    fun slo-mo fact, those bullets are traveling about 2800 fps. The twist rate on an m60 is 1 in 12 inches. So that means the bullet is spinning at 2800 revolutions per second, or 168,000 RPM

    Before the Dutch invented synchronisation gear for the Germans, the French just stuck metal on the propellors as armour. So the French pilots were shooting at their own propellors and hoping they didn't blow them off.
    And in WWII, an American pilot got a bullet right through the centre of his propellor blade, but managed to return to base. If it had been just a bit to the left, or a bit to the right, he would've gone down.

    • @fdsdh1
      @fdsdh1 Před 7 lety +4

      Cybermat47 the British decided to make a pusher aircraft which was actually fairly decent. They also made some sort of monstrosity with the gunner sitting in front of the propellor on a gondola (or 'pulpit') with the pilot sitting on the other side, that was less successful for obvious reasons,

      Is he? He's standing on the far side of the propeller while it's more or less straight up and down and the gun should be centered on the propeller. His left elbow is against the far side of the fuselage. If his head is in front of the gun, that would mean his right elbow must be straight in front of Dan relative to the engine which doesn't seem to be supported by the rest of his positioning. I won't deny that it looks like his head is lined up with the gun but I think that's a perception issue....

      A cursory search for "synchronization gear" and "turbulence" doesn't turn anything up, so it could be a coincidence.
      If the gear can be adjusted, experimentation could shed some light on this, seeing if firing earlier or later affects the accuracy.
      The one tricky thing, though, is that the mock engine is stationary. The propellers are without a doubt creating turbulence, but relative to the bullet trajectory, is that turbulence comparable to what might be encountered in real flight?

    • @Alex-mp4kl
      @Alex-mp4kl Před 7 lety +9

      Really the gun can go off at any time between the blades. it's about the speed of the machine gun not the propeller. It's basically a small cam that disables the gun while the prop is right in front. Other than that you can pull the trigger and fire away in the middle, the tail edge or leading edge, doesn't matter.

  • @RandomStuff-he7lu
    @RandomStuff-he7lu Před 7 lety +313

    One of the early French pilots I believe just fixed a gun firing through his propeller arc and just reinforced his props with metal. Bullets that hit were deflected. For a time it was successful. The problem was that the stupid bastard didn't replace the propeller after each mission and eventually it broke in mid flight and he was killed in the resulting crash. Literally shot himself down.

    • @28mayhem
      @28mayhem Před 7 lety +7

    • @InVacuo
      @InVacuo Před 7 lety +14

      Actually you'd be surprised how much you notice the difference while flying. Whist playing the awesome and incredibly realistic first world war flight sim, Rise of Flight, I have often had to make a decision when diving on an enemy whether to throttle back to give me more time to aim with the lower rate of fire or give it full throttle, hope that I can aim in time and unleash a devastating hail of lead while hoping I won't over-rev and kill my engine :)

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 Před 7 lety +3

      AFAIK, the 'trigger' momentarily switched off the autofire while the propeller was in front of the gun. So yes, it did reduce the rate of fire, but not by a lot.

    • @InVacuo
      @InVacuo Před 7 lety +29

      No I'm afraid that is a common mistake people make, that was the Interrupter Gear which would as you say pause the automatic fire while the a propeller blade was in front of the muzzle of the gun. This never worked properly so the Synchronisation Gear superseded it, this would essentially have the machine gun working in a semi-automatic state and every time a propeller blade would pass the muzzle it would send an impulse to the trigger, firing the gun. If the next firing impulse came before the gun was ready (finished chambering the next round) it would not fire. This meant that the fire rate would peak at certain engine RPM counts where the firing impulses and the max rate of fire of the gun reached an equilibrium and then drop as the RPM increased and the impulses came too rapidly for the gun to have cycled the next round, this fire rate would then increase again as the engine RPM increased and so on. This staggering of firing rates is less noticeable in aircraft that used two of the later version Vickers Machine Guns which had a modification that increased the rate of fire (although the name of that mod. escapes me...) but the difference of fire rate between low and high RPM is quite noticeable as the overall maximum rate of fire is much higher.
      Hope I didn't bore you with all that, I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to this topic :D

      @gevmage Před 6 lety +22

      But a plane's propeller rotates and different rpm depending on if you're trying to speed up or slow down or stay level.
      And the sync would slide in any case, because the engine wouldn't hold an absolutely steady rpm. So you have to have some positive mechanical link between the crankshaft of the engine and the firing mechanism of the gun that holds off firing in the critical time as the blade will pass in front of the muzzle.

  • @nectartyrant1390

    You could custom order a propeller that has no angling. It wouldn't be able to produce thrust, regardless of RPM.

    • @deancyrus1
      @deancyrus1 Před 6 lety +9

      I was just thinking the same thing then read your message. It would have made a better video if the prop was moving at full speed. You just need a blade the that cut's through the air but produces no thrust

    • @beefcakeandgravy
      @beefcakeandgravy Před 5 lety +3

      @@deancyrus1 It would not have made a better video. Both of you seem to forget that the results would be the same at full speed.
      200rpm vs 1200rpm the bullet is still trucking on through the prop like it was stationary.
      It's not like the prop is going to knock the bullet off course or deviate it in any significant way.
      Like Gav said, they're dealing with "orders of magnitude" so therefore you'd need 20,000rpm to even start to make a difference.
