morning person - I remember waking up at 4am to study for exams but I could never study UNTIL 4am, I need sleep to function.
Now this translates great to my work life - because starting early means I get to stop at 17 which is better for me. I don’t think it‘s in any way better that someone else‘s routine, but it‘s nice to work at a flexible place accommodating early risers or starting work at 11 and that‘s no issue.

I identify as a Traditional Catholic, have 7 kids. Good at judging myself deficient. Interesting how you said you talk to your sister often, though she has taken a very different track. You can appreciate the differences, not ridicule them. Yes, having kids has been a hard path... My second born, now age 22, has severe autism so it has added to my struggles w isolation. I say that because you mention feeling a bit lonely and that you're not close with your sister anymore. Do you wish to be? Do you feel like you need more of a team around you? About what Chelsea said on 'homy' lifestyle having become competitive in itself and people trying to have the perfect farm home: even boudhist monks become competitive at fasting eventhough the idea behind fasting is to actually kill that drive to being better than the others (in this case by eating luxurious foods). You can just see how people, by design in my opinion, have this drive to be competitive, even in living a simple life 😅

Being a mother is a very noble, but also very hard job. Scientifically, every modern human child needs about 5 hours of parential attention (playing together, reading the books together, going for a walk together) per day. Tet-a-tet. If 4 children run around mother, - each one with his own needs, worries & wishes, - none of them will get enough attention, help & care. It's a simple math. Most of the kids with a big amount of siblings get just few minutes tet-a-tet with a parent per day. And they are often not especially happy.

You know... The whole night owl / morning person oppression thing is real. At my work it became a thing for meetings to move earlier and earlier. From 9 to 8 to even 7. I can wake up at 5 if i have to. I can do it for a week if there is a need. But eventually it really messed with my sleep. I went to bed early. I was in bed by 9.30. but eventually it got to where my sleep suffered. I would wake to at 3 and not fall asleep again. I had anxiety and was no longer fully rested. Then i would inevitably fall asleep 30 min before my alarm went off.
The funny thing is even tho it was now defacto mandatory for everyone to be there early, the 'early birds' still knocked off at 4 and if any late work had to be done, it still defaulted to the 'night owls'

This is just wild and sorely a reflection of middle-class Americans/Habitants of the west. You're either a homestead person or a high flying CEO. Creatives are now emulating the stodgy, out of touch corporate scene they regularly take the time to verbally distance themselves from. It's so pretentious and so out of touch. For a second I thought I'd accidentally clicked onto a video created by Gwyn Pals Goop, it's so Soho/Malibu.

My comment isn't about the comment that has been pinned but the over all privileged aura of this video. It's soooo uncomfy. Chelsea, who I respect, the CEO of a company say's 'I dont wake up at 5'... Lifestyle privilege is a thing and goes further than what car you drive to work every morning or whether you can afford a Peloton.

Being shut down and ridiculed for trying too hard has been the biggest self esteem derailer for me. It’s disgusting how many people will side eye and arm chair critique you out of sheer jealousy. Often times they even have the stones to say “you’re making us all look dumb/bad/lazy. Stop trying so hard.” This mentality is why I left public school early, and why I shut off and shut down a lot of people around me. It’s so gross being surrounded by people who want to see you fail because you are going after something you want or actively and enthusiastically putting in the effort and are proud of it. I’m not trying to say; all these haters out here dragging me down! But it comes to a point where people get envious because you’ve put so much effort in that it LOOKS effortless. But when you try to be frank and honest, showing how much work it really took and sacrifice, they attribute all the success to some “advantage” that you had. It’s really disheartening to see a large majority of people actively wish failure on people out of sheer envy.
