Instead of doing a dedicated battle mode, they shouldve just done a more polished and refined snapmap that supported game types like death match, battle mode, custom scenarios, and mod support. Tbh i wouldve took that over the dedicated Battle Mode and the DLC (which dont get me wrong, was great but they couldve used it as a basis for a 3rd doom game) Id regained a chunk of their identity with Doom 2016, but still need to fully embrace custom user content again. They dont need to release the source codes for their games (Even though that would be sweet) but man even if they just did an official Editor on PC, would make the playability of the game even more worthwhile. Hopefully if a new Quake is in the works they bring back the arena multiplayer and full official mod support.

I know this probably sounds crazy, but the reason I wasn't ever attracted to the Doom 2016 snapmap, is the idea that it was not a genuine editor.
It gave a sense the boundaries of creation where what the developers of had already considered for you.
The original Doom editors were not like that. They gave you the ability to draw the exact same lines that id software were capable of drawing. If you weren't capable of making those lines resemble anything recognisable, then it was on you, not them.
That is why the irony is, the game engine that actually carries the original spirit of the Doom engine today, is Unreal.
Even though Doom still exists as a game people play, and Unreal as a game only exists in memoriam 😢

Hats off to those that are still using it, i've thought about jumping back in. But will always have a bitter taste in my mouth about what this thing could have become with just a little more support from id.

Not sure why my comments keep going away..
but yeah, appreciate a video like this; it never really got the credit it deserved for its capabilities as a map editor.
It's even more powerful thanks to a mod tool that overcomes any restrictions imposed by the in-game UI, and is only limited now by the engine itself and the assets available in the game's files. It has enough freedom now that I was able to build a primitive spaceflight simulator with it. Everything still able to be run on consoles.
There's still a small but moderately active community of people making maps to this day. We even host speed mapping competitions every few months or so.

i made a crazy map on ps4 where u started in a shut down facility and had to turn on the power while fighting in the dark, orienting urself wth glowsticks, generator powered lamps, etc that was left by the staff who failed at holding the demons back. doing so would unlock a door to a blood and guts soaked multi story arena where u had to get through a relentless wave event, including a fake out ending where spawns stopped and the music faded, just for the demon voice to mock u for thinking it was over and a heavier track to set in. after that youd go to the next section that was turned into a over the top satanic temple made from the people who worked there.
i planned on just having the level end when u aproached a hell portal at the end of the temple but the game crashed at that point. trying to reload the map would result in my console just freezing, it wasnt having it.
on pc now, and really thinking abt picking up Doom on a sale. rtx3070, 2x2tb ssds and other stuff to match, i hope it would be able to handle such a map

Awesome video, thanks for this! I will say, IMHO, the two main community killers for this feature: BethID abandoned all updates and support around 2018, and the LOADING TIMES.
I love Snapmap (seriously, check my channel, plus I authored Devil City Ransom) but it really is a bear to have to sit through 3 different loading screens over a 3-4 minute period just to get to the main menu. Even the smallest maps take forever to load, and a lot of the stuff that can break maps or make them laggy aren't documented in any way (e.g. the 12-mob limit, BV-over-navmesh lag when it's not set correctly, blinking geometry, etc).
Still, it was a small but fervorous community back in the day and we had a lot of fun working within Snapmap's limitations and quirks to build some amazing stuff. I still remember how we often joked it was a "Fisher-Price Dev Kit". The current community figured out how to crack it open and mod it up the wazoo to do even cooler stuff. So it's still a thing and I dig that it's getting some love!

  • @HeathenMetalhead221
    @HeathenMetalhead221 Před 6 měsíci +1

Snap Map was super underrated. With a bit more polish and refinement (IE Maybe a custom module creator, Official custom mod support, etc) it would've been probably the best in game editor ever created surpassing Halo's Forge. The fact you could run this on the consoles just shows it had so much potential. I was bummed when Eternal didn't have anything of the sort. I would've rather had a multiplayer support with deathmatch, CTF, etc and a refined snap map over a dedicated Battle Mode and DLC that could've been a basis for a 3rd game. I would've even loved it if they carried it over from 2016 and added content from Eternal to it. Because they could've even have made it to where you could make Battle Mode maps in Snapmap and scenario types and just have it as a game type. Like imagine if someone did a challenge map with like 50 Marauders attacking you or like a dueling multiplayer map where you can attack each other with the Crucible like a sword fight. Don't get me wrong, the Campaign and DLC in Eternal were fantastic, but Doom without the proper multiplayer or custom content, doesn't feel as much like Doom tbh and while Battle Mode was an interesting idea, it alone doesn't carry the multiplayer aspect on its own. Granted Doom has always first and foremost been a single player game but it was also the game that invented Deathmatch and has had massive mod support that carried over to Quake and is still prevalent in both games to this day. Fingers crossed if the rumors are true about a Quake Reboot, they return to their glory days and have full mod support with an editor and a proper arena multiplayer.

I didn't gave up easily on trying and waiting for more people to make new maps, but it never thrilled what I played. I know that it's an utopia thinking 2016 and Eternal having full mod support; the games would be way more alive, but I can get why they didn't went that route.

Really they should have added a Snapmap like tool to Quake Champions because that's a real Multiplayer game... I think Doom 2016 multiplayer was doomed because of loadouts and lack of player knockback. Some Multiplayer maps also didn't have a layout. They just seemed to be random areas put together... Honestly SnapMap was just a waste of HDD space, as the editor was way too limited compared to what you can do in the original Doom games, and there consequently wasn't that many user creations out there to try out, and most weren't all that interesting because of aforementioned limitations.
