  • In my The Dirt series I discuss some of the more sensitive sides of farming that maybe others stay away from. I think they need to be discussed so here you go!
I was recently talking to a buddy of mine about how some farmers are so discouraging and negative about farming! Especially when a young guy asks them about getting into it. This is my thoughts on that and why they are that way. Plus I throw some encouragement out there and show you my truck gun!

THIS is a topic that should be talked about more often. There would be a lot more young beginning farmers if the older guys with experience wouldn’t talk so negative. I always tell guys that if there wasn’t any money in this industry, there wouldn’t be anyone farming.

Another thing is the guys that are operating 10,000+ acres grabbing everything available acre they don’t need.

Man you are spot on. Lots of broke farmers with big houses, nice trucks and great vacations planned. Not sure how they do all that with no money!! Lol
The second comment is my BIGGEST issue with agriculture today. These big operations that never stop wanting more and more land. They gobble up all the ground and they're like vultures watching for the next farm to be available. Pisses me off.

I think most middle aged farmers have a hammered in propensity to discourage anyone just from fear of competition for land like you said.
The land wars/squabbling here in central Alabama are vicious. There is always a herd of folks “trying to get what you’ve got.”

You're not alone in being surrounded by those folks. There's certain farm areas out here I don't even bother looking at because the farmers are such greedy bastards around them. Constantly be worried that after your 3 year lease the other farmer is gonna up the rent and nab the land. These are mostly guys already working a ton of land too.

Iv been a dairy service technician in Idaho for four years and have been interested in farming but definitely have not found anyone to talk to about it even though my customers and neighbors are all farmers. I just purchased a small tractor and im just guna start small and do it for fun and i guess we will see what happens.

Unfortunately that's how it goes for a lot of folks. Some farmers don't wanna share information. Not all I'll add though. I'm fortunate in that there is a handful of good farmers around here that will help you out with what they do for their crops.
Start small and try to just grow slow and steady! Good luck!

The avrage age of a full time Farmer global is like 65 years old that is a problem in it self. Those old timers need to start to think about the future of the industri and them self. It naturly that the health of a 70 year old farmer is going down hill, they often are in a situation where they dont need to do much to support them self. The best for all parties would be that they did start to scale down and focus on mentoring, the old guys has ben around the Block more than ones and can realy be a big help for any begining farmer. There are also alot of guys there dont have any body lined up to take over those got to start to reach out to the young guys. It dont Hurt to talk to kids there still are in highschool.

You are right for sure. Seems a lot of the older generation has a hard time handing the reigns down. I get it, they love farming but they need to pass the torch to see the industry they love, thrive.

I like to see new farm buildings in our country instead of old shanties of barns about to fall over.
These old wooden barns from a bye-gone era are an eyesore throughout our modern nation and many farmsteads need an extreme makeover across our land.

Man I enjoy seeing the old barns. I consider myself an old soul though. We need to tear these down to make room for bigger equipment but I hate to see them go.
