milkcrate919 Bikeman is great, also check RJ The Bike Guy, if you haven't already. He's also very informative. Since beginning my own venture into bike mechanics about 8 months ago I've since completely stripped down, repainted and completely overhauled a circa 1979 Raleigh, and am in the process of a circa 1980 Univega and Motobecane. Nothing better than good old fashioned knowledge.

nice bike. That bike is not for beginners it's a more advanced bike I like where the break. You just have to keep up on your maintenance that's all something people should do any ways...

I work for a Trek dealership and they are very high quality bikes, a lot of care and planning goes into each one. Other than the brake placement on the madone nothing makes me second guess their design choices.

I agree that brake should be at the top not the bottom of the frame.!

I thought I knew everything about bikes- and recently purchased the Trek 5.9 with lower rear brakes. I asked the bike shop where the quick release lever was and they said they don't have them for this type of brake. So I believed them - I also had a hell of a time adjusting the calipers from side to side (there was no barrel adjuster) Or so I thought until I saw this video. This has made my little cycling life easier- nice video!!!

That's MY commuter bike BikeMan! Except my cable housings, bar tape and bottle cage are green and tires are Conti HardShells. Meow! 😻
BTW, in 4,000 miles, including occasional PHX AZ rainy days, I've had no problems with that rear brake or anything! Well, except my big fat ass does tend to beat up wheels.😿Also noteworthy is the integrated speedo/cadence wireless pickup inside the frame chainstay. 🚴🏻

Last month I bought one and I'm quite happy whit this product, but I've to admit, that rear brake will be absolutely disgusting in less than one hour of pedal, and you have to clean it pretty much every day or you may have trouble to stop. Wish me luck! Haha

I had a 6 series that i sold that had those same brakes, you only use one screw depending upon which brake levers you have. If i remember right the H was for shimano/sram levers and the L was for campy levers. Whichever screw you arent using you back it all the way out. I was really not satisfied with the bontrager rear brake that was on mine it lacked the power i was used too, ive heard the dura ace model of those aero brakes are alot more powerful

I remember in the 90's the chain stay location was popular for a while on mountain and BMX's that came equipped with U-brakes. I never understood why manufacturer's did that on those bikes due to accumulation of dirt and crap. I know how much buildup my mountain bike (and previous mountain bikes) get down there when I take it down a single path, and that only makes me wonder more so as to what manufacturers where thinking of back then. I have seen a few old step through bike's were it was done because there was no real good way to do a standard brake location - not common. But anyway one slices it, it is still a lousy location for a brake.

I have similar brakes on my 7 year old Scott Solace and they are not too clever, being directly exposed to any crap on the road. I just had to replace the cable since it was seized up with muck that had found it’s way inside the outer sheath. It does look cool though. Next road bike will have discs.

Nice looking bike, but the modern design choices, not just the brake, seem like backwards steps (internal routing). Also carbon is not a draw for me.

Trek did integrated brakes & internal cables to painstakingly increase the aerodynamics. The brakes are Madone specific and only available in Bontrager or Dura Ace. The front caliper and forks are designed together for minimum drag through the wind.

I found a Trek 3700 mountain bike from around 2005, the head tube near the front Trek badge says "made in china."
1.) Did the quality of Trek mtb's go down since the 1990's and were they always made in China?

Hopefully one of these days I can get a road bike. I've been using a MTB as a work commuter. The tires are dragging big time. It's a 29er, would like to put some hybrid ones, any suggestions in what size should I get BikemanforU . By the way it one of those cheap bikes from Walmart, (Genesis) but it has handle pretty good since then.

      Running 28 mm slicks
There are great non knobby 29 wide tires. Amarillo is one i rode for yrs.
You can make a Wally bike most awesome by using your lbs
      Wheels, lower brackect, crank, etc..

As long as you like your frame and dont want road bike rebuild
Either way, when starting keep initial costs down and build
Build everything from yourself, to bike, to lbs relationship, etc..
