Snow Leopard: Beyond the Myth (2008)
A secret cave deep within the mountains of Pakistan is one of the last refuges of the snow leopard - the rarest and most beautiful of all the big cats. Journalist Nisar Malik has decided to use his news skills to help promote and protect this highly endangered species. Each year generations of snow leopards have returned to the mountains to raise their young. Harsh seasons force this predator and its prey to the lower reaches of the valleys where Nisar follows their hunting, feeding and mating behaviours. For Nisar, this is a journey of discovery in which he finds beauty and peace in a place that he previously portrayed as dangerous and evil. For the viewer, the film offers a journey into a misrepresented and unknown part of the world.

So interesting! Snow leopards are also extremely hard to catch on camera. Because it isn't easy to film at an altitude of 5,000m, but our camera crew work their way to capture footage of a snow leopard mom, and her two cubs giving unique insights into their family life. It's really adorable, but also thrilling.

Snow Leopard's are my absolute favorite wild animal. My #1. I love their eyes, the coats, the secretiveness they have about them. The way they can run up and down those mountains is amazing. I have seen them tackle goats and both go falling down the mountain hitting rocks and boulders and tree's and you just know they are both gonna be dead by the time they hit the bottom but nope, the leopard landed on top of the goat and he dragged it off to eat it. They are amazing cats.

Mine also. Years and years ago I was riding my dirt bike on a trail in Northern Michigan. Crested a hill and an animal was sitting on the trail about 100 feet away. I witnessed a snow leopard right before me, in Afghanistan. I can still recall being 14 years old at the time. It was a year of heavy snowfall, and due to the excessive snow in the mountains, they perhaps couldn't find enough food. As a result, they descended into the village and managed to get into a flock of sheep through a roof window. Regrettably, the villagers had to use a gun to shoot one of them. It was a heartbreaking incident, but it illustrates how people in that region rely on domestic animals for their survival.

You'd think they would make the collar with the same markings as the snow leopard itself instead of this big white thing that stands out.

*It's understandable to question the choice of a white collar that stands out against the markings of a snow leopard. However, the design of collars is often driven by practical considerations, such as ensuring visibility for tracking and research purposes. While it may seem contradictory to their natural camouflage, the collars serve as valuable tools for studying and monitoring these elusive creatures.*

Although it kinda' sucks that we had to put the collar on the snow leopard, I think about the justifications that outweigh the detriments.
First, it's not like a collar is being put on every snow leopard, and the information we get from tracking just 1 of these elusive animals is extremely valuable considering 1 collar to an entire population of the species.
Second, their relief comes from the fact that the leopard can still hunt and function despite the collar, which is a bit more assuring.
Third, I would imagine that with technological advancements, someday we would have devices that are far less disruptive to animal behaviors than this collar, and we are simply at a point where the information is valuable but we need to sacrifice comfort to get it.
Fourth, the information we get from the collar will be used to learn about the animal and save or help their population should they ever need it. We're not putting this collar on it for no reason.
Fifth, some animals aren't so elusive and we can observe them without the need of things like trackers. Because snow leopards are so elusive, the only way to efficiently track them and learn as much information is to put a collar on 1.
I have much respect for people who make the tough calls in order to advance education and help lead us to more balance with nature.
